Ramsdale saves two penalties as Rusk's Saints beaten by Aston Villa
A SECOND-half penalty save by Aaron Ramsdale - the first of two - preserved hope of a point before Saints were beaten 3-0 by Aston Villa.
Ramsdale had denied Marco Asensio from the spot with just 20 minutes left, but a bit of brilliance by Ollie Watkins opened the scoring 180 seconds later.
Donyell Malen doubled the advantage to make it two goals from Villa substitutes, while Watkins had also won the spot-kick that was not converted.
Ramsdale spectacularly saved a second penalty in added time, denying Asensio again, but John McGinn turned in the rebound to spare his blushes.
Saints have been beaten 26 times in their 32 Premier League matches this season, setting their new record for league defeats in a single campaign.
It also meant defeat in the first match of interim boss Simon Rusk's second spell in the dugout, and for Adam Lallana in his first match as assistant.
Only the second time in their history that Saints have failed to win 11 successive home matches in the league. Rusk only made two personnel changes from the side's 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday, but they came with a system overhaul.
He replaced Joe Aribo and Tyler Dibling with Jack Stephens and Paul Onuachu, returning to a 5-2-3 formation with Mateus Fernandes playing deeper.
Cameron Archer and Kamaldeen Sulemana flanked target man Onuachu, giving Saints bodies in defence and something tangible to play into.
It worked well and should have resulted in a lead 15 minutes into the match, after a brilliant ball from Kyle Walker-Peters unleashed Archer.
However, the former Villa man found Emi Martinez with a simple cut-back instead of Onuachu, who would have had an open goal to tap into.
Temperatures rose half an hour into the match after a succession of unfavourable decisions by referee Thomas Bramall began to frustrate Saints.
Tyrone Mings and Jack Stephens disagreed, while Ramsdale sarcastically clapped Marco Asensio for attempting to take a free-kick quickly while he was out of the goal.
That free-kick was eventually crossed and cleared easily, as the visitors managed 64 per cent of the ball by half-time but failed to test Ramsdale at all.
Rusk had to make a change during the break; Onuachu, who was a fitness doubt ahead of the game, was replaced by teenager Tyler Dibling.
Saints made a bad start to the second period, but Villa failed to take advantage of their opportunities before the boss could make more changes.
Returning Ross Stewart was tasked with playing 30 minutes after a late cameo at Spurs, while midfielder Will Smallbone was also called upon.
Villa were handed a way to take the lead from the spot after Walker-Peters conceded possession and Jan Bednarek slid in on Watkins.
However, Ramsdale got across to his left to push Asensio's effort away and prompt St Mary's to erupt as though Saints had themselves scored.
He could do nothing to prevent his England teammate's genius just minutes later, when Watkins executed a volleyed chip off the crossbar and in.
Saints surrounded the referee, incensed, demanding an explanation for a foul not given on Fernandes earlier, but possession had been turned over since.
Saints had launched forward on an attack of their own before Dibling, with limited options, lost the ball, and the Villans countered to make it 1-0.
Villa made it two by the 80th minute, when Morgan Rogers slipped a pass to Malen in behind the left-back and the Dutchman finished across Ramsdale.
Saints had a couple of positive moments. Mateus Fernandes nearly caught Martinez out with a strike from the edge of the area, but the Argentine saved.
Rusk then handed a Premier League debut to 18 year old England youth international Jay Robinson, after the forward's stellar academy form.
The third goal came as McGinn was felled by Stephens in added time, giving Spaniard Asensio a chance to atone for his earlier penalty saved.
He was not able to do so, going the same way and enduring the same result, but Ramsdale could not keep out McGinn's rebound.
Saints: Ramsdale; Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Stephens; Walker-Peters, Ugochukwu, Fernandes (Robinson, 89), Manning (Sugawara, 82); Kamaldeen (Smallbone, 60); Archer (Stewart, 60), Onuachu (Dibling, h-t).
Unused subs: McCarthy, Aribo, Bree, Wood.

Man City's lesson shows Juventus need more than Tudor says
Igor Tudor feels Juventus need three reinforcements to become credible title contenders next season, but a 5-2 loss against Manchester City proved the Bianconeri will require more new faces. Juventus faced a brutal reality check on Thursday, suffering a 5-2 loss to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. The Bianconeri had already qualified for the Club World Cup Round of 16 following victories against Al Ain and Wydad and only needed a draw to win Group G. Advertisement Even if Juventus had beaten Manchester City in the Champions League in November under Thiago Motta, the Premier League giants' latest win wasn't really surprising, except for the scale of their triumph. ORLANDO, FLORIDA – JUNE 26: Phil Foden #47 of Manchester City scores his team's fourth goal during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group G match between Juventus FC and Manchester City FC at Camping World Stadium on June 26, 2025 in Orlando, Florida. (Photo by) The scoreline says everything you know about the game, even more than Man City's 24 shots against Juventus' five and the seven Michele Di Gregorio's saves against Ederson's none. True, Igor Tudor had rotated the team considerably, starting a few key players on the bench, including Kenan Yildiz, Randal Kolo Muani, and Andrea Cambiaso, and giving, perhaps, a final chance to the struggling Teun Koopmeiners, Nico Gonzalez, and Dusan Vlahovic. Advertisement Tudor reiterated at the start of the Club World Cup, and even before that, after the final Serie A match of the season, against Venezia, that the Bianconeri would need three new signings to be genuine title contenders next season. Nevertheless, the result and the performance against Manchester City suggest otherwise. What Juventus need in defence and midfield epa12014617 Juventus Manuel Locatelli jubilates after scoring the opening goal during the Italian Serie A soccer match AS Roma vs Juventus FC at Olimpico stadium in Rome, Italy, 06 April 2025. EPA-EFE/ANGELO CARCONI Gleison Bremer will be like a new signing in defence, returning to action after a tricky ligament injury sustained in October. However, if Pierre Kalulu is the starting right central defender in a 3-4-2-1 formation, then the Bianconeri will need a new face at the back unless Federico Gatti is used on the left-hand side of the backline or the inconsistent Lloyd Kelly is tasked with the job. Advertisement Moving into the midfield department, Juventus will surely need a right or left wing-back as Andrea Cambiaso can play on either flank. On the right, Alberto Costa showed decent developments, especially in the final third of the pitch during the Club World Cup, but his performance against Manchester City suggests he still has a lot of work to do defensively. ORLANDO, FLORIDA – JUNE 26: Pierre Kalulu #15 of Juventus FC reacts after conceding an own goal scored for Manchester City's second goal during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group G match between Juventus FC and Manchester City FC at Camping World Stadium on June 26, 2025 in Orlando, Florida. (Photo by) Nico Gonzalez was one of the wingers signed with Thiago Motta last summer, but the Argentine is struggling to adapt to a right-wing-back position with more defensive duties than a custom attacking winger, and has also failed to deliver consistently as an attacking midfielder, contrary to Francisco Conceiçao. In central midfield, Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram appear to be the designated starters, but Juventus need more quality in the core of the pitch, and considering an upgrade on Locatelli should not be out of question. Could Teun Koopmeiners be the man replacing Locatelli as the team's playmaker? Debatable, mainly because the Dutchman has played five of his six games under Tudor as an attacking midfielder. Advertisement Kenan Yildiz will surely be the man to watch in Turin next season. In the game against Manchester City, he set up Dusan Vlahovic twice, seeing the Serbian waste the first chance and find the net with his second attempt. But who could partner Yildiz behind a lone striker? Yet again, Koopmeiners is an option, but he desperately needs to regain confidence and be more effective in front of the goal, while Conceiçao has shown good progress in the Club World Cup. Kolo Muani key to Juventus transfer strategy in attack PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA – JUNE 22: Kenan Yildiz #10 of Juventus FC celebrates scoring his team's third goal with Randal Kolo Muani #20 of Juventus FC during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group G match between Juventus FC and Wydad AC at Lincoln Financial Field on June 22, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by) Nevertheless, the Portuguese is on loan at Juventus, who must pay €30m to make his move permanent from Porto. According to Gazzetta, the number one alternative to Chico is Manchester United's outcast Jadon Sancho. Advertisement Last but not least, there's the attack. Yet again, Kolo Muani is on loan from PSG until the end of the Club World Cup, and Juventus must negotiate a longer deal with the Ligue 1 giants, knowing that the France international would be glad to stay at the Allianz Stadium. On the other hand, Vlahovic is tipped to leave as his contract expires in 2026 and he has shown no desire to continue with the Old Lady. This means Juventus will need one new centre forward if Kolo Muani stays, otherwise they'll be looking for two central strikers. The main name linked with a move to Juventus these days is Jonathan David, who has already reached an agreement with the Serie A giants but is waiting for his representatives to finalise the details regarding agent fees. With the Bianconeri competing in three competitions again next season, including the Champions League, it's predictable that they'll need at least four or five new signings to be competitive again in 2025-26. The latest defeat against Manchester City clearly showed that many of those who started the game can't be offered a guaranteed spot in the Bianconeri's XI next season.

Lionel Messi, Inter Miami drive Club World Cup ratings
Lionel Messi, arguably the most recognizable player in the Club World Cup, is steering viewership to his underdog team. Messi and his Inter Miami teammates are helping the expanded tournament draw U.S. television ratings that are roughly comparable to those of the Premier League in the recently concluded season. Club World Cup broadcasts in English on TNT Sports (TNT, TBS and truTV) were averaging 360,000 through Wednesday, per Sports Media Watch. Sports Business Journal noted that the highly popular Premier League drew 394,000 per match on USA Network in the 2024-25 season. Only a small number of Club World Cup are carried by TNT Sports, with all matches available on DAZN. Three of the top seven English-language telecasts on TNT Sports featured Inter Miami, led by 676,000 tuning in to see the Major League Soccer side draw 2-2 with Brazil's Palmeiras on Monday. The Miami matches attracted even larger viewership on Spanish-language broadcasts. Inter Miami drew 0-0 with Egypt's Al Ahly (371,000 viewers), then earned an upset 2-1 win over Portugal's Porto (349,000) before the tie with Palmeiras. Those results allowed Messi & Co. to finish second in Group A, setting up a Round of 16 matchup with Paris Saint-Germain that should be a rating bonanza. The Sunday contest in Atlanta pits Messi against the team he represented immediately before coming to Miami. And PSG are the newly crowned winners of the UEFA Champions League, the most prestigious continental club tournament. According to Sports Media Watch, the CONCACAF Gold Cup matchup on Sunday between the U.S. men's national team and Haiti attracted an audience of 1.2 million viewers on Fox. The U.S. won 2-1 to finish atop its group and set up a Sunday quarterfinal contest against Costa Rica in Minneapolis. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Sky Sports: Fulham Pushing to Sign 17-Goal Brazilian Striker
Fulham Eye Brazilian Talent Romulo in Ambitious Striker Pursuit Fulham appear to be taking strides in the transfer market with their sights firmly set on Göztepe striker Romulo, according to reports originally published by Sky Sports. The West London club, known for their measured yet ambitious recruitment strategy, are believed to be pushing for a deal that would bring the 23-year-old Brazilian forward to Craven Cottage ahead of the 2025–26 Premier League campaign. Romulo's Rise in Turkey Romulo's emergence in Turkish football has not gone unnoticed. The Göztepe forward registered an impressive 17 goals and 10 assists across all competitions last season, sparking interest from a number of European clubs. Advertisement Fulham, according to Sky Sports, have already tested the waters with a reported €16 million bid, though this was turned down by the Turkish outfit, who value the player closer to €20 million. Photo: IMAGO Such output in a single season highlights Romulo's all-round attacking threat and hints at his growing potential. At 23, he's entering his peak years and appears to possess the profile Fulham are seeking as they aim to evolve from mid-table consistency to a genuine top-half presence. Fulham's Forward Options Require Reinforcement Despite some attacking flair last season, Fulham's goalscoring record has drawn criticism. The departure of Aleksandar Mitrovic left a noticeable void, and while Rodrigo Muniz showed flashes of brilliance, consistency at Premier League level remains a work in progress. Advertisement The pursuit of Romulo signals intent. It's not just about numbers, it's about profile. Romulo offers a blend of pace, sharp movement and clinical finishing that aligns with Marco Silva's attacking philosophy. He also carries that added South American edge, often seen in players who bring tenacity and flair in equal measure. Negotiations Underway Amidst Growing Interest While Fulham are reportedly leading the race, they are not alone in monitoring Romulo. According to the Sky Sports report, 'he has several suitors across Europe,' underlining the competition that could complicate matters. However, Fulham's willingness to table a €16 million offer shows serious intent. With pre-season rapidly approaching, time is of the essence if the Cottagers hope to integrate a new striker into Silva's system effectively. Advertisement If they are to close the gap to Göztepe's valuation, Fulham may need to offer closer to €20 million, possibly with performance-related add-ons to sweeten the deal. Strategy and Timing Will Be Key Romulo's potential arrival would not only boost Fulham's attacking depth but also act as a statement of ambition. While negotiations continue, Fulham must weigh their options carefully. Securing a player with such an upward trajectory could prove a masterstroke if managed efficiently. Our View – EPL Index Analysis As a Fulham supporter, this news is genuinely exciting. Finally, the club is chasing a forward who has both the statistics and the energy to make a real difference. Romulo's 17 goals and 10 assists are not just numbers, they are evidence of a player who can influence games from multiple positions in attack. Advertisement Fans have longed for a replacement for Mitrović who doesn't just wait for chances, but creates them. Romulo seems to be that player. He's quick, hungry, and at 23 years old, he fits the mould of a modern Premier League forward. If Silva can mould him into the system early, he could be one of the signings of the summer. What excites me most is the potential partnership between Romulo and Muniz. With Willian and Pereira pulling the strings behind them, we could be looking at a forward line full of flair and unpredictability. And given Fulham's growing reputation for improving players, this feels like a calculated risk worth taking. Paying the full €20 million? If he fires us into the top half or better, it'll be money well spent.
