Southampton vs Manchester City: Key players to watch in crucial Premier League clash
As the Premier League season nears its climax, Southampton vs. Manchester City in Round 36 promises high stakes and high drama. With just three matches remaining, Manchester City eyes a top-three finish, while Southampton fights for Premier League survival. Set at St. Mary's Stadium, this weekend's showdown is one to watch. Here's a look at the key players who could make the difference in this vital encounter. 1. Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) The Belgian maestro remains the heartbeat of City's midfield. His recent winning goal against Wolves not only showcased his clutch ability but also underlined his importance in tight matches. De Bruyne's vision, passing range, and set-piece threat make him a constant danger. Southampton will need to close him down early to avoid being picked apart. 2. Erling Haaland (Manchester City) With the Golden Boot race still alive, Haaland's physical presence and clinical finishing are a nightmare for any defense. Southampton's back three will have their hands full trying to contain the Norwegian forward, who can turn a game in seconds. 3. Kamaldeen Sulemana (Southampton) One of the few bright sparks in a struggling Saints side, Sulemana offers pace, trickery, and unpredictability in the final third. Against a side like City, who often push high, his ability to exploit space on the counter could be Southampton's best hope of a breakthrough. 4. Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) Silva's work rate and intelligence often go under the radar, but his ability to transition quickly from defense to attack makes him crucial in big games. Expect him to drift between the lines, dragging defenders out of position and creating room for others. 5. Paul Onuachu (Southampton) Standing at 6'7″, Onuachu brings a unique aerial threat. If Southampton can deliver quality into the box, he could be a handful for City's backline, especially during set pieces and long balls. His hold-up play may also relieve pressure and allow the Saints to gain territory. 6. Josko Gvardiol (Manchester City) The Croatian defender has grown into his role and could be key in dealing with Southampton's counterattacks. Gvardiol's speed, strength, and positional awareness could be tested by Sulemana and Onuachu, making him one to watch in the backline. Ramsdale saves two penalties as Rusk's Saints beaten by Aston Villa
A SECOND-half penalty save by Aaron Ramsdale - the first of two - preserved hope of a point before Saints were beaten 3-0 by Aston Villa. Ramsdale had denied Marco Asensio from the spot with just 20 minutes left, but a bit of brilliance by Ollie Watkins opened the scoring 180 seconds later. Donyell Malen doubled the advantage to make it two goals from Villa substitutes, while Watkins had also won the spot-kick that was not converted. Ramsdale spectacularly saved a second penalty in added time, denying Asensio again, but John McGinn turned in the rebound to spare his blushes. Saints have been beaten 26 times in their 32 Premier League matches this season, setting their new record for league defeats in a single campaign. It also meant defeat in the first match of interim boss Simon Rusk's second spell in the dugout, and for Adam Lallana in his first match as assistant. Only the second time in their history that Saints have failed to win 11 successive home matches in the league. Credit to Aaron Ramsdale but otherwise not a lot to shout about again, after a decent first half. Whatever Saints team is picked, they get worse after subs.#SaintsFC — Alfie House (@AlfieHouseEcho) April 12, 2025 Rusk only made two personnel changes from the side's 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday, but they came with a system overhaul. He replaced Joe Aribo and Tyler Dibling with Jack Stephens and Paul Onuachu, returning to a 5-2-3 formation with Mateus Fernandes playing deeper. Cameron Archer and Kamaldeen Sulemana flanked target man Onuachu, giving Saints bodies in defence and something tangible to play into. It worked well and should have resulted in a lead 15 minutes into the match, after a brilliant ball from Kyle Walker-Peters unleashed Archer. However, the former Villa man found Emi Martinez with a simple cut-back instead of Onuachu, who would have had an open goal to tap into. Temperatures rose half an hour into the match after a succession of unfavourable decisions by referee Thomas Bramall began to frustrate Saints. Tyrone Mings and Jack Stephens disagreed, while Ramsdale sarcastically clapped Marco Asensio for attempting to take a free-kick quickly while he was out of the goal. That free-kick was eventually crossed and cleared easily, as the visitors managed 64 per cent of the ball by half-time but failed to test Ramsdale at all. Rusk had to make a change during the break; Onuachu, who was a fitness doubt ahead of the game, was replaced by teenager Tyler Dibling. Saints made a bad start to the second period, but Villa failed to take advantage of their opportunities before the boss could make more changes. Returning Ross Stewart was tasked with playing 30 minutes after a late cameo at Spurs, while midfielder Will Smallbone was also called upon. Villa were handed a way to take the lead from the spot after Walker-Peters conceded possession and Jan Bednarek slid in on Watkins. However, Ramsdale got across to his left to push Asensio's effort away and prompt St Mary's to erupt as though Saints had themselves scored. He could do nothing to prevent his England teammate's genius just minutes later, when Watkins executed a volleyed chip off the crossbar and in. Saints surrounded the referee, incensed, demanding an explanation for a foul not given on Fernandes earlier, but possession had been turned over since. Saints had launched forward on an attack of their own before Dibling, with limited options, lost the ball, and the Villans countered to make it 1-0. Villa made it two by the 80th minute, when Morgan Rogers slipped a pass to Malen in behind the left-back and the Dutchman finished across Ramsdale. Saints had a couple of positive moments. Mateus Fernandes nearly caught Martinez out with a strike from the edge of the area, but the Argentine saved. Rusk then handed a Premier League debut to 18 year old England youth international Jay Robinson, after the forward's stellar academy form. The third goal came as McGinn was felled by Stephens in added time, giving Spaniard Asensio a chance to atone for his earlier penalty saved. He was not able to do so, going the same way and enduring the same result, but Ramsdale could not keep out McGinn's rebound. Saints: Ramsdale; Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Stephens; Walker-Peters, Ugochukwu, Fernandes (Robinson, 89), Manning (Sugawara, 82); Kamaldeen (Smallbone, 60); Archer (Stewart, 60), Onuachu (Dibling, h-t). Unused subs: McCarthy, Aribo, Bree, Wood. Booked: Fernandes, Harwood-Bellis, McGinn. Aston Villa: Martinez, Cash (Garcia, 85), Konsa, Mings, Maatsen, Tielemans, Onana (Kamara, 89), Ramsey (Malen, 65), Rogers (McGinn, 85), Asensio, Rashford (Watkins, 65). Unused subs: Olsen, Disasi, Digne. Booked: McGinn. Referee: Thomas Bramall. VAR: Tim Robinson.

Southampton 1-1 Crystal Palace: Saints denied by late goal
Given how Southampton's season has gone, the end to Wednesday's draw with Crystal Palace was fittingly Saints were looking for just a third win of the campaign, one that wouldn't save them from relegation but would stop them from making an unwated piece of started the night on nine points, two fewer than the record low Premier League points tally of 11 set by Derby County in Onuachu's first-half header looked to be enough to take Saints to 12 points, and in truth they would have deserved in one man's pain can be found another's joy - in this case Matheus Palace substitute rose highest to head home an equaliser in the second minute of stoppage time, his first goal for the club after an injury-wrecked 20 months at the were unfortunate not to win, but if they replicate this performance at least once in their remaining eight games, they should move above the dreaded 12-point mark.

Solskjaer wants to take Onuachu to Besiktas
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen on Southampton forward Paul Onuachu to bolster his attacking options at Besiktas, according to Turkish outlet Fotomac. Southampton are destined for relegation, and clubs will look to poach their top players when they drop into the Championship. Besiktas president Ahmet Nur Cebi has scheduled talks with Southampton co-owner Rasmus Ankersen to discuss their interest in Onuachu. He will enter the final year of his contract at St Mary's this summer, With relegation looming, he is not keen to extend his stay. If Southampton intend to cash in, this summer is their best opportunity. The Nigerian striker did not play much under Russell Martin, but he has featured more since he was sacked. Solskjaer views Onuachu as the type of striker his attack desperately needs, but he is not his first-choice target. Besiktas have also been monitoring Ipswich Town's Liam Delap, but their chances of signing him are minimal. Delap has been linked with several Premier League clubs and he is unlikely to consider a move to one of the lower-ranked leagues in Europe. Onuachu previously excelled on loan at Trabzonspor in 2023/24, scoring 17 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions. His sale could boost Southampton's transfer kitty as they strive to bounce back from a miserable season in the Premier League.
