Russell Martin rapidly defies his own Rangers transfer expectations amid curious case of Nobel Mendy
Gers went from nothing imminent to a deal almost done and replacement identified while another collapsed abruptly On Friday, Russell Martin was preaching patience over Ibrox exits as he expected those he wanted to move on to take their time and hang around until nearer the end of the transfer window. Within 24 hours, he confirmed that one had a foot out the door and Rangers were set for a nice little earner with two weeks left until deadline day. Martin hasn't hidden the fact that he needs to trim his squad after eight signings so far this summer. But as he previewed Saturday's Premier Sports Cup win over Alloa, he didn't sound like a man who was just waiting on i's being dotted and t's being crossed before sending someone on their way. "No, I think we're in the same situation really," he said. "There's some guys who probably know their future lies away and I'm sure their agents are working hard on that. "But apart from that I think we're pretty much as is and that might not change until towards the end of the window when circumstances change and teams need something late on. It's often the way." However, within 24 hours it was all changed with Jefte on the verge of a £6million move back to Brazil with Palmeiras, which had started to emerge last week. "Jefte was in yesterday (Friday), and then by yesterday evening, he's maybe not going to be here moving forward because it's a good deal for him and the club. 'So we'll see what happens over the next couple of days with that. We have to be ready to replace him, and we always have been ready." Ready, it seems, means trying to do a deal for Brentford left back Jayden Meghoma. 'So Jayden, a player we know from Southampton, spent a year with us as a young boy, training every day, understands the work, top talent, plays for England at all the youth levels," said Martin. 'Brentford signed him for a lot of money for a teenager, and he went on loan last year in the Championship and did really well. 'So he's a player we know and like, and hopefully at some point he'll be a Rangers player and you'll know that when he is.' There's also the curious case of Nobel Mendy. The Betis defender was going to Rayo Vallecano. Then he performed a u-turn and was set for Ibrox. We had Betis directors saying they expected the deal to happen. Martin said on Friday that he'd 'never spoken to Nobel Mendy" and if that's the case, then holding your breath on any deal being resurrected wouldn't be the wisest move.

Club Brugge will attempt to fend off more interest for one of their most proficient forwards ahead of facing Rangers in the Champions League play-offs. The Belgian side are due at Ibrox on Tuesday night for the first leg of their tie before welcoming Rangers back to the Jan Breydel Stadium a week on Wednesday for the return game. The winner will advance to the main phase of the Champions League. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad However, Club Brugge's resolve is set to be tested in the transfer market after it emerged that English Premier League side Crystal Palace hold a significant interest in their Greek forward Christos Tzolis. Greek forward Christos Tzolis is a key part of Club Brugge's front line. | Getty Images Palace are preparing for life without their own star man in Eberechi Eze, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, and reports on Sunday morning claimed that Tzolis has been identified by Eagles head coach Oliver Glasner and his recruitment team as a potential replacement. Tzolis, 23, signed a contract extension with Club Brugge last month until the summer of 2029 and would command a large transfer fee. He contributed 21 goals and 14 assists, predominantly from left wing, last season after joining from Fortuna Dusseldorf. Capped 24 times by Greece, Tzolis is still expected to travel to Glasgow on Monday afternoon to prepare for the match against Rangers despite the heightened demand for his services. Club Brugge are reported to have turned down an approach for him from Palace earlier this summer, but are now braced for a further bid and will not want speculation over the player's future to disrupt their preparations for a key Champions League match. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Tzolis is key player for Club Brugge Tzolis has started all of Club Brugge's competitive matches this season, providing three goals and two assists, and put in a stellar performance last Wednesday as the Belgians overcame Salzburg to set up the match against Rangers. He played the full 90 minutes on Saturday evening as Club Brugge won 1-0 away at Waregem in the Jupiler Pro League, relying on a strike from South African 20-year-old Shandre Campbell in stoppage time to clinch the win. In the last round, Rangers benefitted from opponents Viktoria Plzen being rocked by the transfer of their key midfielder Pavel Sulc, who was granted permission to seal a move to Lyon 24 hours ahead of the first leg at Ibrox. Rangers went on to win 3-0 before losing the second leg 2-1 in Czech Republic. Club Brugge are the favourites to win against Rangers across the two legs of the Champions League play-off tie. The two teams met in a pre-season friendly last month at Ibrox, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Tzolis played the first half and helped the Belgians establish a 2-0 lead before they made significant changes to their team.

Kairat boss suffers nightmare Celtic warm up as players blasted over 'childish' goals in title stumble
Rafael Urakhtin did not like what he saw from his men ahead of the mammoth journey to Glasgow for Champions League clash Rafael Urakhtin blasted his Kairat Almaty players for conceding 'childish goals' after they suffered an extraordinary collapse ahead of taking on Celtic in the Champions League. Celtic go head-to-head with the Kazakh dark horses on Wednesday for the £40million jackpot that comes with league phase qualification. But Kairat's preparation has been disastrous as they blew a two-goal lead at home to Yelimay Semey to lose 3-2. It's in stark contrast to Brendan Rodgers ' men, who blew Falkirk away on Friday night to book their spot in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals. It was only their third league loss in 20 matches and Urakhtin was far from happy ahead of the mammoth journey to Glasgow. He said: "We have no time to grieve about this result because we are preparing for a very important match in Scotland and have a long journey to make. "But it was a disappointing defeat for us. "We were a long way from our best defensively and we conceded childish goals. "If you are fighting for the league title, you cannot concede goals like this. "The players actually carried out the instructions for losing those goals. "We knew they would be difficult to break down, but we managed to do then we conceded stupid goals. "When my players perform well, I praise them, but when we make such basic mistakes like we did, then I have to point it out."
