Real Madrid goal machine could wear the No. 10 jersey next season

Real Madrid goal machine could wear the No. 10 jersey next season Kylian Mbappe has been going through a tough time ever since landing on US soil earlier this month. The Frenchman is suffering from a viral illness, which has taken a heavy toll on his body while forcing him to miss Real Madrid's opening two matches in the FIFA Club World Cup. Advertisement Reports suggest Mbappe may have lost around 4-5 kilos due to his viral illness and the player could even miss Real Madrid's next match against RB Salzburg. Mbappe may wear number ten shirt next season While Mbappe's fitness is definitely a concern, MARCA reports that there is also some chatter going on about the Frenchman's shirt number next season. After a stellar debut campaign wearing number 9, where he plundered 43 goals to win the Pichichi and the European Golden Boot, a significant change could be on the horizon. The iconic number 10 jersey, long owned by club legend Luka Modric, will be vacant following the Croatian's departure at the conclusion of the Club World Cup. That spot now could be occupied by Mbappe. Mbappe dons the number ten shirt for France. (Photo by) Advertisement When the Frenchman initially arrived, there was no debate about the number, as it rightly belonged to Modric, so the Frenchman took the number 9 shirt. But with Modric leaving, Real Madrid need to fill up the number ten slot and there is no better candidate than Mbappe. Mbappe wears the iconic number ten shirt for Les Bleus and used to wear the same number during his time at AS Monaco. At PSG, Mbappe never surprisingly donned the number 10 kit, primarily playing with the number seven kit. While Mbappe has not requested the change, the Real Madrid hierarchy believes that the number 10 would cement his status as the undisputed leader and star of the current project.

Real Madrid submit contract offer to 21-goal forward

Real Madrid sorely missed the presence of Joselu Mato this season, with the veteran departing to Qatar last summer following the signing of Endrick Felipe. The Spain international was a key weapon under Carlo Ancelotti, and now Los Blancos are seeking to replicate his impact next season under Xabi Alonso. It was reported recently that Real Madrid could look to strengthen with a classic number nine figure to give them extra depth and a different option. The top of their shortlist was supposedly Croatia and Osasuna forward Ante Budimir, and now Fichajes, via Sport, say that Los Blancos have indeed made an offer to him. Osasuna stance on Budimir exit Real Madrid are said to have offered a €3m annual salary to Budimir, who has attracted interest from the likes of Real Betis, Real Socieddad, Roma and Juventus, who have enquired about his availability. The 33-year-old has an €8m release clause, the same price that Los Rojillo paid for him, but if a club the size of Real Madrid came in for him, Osasuna would negotiate. Advertisement It is also noted that Los Blancos could offer to loan one of their Castilla strikers in exchange too, with Alvaro Rodriguez and Gonzalo Garcia Torres looking for new homes this summer. Image via Villar López / EFE Budimir's season at Osasuna Budimir became the top scorer in the history of Osasuna in La Liga last season, in total netting 24 goals in 42 games in Pamplona. Only Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe scored more goals than Budimir's 21 in the league, placing him third in the Pichichi race, despite playing for a side that struggled for opportunities. In total, Budimir accounted for just under 44% of their Liga goals. Alternatives to Budimir? Real Madrid have supposedly drawn up a shortlist of number nines that could fill the role of Joselu last season. Budimir is atop that list, but Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic, Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, Patrick Schick at Bayer Leverkusen, and Stuttgart's Nick Woltemade were named as potential options.

'I had to adapt to the team, and adapt to the country with a new language, a new culture. Now I think about it I feel very good at the club, in the team, in the city, in the country, and you can see that on the pitch,' he added. While as said Madrid might not have landed major silverware under the since departed Carlo Ancelotti, it lifted the UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup with the Club World Cup next month providing the chance to seal a treble of sorts. 'It's a great competition, in the United States, with everyone watching and looking forward to it. As I say, it's something new for us so we're going to try to win it,' the Frenchman then promised. Ahead of a new La Liga campaign and attempt to dethrone FC Barcelona, new Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso can test the waters at the Club World Cup. In the US, Luka Modric will play his last minutes in his iconic Los Blancos shirt ahead of moving on.

Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski responds to missing out on Pichichi to Kylian Mbappé

Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski responds to missing out on Pichichi to Kylian Mbappé Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski has on Sunday spoken out on his pursuit of top-scorer honours in La Liga coming up short. Frontman Lewandowski, for his part, is fresh off his latest goalscoring outing this evening. Advertisement After Barcelona made the trip to the Basque Country for a La Liga meeting with Athletic Club, the Pole notched both of his side's goals en route to a 2-0 triumph. This, however, did not prove enough to get the Pole even within touching distance of Pichichi winner Kylian Mbappé. After finding the net to the tune of a brace of his own against Real Sociedad on Saturday, Real Madrid's star summer addition took his tally for the campaign in Spain's top-flight to 31 goals. Lewandowski, on the other hand, finished the campaign with 27 to his name. After the latter led the race for the Pichichi throughout much of the term, he was in turn drawn on the situation post-match at San Mamés tonight. And Lewandowski went on to admit: 'I feel a little sad that I couldn't win the Pichichi award. I struggled a bit to return to my best shape after my injury, but that's normal.' Conor Laird – GSFN

Mbappe adds a little lustre to Real season with Golden Shoe

Real Madrid may have won no trophies, but their French Galactico Kylian Mbappe ended his first season in Spain by collecting two individual scoring awards: the European Golden Shoe and the award for top scorer in La Liga. Mbappe scored twice in Real Madrid's final league game on Saturday to overtake Viktor Gyokeres, whose league season at Sporting Lisbon ended the previous week, at the top of the weighted table which counts only league goals. Mbappe ended with 31 league goals as he became the third Real Madrid player to win the award, after Mexicans Hugo Sanchez (1989-1990) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2010-2011, 2013-2014, 2014-2015). The last Frenchman to collect the Golden Shoe was Thierry Henry, who won it in 2004 and 2005 with Arsenal. Mbappe could have been caught on Sunday, while he was in Monaco watching the Formula One Grand Prix. Mohammed Salah, who needed a hat-trick in English champions Liverpool's last league game, scored once to finish third with 29 goals. Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski, already certain to finish ahead of Real Madrid in the race for the Spanish league title, scored twice at Bilbao. He totalled 27 goals, for fourth place in Europe and second in the Pichichi, the award for the top scorer in La Liga. The Pole won the Golden Shoe twice with Bayern and claimed the Pichichi in 2023. Last year's Golden Shoe winner, Harry Kane, finished fifth with 26 Bundesliga goals to go with his league champion's medal at Bayern Munich. Mateo Retegui, with 25 for Atalanta, was the top Serie A player, in sixth place. Gyokeres out-scored Mbappe with 39 goals, but the table is weighted. Each goal in the 'big five' European competitions -- La Liga, Premier League, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Serie A -- is doubled. For the next 16 ranked leagues, goals are multiplied by 1.5. Below that a goal is just a goal. Estonian Alex Tamm totalled 34 league goals, spread over two seasons but finished only 27th. He hit 28 for Kalju in his native Estonia, which plays a summer season, and six more after moving to Olimpija Ljubljana in Slovenia in Februray.
