Melaka lecturer pleads not guilty to amphetamine, syabu consumption
MELAKA: A public university lecturer in Melaka pleaded not guilty at the Ayer Keroh magistrate's court today to a charge of consuming amphetamine and syabu last month. Mohd Shahrizan Othman, 44, entered the plea after the charge was read to him by a court interpreter before Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman. According to the charge, he was found to have self-administered amphetamine and methamphetamine, listed in Part III of the First Schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division Office of the Melaka Tengah district police headquarters. The offence was committed on June 19, at 5.20pm. He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the DDA 1952, which carries a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment or a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or both, along with a supervision order of between two and three years under Section 38B of the same act. Deputy public prosecutor Syaza Nur Sharif prosecuted the case, while the accused was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Muhammad Izzuddin Ab Malek. During the appeal, the lawyer said the accused was a lecturer with an income of about RM7,000 and was currently suspended due to the court case. The court granted bail at RM2,000 and set Sept 29 for mention, pending a pathology report.

Thai national charged with trafficking 2,987g of cannabis
KANGAR: A Thai man was charged at the magistrate's court here today with trafficking 2,987g of cannabis at the Bukit Ketri Railway Station near Padang Besar on June 11. However, no plea was recorded from the accused, Mahmud Chaidilok, 21, who nodded in understanding after the charge was read out by the court interpreter before magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim. According to the charge, the man is accused of trafficking the drugs at the railway station at around 9.40pm on June 11. Mahmud is charged under Section 39B(1)(A) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, along with not less than 12 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death. The court did not allow the Thai national to be released on bail as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Meanwhile, in the same court, the accused pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of self-administering a dangerous drug, methamphetamine, at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division Office of the Padang Besar District police headquarters at 4am on June 12. He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and is liable to punishment under Section 15(1) of the same Act, which provides for a maximum of two years' imprisonment or a fine of up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction. The court ruled that the accused be remanded without bail and set Sept 30 for the next case mention. The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Natasha Azmi while the accused was unrepresented. – Bernama

The charge, framed under Section 325 of the Penal Code, provides imprisonment for up to seven years and a fine if convicted. Magistrate S. Mageswary did not allow the accused, who was unrepresented, bail and set June 10 for mention, Bernama reported. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Farhana Mohamad Poad appeared for the prosecution in the case. Meanwhile, in another court, Obianke pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim to a charge of entering Malaysia without valid travel documents. He was charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. The Nigerian student faces a maximum fine of RM10,000 or imprisonment of not more than five years or both, if convicted of the offence. He also pleaded not guilty to self-administration of a drug by injecting Benzo (Nimetazepam) into his body at the toilet of the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division Office of the Sentul police headquarters at 3am on April 26. The charge, under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, provides a maximum fine of RM5,000 or imprisonment of not more than two years, upon conviction. No bail was allowed for Obianke, and the court set July 23 for mention. For this case, deputy public prosecutor Nurainizatul Farhana Zainal appeared for the prosecution.
