Congress alleges BJP-Nikita link in Ajithkumar custodial murder, Nainar rejects it
SIVAGANGA: A slugfest broke out between TNCC and BJP on Friday over the alleged political affiliation of JP Nikita, on whose theft complaint security guard B Ajithkumar was picked up by police and allegedly assaulted, leading to his death. Speaking to reporters after visiting Ajithkumar's family, TNCC president Selvaperunthagai said Nikita had played a role in organising the recently held Murugan Maanadu in Madurai. He also mentioned that she is a follower of BJP leader K Annamalai. TN BJP president Nainar Nagenthran, who also visited Ajithkumar's family, responded to media queries about this. When a reporter asked him about a picture of Annamalai posing with a person presumed to be Nikita, Nainar said he was not aware of the development. Further, he said anyone can take photos with a politician in public life, and it does not imply they are associated with the party. Also, he denied Nikita's role in the Murugan Maanadu.

Will always uphold Anna's legacy: Edappadi K Palaniswami
CHENNAI: Joining issue with Chief Minister M K Stalin's charge that the AIADMK had mortgaged the name of Dravidian icon Arignar Anna, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday asked whether Stalin and the DMK have any locus standi to utter the name of Anna. He also said the AIADMK would not relinquish its connection with Anna, not even for a moment. Earlier in the day, speaking at a public function at Tirupathur, the CM criticised the screening of 'disgraceful' videos about great leaders at the Murugan Maanadu, and said that those from the AIADMK, which has Anna in their party name, at the conference remained a mute spectator and mortgaged the name of Anna. 'Today, they have mortgaged their party. Tomorrow, we should not allow them to mortgage Tamil Nadu,' Stalin added. Reacting to this, Palaniswami said since former CM M Karunanidhi 'had destroyed the principles of Anna', the late leader M G Ramachandran launched the AIADMK to safeguard the noble principles of Anna. 'We will not relinquish the legacy of the great scholar and statesman Anna,' he added. Palaniswami said starting from Katchatheevu to Cauvery, it was the DMK which mortgaged the rights of TN. 'The self-respecting people of TN will most certainly oust the double-faced DMK in 2026!' he added. Palaniswami also promised the people of TN that he would restore peace, prosperity, development, and the rights of the state, 'which have been lost due to the DMK', in 2026. 'This is my first electoral promise to the people of TN,' he added.

People of Tamil Nadu will defeat Sangh Parivar politics, says VCK chief Thirumavalavan
MADURAI: People of Tamil Nadu will defeat the politics of religion which is practised by Sangh Parivar in northern states, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan said. Speaking after taking part in a human chain protest organised by the Madurai Federation for Religious Harmony on Thursday to oppose the Murugan Maanadu, Thirumavalvan said through the protest, people of TN are conveying to the world that they are against religious politics. 'In northern states Sangh Parivar used religious politics to divide people. They are testing the same in Tamil Nadu. Since 1992, after the Babri Masjid issue, Sangh Parivar has been trying to rake up a controversy in Thiruparankundram and spread hatred against Muslims,' he said. 'BJP leaders like H Raja have made statements that they will convert Tamil Nadu into Ayodhya. But people of Tamil Nadu will never allow it, ' Thiruma said. He added 'Now they are making another attempt to woo Mukulathur community by organising the Murugan Maanadu. They will not succeed. We are not against the programme but are worried it will be used by Sangh outfits to unleash violence and destroy brotherhood among people.'

Murugan meet will protect Tamil culture; won't disturb peace, says Puducherry Home Minister
MADURAI: Puducherry Home Minister A Namassivayam said that the Murugan Maanadu will not disturb the public peace, and it aims at securing the Tamil culture. Speaking to the media at Madurai after inaugurating the spiritual exhibition replicating Lord Murugan's six abodes (Arupadai Veedu) that has been set up near the Vandiyur tollgate in Madurai, he said, 'Just like how the state government organised a Murugan Maanadu in Palani, this event will be organised in Madurai city. It will not cause disharmony and disturb peace. The event aims at seeking protection of the Tamil culture.' He added, 'BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran had publicly declared that time was not allotted to us to meet CM M K Stalin and invite him to the event. If given time, we will invite the CM as well. We have already invited AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, NTK chief coordinator Seeman, actor Rajinikanth, and PMK leader Anbumani Ramdoss to the event.' 'Devotees of Lord Murugan believe, wherever the abode of lord is located, it belongs to Murugan. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has deep faith in Hindu religious ideals. He wished for the success of this conference and urged everyone to participate,' he said.

Will seek more seats to contest, but at the right time: VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan
TIRUCHY: Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan on Friday said his party will demand more seats to contest in 2026 elections as part of the DMK-led alliance, but clarified that alliance harmony will be prioritised over individual gains. 'We have expectations and will ask for more seats in all elections. But alliance interest is more important than the party's interest. Decisions will be taken at the right time through talks. Though we believe in power sharing, upcoming election is not the apt time for it,' Thirumavalavan told reporters in Tiruchy. He was speaking ahead of the party's 'Save secularism' rally scheduled on Saturday. Thirumavalavan criticised the BJP for politicising religion, pointing to the Murugan Maanadu. 'Instead of addressing real issues like social justice and Dalit rights, the BJP is trying to divert attention by holding religious events like the Murugan Maanadu for political mileage,' he said. On BJP's claims of winning 2026 election, he said, 'It's a political illusion. Amit Shah couldn't get PMK or DMDK leaders to meet him – the alliance isn't whole.' He concluded that while corruption is serious, caste and religious extremism pose a bigger threat.
