Will always uphold Anna's legacy: Edappadi K Palaniswami
Earlier in the day, speaking at a public function at Tirupathur, the CM criticised the screening of 'disgraceful' videos about great leaders at the Murugan Maanadu, and said that those from the AIADMK, which has Anna in their party name, at the conference remained a mute spectator and mortgaged the name of Anna.
'Today, they have mortgaged their party. Tomorrow, we should not allow them to mortgage Tamil Nadu,' Stalin added.
Reacting to this, Palaniswami said since former CM M Karunanidhi 'had destroyed the principles of Anna', the late leader M G Ramachandran launched the AIADMK to safeguard the noble principles of Anna. 'We will not relinquish the legacy of the great scholar and statesman Anna,' he added.
Palaniswami said starting from Katchatheevu to Cauvery, it was the DMK which mortgaged the rights of TN. 'The self-respecting people of TN will most certainly oust the double-faced DMK in 2026!' he added.
Palaniswami also promised the people of TN that he would restore peace, prosperity, development, and the rights of the state, 'which have been lost due to the DMK', in 2026. 'This is my first electoral promise to the people of TN,' he added.

‘Moon Man', Gandhi kin among Opposition V-P picks, decision today
NEW DELHI: The Opposition INDIA bloc is set to name its Vice Presidential candidate on Tuesday afternoon, following a meeting on Monday where top leaders discussed options, with a final decision expected then, sources said. 'A meeting of leaders of all Opposition parties in Parliament will be held at 12:30 PM Tuesday, Aug 19, at 10, Rajaji Marg,' wrote Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on X. Sources said that the names that came up in the meeting included former ISRO scientist M Annadurai, who is known as the 'Moon Man of India' and is a Padma Shri awardee, as well as Tushar Gandhi, great-great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. The Opposition's candidate will be vying with the NDA's pick, Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan. The sources said that senior DMK leaders have proposed the name of Annadurai, who hails from Tamil Nadu, for the vice president's post. The name of senior DMK leader Tiruchi Siva is also doing the rounds, but discussions have yet to be held with other opposition leaders. Siva, however, refused to comment, saying his leadership will take a call on the issue. NDA nominee Radhakrishnan hails from Tamil Nadu, which will go to the polls in 2026.

ECI's press briefing raises more questions than providing answers to issues raised by INDIA bloc: CM Stalin
CHENNAI: Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin on Monday said the press conference addressed by the full bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI) led by CEC Gyanesh Kumar has raised more questions about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of poll rolls than what the INDIA bloc had already highlighted. The CM, in his post on X handle, asked how could there be so many deletions of eligible voters when house-to-house enumeration was taken. Pointing out that the enrolment of new voters is abnormally low now, Stalin asked: 'Were these young voters enumerated? Has any database been compiled to show how many youngsters who turned 18 on the qualifying date were included?' Stalin underscored that the procedure for enquiry and two appeals, along with their timelines as contemplated under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, might exclude a huge number of voters in the forthcoming election in Bihar.

DMK retains Sankarankovil municipality chief post
TENKASI: Ending weeks of uncertainty, DMK Ward 6 councillor P Kowsalya was elected as the new chairperson of Sankarankovil municipality here on Monday. She replaced G Uma Maheswari, of her party, who was removed last month through a no-confidence motion. AIADMK candidate M Annamalai Pushpam, who got only six votes, was defeated. Maheswari and another DMK councillor skipped the voting. On July 17, 28 out of 30 councillors voted against Maheshwari during a special meeting, citing her alleged failure to ensure basic civic amenities and allegations of biased functioning. The state government formally notified her removal on July 22 through a gazette issued under Section 51 of the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 1998. Following the notification, vice-chairman K Kannan of AIADMK was asked to handle administrative responsibilities until a fresh election was held. During the 2022 urban local body election conducted for the 30-member council, the DMK and AIADMK alliances secured 15 seats each. As the contest for a chairperson had ended in a tie, the result was decided by a draw of lots, which went in favour of Maheswari. However, growing discontent among councillors led to her removal and the election of a new chairperson. Municipal Commissioner R Sam Kingston supervised the election proceedings on Monday.
