Nushrratt Bharuccha Recalls Being Replaced By ‘Flavour Of The Season': ‘Wasn't A Star Kid'

Last Updated: Nushrratt Bharuccha recalled that she was replaced in a film despite being officially signed for the project for 3 years. Bollywood actress Nushrratt Bharuccha has come a long way in her acting career, but her journey has not been easy. She has seen her fair share of ups and downs. In a recent interview, she recalled a painful experience of being replaced in a film, despite being officially signed for it for 3 years! When asked whether she was replaced by a star kid, she said that her situation was different, and that she was instead replaced by someone who had become the 'flavour of the season', and had recently become popular. The actress revealed that she was shocked and felt cheated, especially because she had remained committed for 3 years, at a time when the film had no director or lead hero! While speaking with Nayandeep Rakshit, Nushrratt Bharuccha was asked if she was ever replaced by a star kid. She replied, 'Mera thoda alag tha. I was locked. I was the only person signed on that film for 3 years. Film never took off for 3 years. Then finally, everything fell into place. I have a signed contract of that film lying in my house, till date. I will not say the film's name, because I have no interest in discrediting anyone or picking u p a fight. No need. Signed hai. No hero, no director and no producer. I was the only one who was signed. And suddenly the film went on fast track, and we're doing it. They got a good hero, a good director, everything got set up. And they called me and said, 'We don't want to do it with you now.' I said 'what do you mean? I was signed for 3 years!' And I have supported and stood by this film. Even when it had nobody else." The 'Chhorii 2' actress clarified that she wasn't replaced by a star kid, but by someone who had become popular back then. 'I stood by and supported the subject and the film for three years. I said, for what? But it wasn't a star kid who got cast. It was the flavour of the season that got cast. Somebody who had just become popular. And it was a smarter decision for them to take the more popular name over me at that time. I felt bad but I felt okay, because it was somebody else getting a chance," she said. When asked if she felt cheated, she replied, 'Of course. I had voiced it and called people and said that if I wasn't locked for it, you had the choice to say 'Nushrratt nahi, koi aur.' Theek hai. No problem. But I was locked. I was signed for 3 years. I still have the contract." She shared that she was initially signed by the presenters and the studio, while the rest of the team — including the director — was brought on board much later. When asked whether the film performed well, she replied, 'Not so much." First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Nushrratt Bharuccha Calls Out Sexism In Bollywood: "I Went Around Asking Can I Use The Hero's Vanity Van?"

New Delhi: Nushrratt Bharuccha recently called out the sexist mindset of Bollywood and how it functions. Referring to her own experience, she spoke about the time when she had to use the hero's vanity van. She also highlighted - from better roles to even washrooms, the male stars get a lot more privilege on set. What's Happening Nushrratt Bharuccha recently opened up to film journalist Nayandeep Rakshit on the bad experience she had on set when she was asked to use her male co-star's vanity van. Speaking of the unfair treatment of women in Bollywood, she recalled an experience, "There have been times when I went around asking, 'Can I use the hero's vanity van for 5 minutes? He's not here anyway. Can I use the washrooms?' Because they are nicer than mine. However, I won't complain or bicker at that time. I tell myself that I will bring myself to that point where I get these things by default." Speaking of deeply ingrained sexism in the film industry, she stated, "As soon as a guy delivers a hit, no matter if he is an insider or an outsider, he will get five new options immediately. But women have to keep struggling. I have been saying this since the time of Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011). For a girl to break out and get those options... I am not saying that she has to become an overnight sensation or anything... What does an actor want once their movie is a hit? To get a few options for potential future projects from which they can choose. That's it. They just need opportunities. We don't get as many (options) as heroes do." Nushrratt also spoke about an instance where once she was playing a small role in a film, hence she was put on economy class on a flight along with the technicians. She elaborated that even though she was invited to the business class, she refused the offer. Manifesting that one day she will play a big role and the production house will put her on business class. Something that eventually happened. Work Nushrratt Bharuccha was last seen in Vishal Furia's Chhorii 2 on Prime Video. Soha Ali Khan and Gashmeer Mahajani played key roles.

Male stars get better vanity vans, washrooms, says Nushrratt Bharuccha; recalls being dropped by her agency after biggest hit: ‘Had no work for 2 years'

Even among the privileged and the elite, women often have it worse compared to men, and often face sexism and discrimination. And the same holds true in the case of celebrities. Not just that female celebrities have to tackle objectification and exploitation on screen, but they are also forced to deal with casual sexism and discrimination off screen, leaving them to fight for virtually everything. Actor Nushrratt Bharuccha recently opened up about how such toxic practices of sexism happen in the workplace, with male actors receiving even better washrooms compared to women. 'As soon as a guy delivers a hit, no matter if he is an insider or an outsider, he will get five new options immediately. But women have to keep struggling. I have been saying this since the time of Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011). For a girl to break out and get those options… I am not saying that she has to become an overnight sensation or anything… What does an actor want once their movie is a hit? To get a few options for potential future projects from which they can choose. That's it. They just need opportunities. We don't get as many (options) as heroes do,' she observed during a chat Nayandeep Rakshit on his with YouTube channel. She also maintained that male stars often get bigger vanity vans. 'There have been times when I went around asking, 'Can I use the hero's vanity van for 5 minutes? He's not here anyway. Can I use the washrooms?' Because they are nicer than mine. However, I won't complain or bicker at that time. I tell myself that I will bring myself to that point where I get these things by default,' she noted. 'In my earlier days, I used to fly economy class. These days, I generally don't, unless there are no other tickets available and I absolutely have to travel that day. But when it's a matter of choice, I've always flown business class. Once, I was playing a small role in a film. All the other actors were seated in business class, while I was in economy class along with the assistants of technicians. It was an international flight, and the journey was quite long. I had made friends with some of the people (in business class). They said, 'Nush, come and sit with us.' That was an option as well. But I said, 'I won't come because this is the place that was given to me. But I will come to a place where I will fly business class and they will book my tickets with the production house's money, not mine.' I have managed to make that happen,' she added. She also recalled facing a rough patch in life where she had no work for two years, and this happened after she delivered the biggest hit of her career. While she did not name the film, she mentioned that she did not work for two years after she was dropped by her management agency after delivering her biggest hit so far. 'Once, one of my films became a blockbuster. I was with a certain management agency at that time. After the film became huge, my manager called me for a coffee. I went and started chitchatting. Meanwhile, the manager said, 'Sorry, we have to let you go. We can't manage for you anymore. We are not able to get things done for you.' But my film had just become a hit; what more should a person do? Though I tried to control my emotions, I started crying as they were giving out reasons,' she said. Nushrratt continued, 'After they left, I sat there alone, crying while drinking my coffee, after having just given the biggest hit in my career. It was a terrible feeling. I had no idea what to do after that. I had no work for 1-2 years at that time, nor did I have a team. Since I had just delivered a hit, it didn't occur to people that I hadn't signed on anything. They thought I was just being cautious with my choices. But the fact was, I was crying, without a team and a support system.' Nushrratt was last seen in Amazon Prime Video's Chhorii 2. She has appeared in hit films like Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Dream Girl, Pyaar Ka Punchnama among others.
