Guar Chempedak crash: Parents hope for fair probe into teen's death

ALOR STAR: The parents of a Form Four student who died after being hit by a police officer's car have expressed hope that the investigation will be conducted fairly and transparently. Their son, Muhammad Nur Iman Danial Mohd Roshidi, 16, a student at SMK Guar Chempedak, succumbed to his injuries at 9pm last Thursday at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital's intensive care unit (ICU), three days after the accident. He had been riding a motorcycle when he was struck by a Perodua Axia driven by a policeman attached to the Yan district police headquarters. The incident occurred last Monday. His mother, Norliza Salleh, 44, said she and her ex-husband, Mohd Roshidi Alias, 44, are leaving the matter to the authorities, and hope the investigation will be conducted with integrity. Although a week has passed, Norliza, a nurse, said the pain of losing her second child remains indescribable. "On the night of the accident, he told me he was tired and asked for some money before I left for my night shift at Yan Hospital. "It was around 8.20pm. He held my hand and asked for money before we exchanged goodbyes. I told him to take care if he planned to go out, and he replied, 'Baik, Ibu.' Shortly after, at around 8.52pm, Norliza received a call from her mother, who was in tears as she informed her that Danial had been involved in an accident. "I had just arrived at work. Then an unknown number also called to inform me about the accident. Initially, I wanted to go straight to the scene, but I turned back when I was told he was being taken to Yan Hospital," she said. "I waited at the emergency unit and saw him being brought in. He was convulsing, probably due to head trauma. Blood was coming from his nose and mouth. It broke my heart. "I'm used to saving others in my job, but that night, seeing my child in that state just 30 minutes after I last saw him, was devastating. Norliza said her son was later transferred to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Star and admitted to the ICU, where he was pronounced dead three days later. She recalled that in the days leading up to the accident, her son had appeared withdrawn, which she assumed was due to his active involvement in school activities. "He was a kind boy who always offered help. When he heard that a friend's family member had died, he asked for some money to give as a donation. "He was diligent about his prayers and loved going to the mosque. I'm heartbroken. He even dreamed of flying on an aeroplane; his aunt had already booked him a ticket to Indonesia for next month. But he never got the chance. On Saturday, Kedah Police Chief Commissioner Adzli Abu Shah assured the public that the investigation into the incident would be carried out thoroughly and without compromise. He said an internal probe would also be conducted by the police's Integrity and Standard Compliance Department.

KOTA KINABALU (July 26): The Anak Warisan Simpan SSPN (Kawan) Carnival 2025, organised by the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), is poised to foster a culture of saving and instil positive lifelong values within the community. Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud described the carnival as a progressive initiative that promotes financial literacy, strengthens family values, and preserves cultural heritage among Malaysia's youth. 'This PTPTN initiative aligns with the Ministry of Higher Education's aspiration to produce a knowledgeable, financially literate, and competitive generation,' he said when officiating the programme at Karamunsing shopping complex here on Saturday. Mustapha highlighted the importance of sound financial planning in supporting the country's higher education financing efforts. He said the Simpan SSPN scheme has proven to be an effective savings instrument, helping parents prepare for their children's education without relying entirely on loans. 'Since its inception in 2004, Simpan SSPN has recorded RM21.93 billion in accumulated deposits as of June 30 this year, with 6.98 million accounts opened. In Sabah alone, deposits exceeded RM689.84 million across more than 500,000 accounts, reflecting strong public trust in the scheme,' he said. Mustapha also shared the story of the late Mohd Roslan Abdul Rahim, a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) member and Simpan SSPN depositor who died in an accident in May. His family received RM193,000 in takaful and death benefit protection. 'This shows that Simpan SSPN is not only a savings tool but also a form of financial protection for families,' he added. He commended the Sabah state government for allocating RM77.01 million towards educational incentives through programmes such as State Education Savings Assistance (Bistari), Higher Education Institution Registration Cash Assistance (Budi), and Special Examination Cash Assistance (Budi) from 2022 to June 2025. These initiatives benefit infants, Year One students, higher education students, and major examination candidates. Meanwhile, PTPTN chairwoman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim reaffirmed the agency's mission to prevent students from dropping out due to financial constraints. 'As the main higher education fund in Malaysia, PTPTN continues to implement impactful programmes to raise awareness about the importance of education and financial planning,' she said. She added that Kawan 2025 takes a community and family-based approach, embedding values such as thrift and family integrity to nurture a resilient, harmonious Madani generation. Held simultaneously in all 14 states, the carnival featured poetry, syair, seloka and Simpan SSPN Action Song competitions, as well as cultural performances under the 'Heritage' theme, lucky draws, and engaging family activities. A Simpan SSPN counter also offered exclusive souvenirs to new depositors. Norliza noted that Simpan SSPN offers multiple benefits, including income tax relief of up to RM8,000 per year, takaful coverage, matching grants of up to RM10,000 per eligible family, and syariah-compliant, competitive dividends. She also expressed appreciation for the Sabah government's support of PTPTN's financial literacy and CSR efforts, along with the contributions of public and private sector partners. 'We hope Kawan 2025 serves as an effective platform for strengthening the savings culture, instilling heritage values, and supporting the growth of Malaysia's higher education sector, in line with PTPTN's motto—'Your Opportunity for Success',' she said. During the event, the District Education Offices (PPDs) of Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Papar and Tuaran received certificates of appreciation for promoting the Education Savings Club Module in schools, in support of the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013–2025. Prizes were also awarded to winners of the Simpan SSPN colouring, cultural and Action Song competitions held earlier in the day.

Secret 'gay party' in rural Kelantan sparks outrage among villagers

KOTA BARU: The quiet village of Kampung Kemumin, near Pengkalan Chepa, has been rocked by the shocking revelation of a secret gathering of more than 100 gay men. The event was held last month and exposed recently by Kelantan police. It has sparked outrage and disbelief in a community known for its strong Islamic values. One resident, who wished to be known only as Norliza, said the news was a bombshell. "I was completely shocked when I heard about the raid. Our village has never seen anything like this, not in Kelantan," said the 38-year-old eatery owner. Norliza said she learnt of the incident when the village head stopped by her shop on Thursday to share details from a police press conference. "To hear that it was a gay gathering and that police found condoms and HIV medication at the scene was deeply shocking. "We've always assumed such things only happen in big cities. Never here, in our backyard." She said the incident had severely tarnished the state's image. A labourer who only wanted to be known as Ahmad, 53, described the news as disturbing but necessary to confront. "It's a bitter pill to swallow, but this is the reality. Kelantan may be very Islamic, but that doesn't make it immune to immoral activities. "People need to wake up. These things are happening." He said the raid had opened villagers' eyes to the possibility of other unhealthy activities taking place in secret. "We were all taken aback when we heard that police raided a bungalow rented by the group. "Who knows what else could be going on under our noses?" A check at the homestay used for the gathering showed that it was operating as usual, with several guests seen on the premises. The property is at the edge of the village, near a riverbank. Kota Baru police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said investigations were ongoing. "We have detained three people and they have been charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code for possessing obscene materials. "Others were released after having their statements recorded. If necessary, we will call them back for further investigation."

PTPTN allocates RM47.8mil in advance loans for July 2025 intake

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) has allocated RM47.8mil in Loan Advance Payment (WPP) to 31,850 students pursuing diploma studies at public universities and polytechnics for the July 2025 intake. In a statement on Wednesday (July 2), PTPTN said each eligible student will receive RM1,500 to assist with initial preparation costs, ensuring their welfare is safeguarded as they begin their higher education. WPP is offered to Malaysian students who consented to receive the advance loan during their application to public higher education institutions (IPTA) via UPUOnline or the official admission portals, and whose parents or guardians are recipients of the government's Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) aid, subject to eligibility criteria. Since its introduction in 1999, WPP has benefited 990,638 students with total disbursements amounting to RM1.46bil as of May 31 this year. As an agency under the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE), PTPTN said it remains committed to supporting students in gaining access to tertiary education. Students can check their WPP offer through the myPTPTN app and redeem the funds at any Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd (BIMB) branch nationwide from today until Sept 1, by presenting their WPP offer letter and MyKad, although representatives are not allowed. PTPTN chairperson Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim led a delegation to personally visit WPP recipients in Bukit Gelugor, Penang, where a total of 1,419 students were offered assistance mounting to RM2.13mil. Norliza advised students to use the funds responsibly and encouraged them to apply for full PTPTN loans according to their institution's application timeline to ensure timely processing and approval. Applicants are also required to open a National Education Savings Scheme (Simpan SSPN) account via the app before submitting their PTPTN loan applications. - Bernama

Children of FRU crash victims receive SSPN benefits

IPOH: The three children of the late Sergeant Mohd Roslan Abd Rahim, a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel who was killed in a recent road crash, are eligible to receive RM193,000 in benefits through the National Education Savings Scheme (Simpan SSPN). National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim said the benefits were derived from the late 46-year-old FRU officer's savings under two products – Simpan SSPN Prime and Simpan SSPN Plus. The late Mohd Roslan had opened a Simpan SSPN Prime account for himself on May 7, making him eligible for a takaful protection benefit of RM1,000 and a death benefit of RM3,000. 'He also opened three Simpan SSPN Plus accounts under the Intan Package for his three children on March 31, 2019. With a monthly commitment of RM30 per account – RM20 for savings and RM10 for takaful – he qualified for Simpan SSPN Plus benefits, including an accidental death takaful coverage of RM60,000 per account, totalling RM180,000 across all three. 'Additionally, the beneficiaries are entitled to a death benefit of RM9,000 for the three accounts. This brings the total Simpan SSPN Plus benefits to RM189,000, and the overall benefits including Simpan SSPN Prime to RM193,000,' she said during the PTPTN Ziarah Kasih programme visit to Mohd Roslan's family home here today. Norliza said another FRU personnel killed in the same accident, Corporal Amiruddin Zabri, 38, who was also a Simpan SSPN Prime depositor, received a takaful protection benefit and death benefit totalling RM4,000. As part of the Ziarah Kasih programme, PTPTN also visited five homes of the FRU accident victims in Perak today. During the visits, Norliza said PTPTN had provided corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions in the form of cash amounting to RM15,000 to the children of the FRU crash victims, involving 15 individuals, with each receiving RM1,000 in the form of a Simpan SSPN Prime account. 'PTPTN hopes that through this CSR contribution and the takaful protection and death benefits from Simpan SSPN, the financial burden of the families left behind can be eased. 'Although no amount can replace their loss, the benefits received are hoped to safeguard the education of the children and support their future. As an agency under the Ministry of Higher Education, PTPTN remains committed to ensuring that the education of our future generation is well preserved,' she said. In the incident that occurred at 8.50 am on Tuesday (May 13), nine FRU personnel were killed and nine others injured when the truck they were in collided with a stone-laden lorry on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan, while returning to their base in Sungai Senam, Teluk Intan.
