Deputy shoots, kills suspect in Vancouver late Wednesday night
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man died late Wednesday night after being shot by a Clark County deputy, authorities said. According to the Clark County Sheriff's Office, authorities got a call just after 10:40 p.m. from a person saying their son was going to kill them. The caller said the son had broken in through the front door of their home, was high on meth and had been drinking. Accused arsonist arrested after N. Portland fires, re-arrested after setting downtown fires While responding to the scene, the caller reported that the suspect had left the home on a bicycle, and within minutes, a Vancouver police officer spotted them, and authorities said he was armed with a gun. At 10:51 p.m., authorities said a deputy fired at the suspect near Main Street and East 19th Street in Downtown Vancouver. Despite providing first aid, the suspect was declared dead at the scene. Hector Castro says Washington state's new Office of Independent Investigation is looking at evidence and surveillance video to find out what led to the man's death. But Castro also says it's not the first time the agency is looking at Clark County. 'In Region 1, there are 12 counties that include Clark County,' Castro said. 'Since we began responding to incidents as of Dec. 1 of last year, three of the five incidents we're investigating have occurred in Clark County. Two of them have involved the Clark County Sheriff's Office.' OII said they will release the name of the deputy and the man killed at a later time before releasing their report to prosecutors in the next 120 days. Authorities said video was captured on body-worn and in-car cameras and will be released as well. Stay with KOIN 6 as we bring you more on the developing story. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
