'Marathon' mindset helped transform Notts
Head coach Peter Moores says it has taken some "blind faith" and a "marathon" mindset to get Nottinghamshire to the top of the County Championship just months after they narrowly avoided are 10 points clear at the summit at the midway point of the red-ball four wins from seven games is already double the victories they managed in the competition last term when they escaped the drop on the penultimate day of their final match the former England head coach, who guided Nottinghamshire to promotion from Division Two as title winners in 2022, admits his side has exceeded expectations so far."We said to the group before we started that at the halfway stage the target was to be in the top three so we could have a go at it in the second-half," Moores told BBC Sport."To be top with a 10-point cushion really is a win more than we thought we would get." Moores has won the County Championship title twice as coach, with Sussex in 2003 and Lancashire in 2011, and said that Notts' approach to turning their fortunes around in recent months will be how they now go on to challenge for the trophy this summer."It's a long-haul," he said. "It's like a marathon because it just keeps coming, which is a bit like football's Premier League where you just have to keep playing well. "And you have to have trust, you have to have blind faith in some ways that by doing the work every day, by pitching up when someone else might not, that will pay you back at the end of the season. And it does. "The most committed, the most skilful and the most at-it sides are the ones that win the championship."This year is a chance to try achieve something really special and win a championship."There are some really good teams in the division - Surrey being the one that everyone feels they have to beat - but we have proven to ourselves that we are a really good team and we can take on anyone if we play to the potential we have in the last few weeks." Improving players and team When finishing third from bottom in County Championship and failing to get beyond the the group stage of either the T20 Blast or One-Day Cup competitions last season, those traits were not immediately obvious at Trent Bridge last Notts' top scorers this season - captain Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater - are again leading the way with the Hutton, the County Championship's leading wicket-taker in 2023, has come back after an injury hit campaign to again lead the bowling attack with 24 scalps so Tongue, the England international that missed his entire first year with Nottinghamshire through injury, has claimed 15 wickets in three games. Teenage off-spinner Farhan Ahmed, who made his first-class debut last season, has also contributed 10 wickets to date."We thought we had a good team and the way we work at our place is something we call the skill factor," Moores said."We try get people better. We believe that getting better as individuals, it collectively makes the team better."The impact of international recruits has also been pivotal. All-rounder Fergus O'Neill was an instant hit during his short stint, taking 21 wickets, while Pakistan seam bowler Mohammad Abbas has replaced the Australian with equal effect, having taken 16 wickets in three pair are among the seven Notts bowlers to have already claimed five-wicket hauls this season - alongside Hutton, Tongue, Dillon Pennington, Liam Patterson-White and Lyndon James."A lot of different people have chipped in and we seem to find a way," Moores said."We have been in some tough situations, there is no doubt about that. But someone has either managed to pull us out of it or if there has been an opportunity to drive home a win, someone has found that extra bit to do it."With the bat, there have been seven century makers, with captain Hameed producing two, including a double is leading the way as the competition's top scorer, but Moores says he has crucially "got the balance right" as skipper after taking the job on last year."He has had a great start to the season but the the biggest credit I would give him is that as well as the batting is how he has captained," Moores said."He has managed to get the group together in a really good way. There is a real comradery with them, and that comes out with the way they play their cricket."

All-rounder James signs new three-year Notts deal
Nottinghamshire all-rounder Lyndon James has signed a new three-year contract that keeps him at Trent Bridge until the end of the 2027 season. The 26-year-old's deal extension comes just days after he scored a century in Notts' season-opening County Championship victory against Durham. It was his fifth first-class ton for Notts since coming through the club's academy to make his debut in 2018. The seam bowler has made more than 100 appearances for Nottinghamshire across all formats since then, taking 115 wickets and scoring 3,500 runs. "He's locally born and bred, which always adds that extra level of pride, and we're extremely proud of how he's developed in his career so far," Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores told the club website. "You only have to look at his innings just this week against Durham for the latest example of how much of a key member of our squad he's become."

McGoldrick is 'Superman' - Notts County boss Maynard
Notts County boss Stuart Maynard called veteran forward David McGoldrick "Superman" after the fit-again striker came off the bench to seal Tuesday's win at Grimsby Town and maintain the Magpies' push for automatic promotion from League 37-year-old made his first appearance for nearly six weeks after recovering from injury and scored a cracking goal from outside the box to wrap up Notts' 2-0 victory at Blundell Park after Alassana Jatta had poked them ahead on 56 minutes."He's Superman, isn't he?" Maynard told BBC Radio Nottingham. "He comes along, he delivers, he just produces things on a football pitch that other people can't."I was screaming from the side as he was running through, 'square it to AJ' [Jatta], but he touches it wider, he knows where he's going, he reverses it across goal, what a finish - incredible."The victory kept Maynard's side hot on the heels of Doncaster Rovers, who are in the third automatic promotion place, with the Magpies just a point behind going into the last 10 games. Although McGoldrick has missed the past seven games, his goal - a sixth in his last six appearances -took his tally to 14 for the latest goal triggered emotional celebrations on the Notts bench between the medical team and the players in a show of unity in what has been a testing season with Macari, Lucas Ness and Scott Robertson are all out for the rest of the campaign, winger Jodi Jones is still not fit while midfielders Connor Grant and Curtis Edwards - and now McGoldrick - have only just returned."When Didzy [McGoldrick] is in, even just on the bench, it gives all the young lads on the pitch a real lift, and that's what he's done," Maynard said."I think when you go through little blips in seasons, I think we all stick together as a staff. There's nothing that the medical team could have done about any of our injuries. So we've been very unfortunate this year."We work incredibly hard and the medical team are working around the clock 24/7 - they're in on Sundays - trying everything to get the lads back as quick as possible."They're playing a huge part in the success that we've had this season - the medical team have been incredible."

Maynard delighted to keep in-demand Jatta at Notts
Notts County boss Stuart Maynard has praised striker Alassana Jatta for not being distracted by the transfer interest around him during the winter window. Maynard confirmed that one bid for their leading scorer had been rejected in early January, while there was "a lot of interest" for the 26-year-old Gambian throughout. There had been reports that Championship side Plymouth had a £750,000 bid turned down for a player recruited from Danish side Viborg for just over £100,000 a year ago. "Jatta was fully focused, as you saw in his performances in the January window," Maynard told BBC Radio Nottingham. "It's very easy when there is speculation to take your eye off the ball a little, but he didn't - he trained like a true professional, like he does every day and gives everything. Could in-demand Notts striker Jatta be on the move? Notts County sign striker Traore from Fredrikstad Jatta started all of Notts' matches in January and scored twice in six games that month to take his goal tally to 16 across all competitions this season. He has been instrumental in Notts' surge up the standings and into the League Two automatic promotion spots, having scored six goals and created two others during a run of seven wins in nine matches since mid-December. "We are delighted to keep him," Maynard said. "It's really important for the football club, especially for the back-end of the season. "The way AJ has performed this season has been incredible, and not just with the goal return, but his worth ethic and everything he brings to the team."
