This Top Actress Banned From Driving For 6 Months After Speeding Violation

Last Updated: The actress has been banned from driving for six months after a 2024 speeding offense in Oxford. She did not attend the court hearing. Emma Watson has been banned from driving for six months following a speeding violation that took place in 2024. The Harry Potter star was caught on camera driving at 38 mph in a 30 mph zone in Oxford, England. The court ruling came nearly a year after the incident, with a magistrate officially suspending her licence on Wednesday. Watson already had nine penalty points on her driving record prior to the latest offense, leading to the automatic six-month driving ban. The 35-year-old actress-turned-student was also ordered to pay a total of £1,044 in fines and costs by the High Wycombe Magistrates' Court. Although Watson did not appear in person for the brief five-minute hearing, her lawyer Mark Haslam was present and confirmed that the actress had the means to pay the fine. 'She is in a position to pay the fine," he told the court. Haslam also shared that Watson is currently pursuing a master's degree in creative writing at the University of Oxford, a program she began in 2023. Emma Watson rose to fame in 2001 as Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and went on to star in all eight films of the beloved franchise. After Harry Potter, she appeared in several major Hollywood productions including The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Bling Ring, and Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast. Her most recent acting credit was in Greta Gerwig's 2019 adaptation of Little Women. Outside of acting, Watson has become an advocate for sustainability and gender equality. In 2023, she co-launched a sustainable gin brand with her brother. Despite stepping back from acting, she continues to remain in the public eye through her activism, academic pursuits, and entrepreneurial efforts. Meanwhile, a new television adaptation of Harry Potter is currently in production at HBO, with a fresh cast led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron. The series is expected to unfold over a decade, reimagining J.K. Rowling's world for a new generation. view comments First Published: July 16, 2025, 23:42 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Emma Watson and Harry Potter co-star receive driving bans for speeding

'Harry Potter' star Emma Watson has been banned from driving for six months. The British actress, who played Hermione Grainger in the wizarding franchise, was caught speeding one evening in Oxford in July last year. According to the magistrates court in High Wycombe, the 35-year-old, drove her Audi S3 at 61kmh in a 50kmh zone. She already had nine points on her driving licence. In Britain, if you accumulate 12 points within a three year period, you can be disqualified from sitting behind the wheel for at least six months. Watson also received a fine of €1,152 and did not attend the five-minute hearing on Wednesday. It's unclear how the ruling will affect her ability to continue studying at the University of Oxford for a master's degree in creative writing. She started the course in 2023. In a quirky coincidence for law enforcement, Watson's former co-star Zoe Wanamaker was also penalised for excess speed by the same court and also didn't appear before judges. The 76-year-old actress, who played Madam Hooch in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was caught speeding in August last year in the town of Newbury in Berkshire. The magistrates' were told that she was driving her Volvo at 74kmh in a 70kmh zone. Like Watson, she too had nine points on her licence and was fined €1,152 and given a a six-month ban.

Harry Potter stars Emma Watson, Zoe Wanamaker banned from driving for six months. Here's why

Two stars from the Harry Potter film series — Emma Watson and Zoe Wanamaker — have been banned from driving for six months after being caught speeding in separate incidents, according to PA Media. Emma Watson, 35, known globally for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise, was clocked driving her blue Audi at 38 miles per hour in a 30-mph zone in Oxford, England, on July 31, 2023. She was not present at the brief hearing held at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, where she was fined £1,044 ($1,400) and handed a six-month driving disqualification. Watson's lawyer told the court that the actress, who is currently studying at Oxford University, is able to pay the fine despite being a student. The speeding offence added three points to her license, which already had nine penalty points — triggering an automatic driving ban under UK law. Zoe Wanamaker, 76, who played Quidditch referee Madam Hooch in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, received the same sentence after being caught driving at 46 mph in a 40-mph zone on the M4 motorway in Berkshire in August 2023. Like Watson, Wanamaker did not attend the hearing, and was also fined £1,044 ($1,400). She too had nine existing points on her license, and the addition of three more led to the mandatory six-month suspension. Under UK law, accumulating 12 or more penalty points on a driving license typically results in an automatic six-month disqualification. Both cases were handled separately but on the same day at the magistrates' court in High Wycombe.
