Will seek more seats to contest, but at the right time: VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan

New Indian Express16 hours ago

TIRUCHY: Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan on Friday said his party will demand more seats to contest in 2026 elections as part of the DMK-led alliance, but clarified that alliance harmony will be prioritised over individual gains.
'We have expectations and will ask for more seats in all elections. But alliance interest is more important than the party's interest. Decisions will be taken at the right time through talks. Though we believe in power sharing, upcoming election is not the apt time for it,' Thirumavalavan told reporters in Tiruchy.
He was speaking ahead of the party's 'Save secularism' rally scheduled on Saturday.
Thirumavalavan criticised the BJP for politicising religion, pointing to the Murugan Maanadu. 'Instead of addressing real issues like social justice and Dalit rights, the BJP is trying to divert attention by holding religious events like the Murugan Maanadu for political mileage,' he said.
On BJP's claims of winning 2026 election, he said, 'It's a political illusion. Amit Shah couldn't get PMK or DMDK leaders to meet him – the alliance isn't whole.' He concluded that while corruption is serious, caste and religious extremism pose a bigger threat.

Congress slams govt for abstaining on UN Gaza ceasefire vote

New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday criticised the government for abstaining from the latest UN General Assembly resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, alleging that India's stance marked a departure from its long-held positions on peace and justice. The party questioned whether India had "abandoned its principled stand against war, genocide, and for justice." Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra went a step further, claiming that India's current position amounted to "cheering" the Netanyahu-led Israeli strikes on Iran. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said: "While 149 countries voted in favour of a UNGA resolution calling for a Gaza ceasefire, India was among just 19 nations that abstained. We stand virtually isolated. Have we abandoned India's consistent stand advocating for ceasefire, peace, and dialogue in the Middle East?" by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What Happens When You Massage Baking Soda Into Your Scalp Read More Undo Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said: "It is shameful and disappointing that our government chose to abstain from a UN motion seeking the protection of civilians and the upholding of legal and humanitarian obligations in Gaza. This is a tragic reversal of our anti-colonial legacy. Not only are we silent as Mr. Netanyahu annihilates an entire nation, we are cheering on as his government attacks Iran and assassinates its leadership, violating sovereignty and international norms."

Indus water will reach Ganganagar in three years, Pakistan will yearn for every drop: Amit Shah

BHOPAL: More than a month and a half after India put in abeyance the Indus Water Treaty in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the Indus water will flow till Ganganagar in three years, and Pakistan will yearn for every drop of water. Addressing the inaugural session of the three-day training camp for the BJP lawmakers of Madhya Pradesh in the state's only hill station Pachmarhi on Saturday, Shah said, 'Today, we can see the acceptance of BJP from Panchayat to Parliament. BJP government is necessary for a well-organised, educated, developed country.' 'Madhya Pradesh BJP has a glorious tradition. Late Kushabhau Thakre dedicated every moment of his life to the party and it has received the blessings of great leaders like Late Vijayaraje Scindia and Late Sundarlal Patwa. We are all party workers and the party has promoted us on the basis of our ability and capacity, and made us MPs and MLAs.' 'The BJP was formed out of the Jana Sangh and is currently the largest political party. We've governments in 18 states of the country. We have the most MPs, MLAs, district panchayats, municipalities, Janpad Panchayats and gram panchayats. Today, from Panchayat to Parliament, only BJP is visible. This development and expansion of the party is the result of the hard work and virtue of eight generations of workers.'

India distances itself from SCO statement on Israel-Iran tensions

New Delhi: India on Saturday distanced itself from a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) statement that strongly condemned Israeli airstrikes on Iran , stating that it had not participated in the consultations that led to the declaration. The statement, issued by the China- and Russia-led bloc, termed the Israeli strikes on Iranian territory on June 13 a "gross violation of international law and the UN Charter." It also said the attacks on civilian targets, including energy and transport infrastructure, resulted in casualties and undermined regional stability. India, however, reiterated that it had already articulated its position on the matter on June 13. "We urge that channels of dialogue and diplomacy be utilised to work towards de-escalation. It is essential that the international community undertake endeavours in that direction," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with both his Iranian and Israeli counterparts on Friday. He conveyed international concern over the developments and called for restraint and an early return to diplomacy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and emphasised the need for early restoration of peace and stability in the region. India remains the only SCO member state to have engaged diplomatically with both Iran and Israel in the aftermath of the strikes. It also abstained from voting on a UN General Assembly resolution this week that called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. India has communicated its position to other SCO members and clarified that it did not take part in deliberations on the joint statement, according to the MEA. The SCO, founded in 2001 with China and Russia as its principal architects, counts India as a full member since 2017. Iran formally joined the organisation in 2023. The SCO statement also called for resolving issues around Iran's nuclear programme through peaceful and diplomatic means, and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the UN Charter and the SCO Charter.
