Children of FRU crash victims receive SSPN benefits
National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim said the benefits were derived from the late 46-year-old FRU officer's savings under two products – Simpan SSPN Prime and Simpan SSPN Plus.
The late Mohd Roslan had opened a Simpan SSPN Prime account for himself on May 7, making him eligible for a takaful protection benefit of RM1,000 and a death benefit of RM3,000.
'He also opened three Simpan SSPN Plus accounts under the Intan Package for his three children on March 31, 2019. With a monthly commitment of RM30 per account – RM20 for savings and RM10 for takaful – he qualified for Simpan SSPN Plus benefits, including an accidental death takaful coverage of RM60,000 per account, totalling RM180,000 across all three.
'Additionally, the beneficiaries are entitled to a death benefit of RM9,000 for the three accounts. This brings the total Simpan SSPN Plus benefits to RM189,000, and the overall benefits including Simpan SSPN Prime to RM193,000,' she said during the PTPTN Ziarah Kasih programme visit to Mohd Roslan's family home here today.
Norliza said another FRU personnel killed in the same accident, Corporal Amiruddin Zabri, 38, who was also a Simpan SSPN Prime depositor, received a takaful protection benefit and death benefit totalling RM4,000.
As part of the Ziarah Kasih programme, PTPTN also visited five homes of the FRU accident victims in Perak today.
During the visits, Norliza said PTPTN had provided corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions in the form of cash amounting to RM15,000 to the children of the FRU crash victims, involving 15 individuals, with each receiving RM1,000 in the form of a Simpan SSPN Prime account.
'PTPTN hopes that through this CSR contribution and the takaful protection and death benefits from Simpan SSPN, the financial burden of the families left behind can be eased.
'Although no amount can replace their loss, the benefits received are hoped to safeguard the education of the children and support their future. As an agency under the Ministry of Higher Education, PTPTN remains committed to ensuring that the education of our future generation is well preserved,' she said.
In the incident that occurred at 8.50 am on Tuesday (May 13), nine FRU personnel were killed and nine others injured when the truck they were in collided with a stone-laden lorry on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan, while returning to their base in Sungai Senam, Teluk Intan.

Loke: Transport Ministry weighs creating safety board to probe major road accidents
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Ministry of Transport is mulling over the proposal to establish the Malaysian Transportation Safety Board (MTSB), a special body tasked with investigating road accidents in the country, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Minister Anthony Loke said the proposal follows recommendations made by a special task force set up by the ministry to investigate the fatal accident involving members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) in Teluk Intan, as well as a tour bus crash carrying students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Gerik, Perak, earlier this year. 'This is currently under consideration at the ministerial level, but establishing a new body or agency is not easy as it involves a long and complex process,' he said in reply to Khairil Nizam Khirudin (PN-Jerantut) who wanted to know about the government's commitment to implementing the task force's recommendations, particularly the establishment of MTSB. Meanwhile, Loke said the ministry would also introduce several initiatives to elevate the status of the driving profession, including training programmes aimed at producing more competent and professional drivers. 'We want to work together to train more professional drivers. The ministry has several planned actions to uplift the status of this profession…we want drivers to be respected and social status to be elevated,' he said. Additionally, Loke highlighted the ongoing issue of a shortage of bus and lorry drivers due to a lack of interest and low wages, and stressed the ministry's efforts to ensure drivers are fairly compensated in line with their working hours, workload, and the risks they face. 'However, we must not assume that just anyone, even those with criminal records or poor driving histories, can be hired as drivers. We are currently working on a database to identify individuals with past offences, especially those involving dangerous driving, so they can be filtered out,' he added. — Bernama

Govt moots purchase of 16 new buses for FRU after fatal crash

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The home ministry has proposed the procurement of 16 new buses with a capacity of 44 passengers each for the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) following the crash in May that claimed the lives of nine FRU personnel. Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the buses would be used by the FRU for general use and long-distance travel. In a written parliamentary reply, Saifuddin said the ministry proposed that funds be allocated to procure the buses under the 13th Malaysia Plan. He also said the ministry has proposed customising existing FRU vehicles to ensure they fit the set safety specifications, as well as the installation of additional safety components like dash cameras. 'The police are holding discussions with various stakeholders concerning improvements to SOPs (involving the transportation of FRU personnel). 'The date of implementation of the new SOPs will be set once the procedures are finalised and approved by the police force's leadership,' he said. A preliminary report by the task force investigating the crash also found that the tipper lorry was carrying 40,960kg of gravel, exceeding the permitted limit of 24,000kg by 70.67%.

Parents plead for fair, transparent probe after son killed in crash with police officer
ALOR SETAR, Aug 4 — The parents of a Form Four student who died after a road accident involving a police officer have reportedly expressed hope for a transparent and fair investigation. Norliza Salleh, 44, and her former husband Mohd Roshidi Alias, 44, lost their son Muhammad Nur Iman Danial Mohd Roshidi, 16, after he was critically injured in a collision involving his motorcycle and a Perodua Axia driven by a police officer from the Yan District Police Headquarters. The student from SM Guar Chempedak died on Thursday night while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah. Norliza, a nurse at Yan Hospital, said her son had asked her for money and bid her goodbye shortly before the crash, which occurred around 8.50pm that night. 'Usually, I'm the one saving others, but on that day, when I saw my son, it was heartbreaking because I had just seen him 30 minutes earlier,' she was quoted as saying. She described him as a kind and helpful boy who often went to the mosque and had been looking forward to a planned trip to Indonesia. Both parents said they hoped the investigation into their son's death would be conducted transparently and fairly. Last Friday, Kedah Police Chief Commissioner Adzli Abu Shah said the investigation would be carried out thoroughly and transparently.
