BISP Kafaalat initiative: ‘Financial aid provided directly to female members of qualifying households'

ISLAMABAD: Financial assistance is provided directly to female members of qualifying households under Kafaalat initiative as part of BISP's approach to promote women's central role within their families, Secretary Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Amer Ali Ahmad said. He has also reaffirmed the government's 'unwavering commitment' to supporting the most deserving segments of the society through BISP. The secretary BISP shared these views in a meeting with a delegation of officers from the 43rd Mid-Career Management Course (MCMC) of the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA). The 14-member delegation was received at the BISP headquarters by the secretary BISP along with BISP Chairperson Rubina Khalid on Wednesday. Dr Syeda Faiza Urooj, Additional Directing Staff at NIPA, headed the delegation. The primary objective of the visit was to gain firsthand insight into BISP's operational framework, institutional structure, and its pivotal role in implementing social protection programmes nationwide, aimed at uplifting Pakistan's most vulnerable populations, said an official statement issued after the meeting. The secretary outlined key initiatives of the organisation including its flagship programmes: Kafaalat, Taleemi Wazaif, Nashonuma, Hunarmand, National Socio-Economic Registry (NSER), and a new digital payment model. The BISP chairperson said BISP's biometric verification system ensures transparency and accountability, and it enhances the mobility and empowerment of its beneficiaries. BISP is a transformational programme and a game-changer in the realm of social protection, she said. The organisation adheres strictly to the principles of transparency, accountability, and dignity, Khalid said. Dr Tahir Noor, Additional Secretary BISP, gave a detailed briefing to the delegation on BISP's institutional framework, its expansive countrywide presence, and its core objectives, said the statement. Shaheen Force cops misuse power, violate law

Two Shaheen Force personnel - identified as Constables Asad and Saqib - have allegedly tortured a motorcycle-riding student, Adyan Siraj son of Sirajuddin, on University Road on the pretext of snap-checking. The cops reportedly roughed him up for no reason and coerced him into making a video confession wielding a gun that he was a dacoit. The Shaheen Force personnel also levelled blatant allegations against the student and threatened to kill him in a police encounter, according to the victim. They snatched the student's wallet containing Rs5,000 and his national identity card. They also demanded Rs200,000 from the victim and threatened to kill him if he did not pay. Reportedly, the student told the cops that his father is also a retired employee of the Police Department, but they did not listen and took the student on a motorcycle to a nursery adjacent to Aziz Bhatti Park, passing under the NIPA bridge. The cop also allegedly took photos of both sides of student's national identity card and kept checking his mobile phone. Later, they took the victim to a deserted place behind the Civic Centre and threatened to kill him in staged encounter. The student asked the cops to talk to his father. After talking to the student's father, the cops allowed him to leave. They warned that if he complains to anyone, they have his name and address and they will not spare him. Acting SP Gulshan Iqbal Ahmed Iqbal Memon took notice of the incident and suspended both Shaheen Force officials and ordered the SDP Gulshan Iqbal to conduct an inquiry against them. SP Ahmed Iqbal Memon said that if the Shaheen Force officials are found guilty, departmental action will be taken against them.

Karachi's University Road closed after water pipeline damaged during BRT work

Listen to article Karachi's University Road has been closed to traffic following damage to a water pipeline during the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, authorities said on Monday. Traffic police said Water Board officials and machinery had arrived near Old Sabzi Mandi to repair the damaged line. The closure has disrupted traffic between Hassan Square and New Town, forcing commuters to take alternative routes. Vehicles coming from NIPA are being diverted via the Expo turning, while those from Essa Nagri are being redirected towards the stadium through the Hassan Square bridge. Authorities have advised motorists to use alternative routes to avoid congestion. The BRT project has previously come under scrutiny for infrastructure-related disruptions. Earlier, the Sindh High Court (SHC) summoned Karachi's mayor and the secretary of transport over concerns regarding tree-cutting along the BRT route. The secretary of forests told the court that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is responsible for trees within the city, while the forest department's jurisdiction begins outside urban limits. The court sought a report from the KMC on the matter.
