Wolfsburg hires surprise Dutch Cup winner Paul Simonis as new coach
Associated Press WOLFSBURG, Germany (AP) — Wolfsburg hired Paul Simonis as its new coach on Thursday after he won the Netherlands' top cup competition with his previous club Go Ahead Eagles. The 40-year-old Simonis joins on a two-year contract with a task to 'realign VfL Wolfsburg with fresh impetus,' managing director for sport Peter Christiansen said. Simonis' Dutch Cup win with Go Ahead Eagles in April was a surprise for a club which hadn't won a major trophy in 92 years, and came in his first career head coach role. The team's league finish of seventh was also its best in decades. He replaced Ralph Hasenhüttl after the former Southampton and Leipzig coach was fired with two games remaining of the Bundesliga. Wolfsburg finished 11th under stand-in Daniel Bauer. Simonis will be Wolfsburg's sixth permanent coach since 2021, the last year when it qualified for the men's Champions League. ___ AP soccer: in this topic

Wolfsburg appoint Paul Simonis as their new head coach
Wolfsburg has announced that it has appointed Paul Simonis as its new head coach, replacing Ralph Hasenhüttl. The Dutch head coach joins from Eredivisie side Go Ahead Eagles and signs a contract in the Autostadt until 2027. Several names had been linked with the vacant Wolfsburg job following Hasenhüttl's exit earlier this season. Advertisement This season, Simonis led the Dutch side to their first-ever KNVB Cup win after they beat AZ Alkmaar in the final on penalties. It was their first major title win in 92 years. In the league, Go Ahead Eagles finished seventh. On joining Wolfsburg, Simonis said: 'I can't wait to take on this challenge and work with the team, the staff, and the environment. I had very good and comprehensive discussions at a high level with Peter Christiansen, Sebastian Schindzielorz, and also with Sebastian Rudolph. This immediately gave me the feeling that this decision was the right step. I'm really looking forward to working at a top level in a very strong and exciting league.' This season, Wolfsburg finished 11th and since qualifying for the Champions League under Oliver Glasner in the 2020/21 season, the Autostadt side have finished 12th, eighth, 12th and now 11th. They have also gone through four coaches with Mark van Bommel, Florian Kohfeldt, Niko Kovac, and now Hasenhüttl all getting the sack, despite spending a ridiculous amount of money in the transfer market.
