Sexual assault by friend left me feeling 'betrayed'
A woman who was sexually assaulted by a friend after a night out has described the devastating impact the attack had on her life. Bryony Piggin, 20, waived her right to anonymity and told the BBC she felt "betrayed" by her former best friend. She spoke out after Stefan Nikolic, 20, of Coast Road, Bacton, in Norfolk, was found guilty of assault by penetration. On Friday, Recorder Simon Levene sentenced him to two years in prison, suspended for 24 months, and told him he had "misread" the situation. Describing her friendship with Nikolic before the attack, Ms Piggin said: "We were inseparable." The pair had been on a night out with friends in Norwich when the assault happened in April 2023. The court heard that she had agreed Nikolic could stay at her home in the city, but when she woke up, he was assaulting her. "It was incomprehensible that my best friend would do something like that to me," she said. Ms Piggin, who is now unable to work due to her mental health, said the assault left her with a sense of "confusion, betrayal and sadness". She said she could not believe her former friend "abused" the trust she gave him. The attack on 29 April 2023, has left Ms Piggin with anxiety issues and led to her dropping out of her Open University course. "I avoid leaving the house... Trauma makes it impossible to carry on." Nikolic denied assault by penetration, arguing he had consent, but a jury at Norwich Crown Court found him guilty on 31 March. Giles Fleming, for the prosecution, said that even two years on, Ms Piggin was still suffering. Reading from her victim impact statement, he said the "consequences were devastating" and that she was suffering with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). "He didn't just violate my body, he took the person I was. "Even now, two years on, I can still feel his touch," she said in her statement. The court heard how Ms Piggin still scrubs herself "raw in the shower" following the sexual assault. Recorder Levene said the pair had a "warm, affectionate relationship" before the incident. "You entirely misread the situation," he told Nikolic, adding "I do take into account your lack of maturity." Nikolic was also handed a five-year restraining order. Nigel Malt: Dad who ran over daughter in drunken rage in west Norfolk dies in prison
A father who murdered his own daughter by drunkenly running her over in his car has died in prison. Nigel Malt was "consumed with anger" over a family break-up when he reversed into 19-year-old Lauren Malt in West Winch in Norfolk on 23 January 2022. After reversing into her he then drove over her body a second time, claiming in court that he thought she was a wheelie bin. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman said on its website that an investigation was taking place following Malt's death at the age of 47 on 29 April at HMP Gartree in Leicestershire. No cause of death has yet been confirmed. After being found guilty of murder, Malt was jailed for life with a minimum of 18 years at Norwich Crown Court, though the sentence was then extended to a minimum of 22 years after being referred to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme. The trial had heard that Malt had been arguing with his daughter and threatened her boyfriend with a crowbar. "Having knocked her to the ground he then reversed his car over her," prosecutor Andrew Jackson said. "He stopped, then he drove the car forward again over her body. These actions killed Lauren Malt, and later examination of her body revealed bruising, lacerations and crushing injuries to her head, torso, arms and legs." After hitting his daughter in his car, Malt put her body in the passenger side of his Mercedes and drove to the shop where the girl's mother, his estranged wife Karen Malt, worked. Ms Malt was then taken to a hospital in King's Lynn where she was pronounced dead. His lawyer said Malt had been drinking and that what happened had been an accident. The trial was told that Malt had been estranged from his wife and children and was living separately at a different address at the time.

Nigel Malt: Norfolk dad who murdered daughter dies in prison
A man who was jailed for murdering his own daughter has died behind bars, a prison spokesperson confirmed. Nigel Malt, 47, formerly of King's Lynn, in Norfolk, was sentenced to a minimum of 18 years in prison after he ran over Lauren Malt, 19, twice outside her home in West Winch on 23 January 2022. He was serving his sentence at a category B men's prison in Market Harborough, Leicestershire. His cause of death has not been confirmed. "As with all deaths in custody, the Prison and Probation Ombudsman will investigate," a prison service spokesperson said. During a trial at Norwich Crown Court in July 2022, the jury heard Malt had turned up at the family home. When his daughter asked him to leave, he reversed his car over her, stopped and then drove forward over her body. Malt then put her in his front passenger seat and drove to his wife's work before taking her to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.A post-mortem examination found she died from injuries to her chest and denied murder, claiming it was an accident, but was found guilty.
