Sg Pontian Besar Bridge upgrade to begin in October

PONTIAN: The project to upgrade the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge from two lanes to four lanes is expected to begin as early as October, said Deputy Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. The deputy minister said the RM49 million project is expected to be completed within three years, involving the widening of the 250-metre bridge's lanes, including the road leading to the bridge. 'I would like to inform you that the government has agreed to widen the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge from two lanes to four lanes, and construction will begin at the end of this year. 'All tender matters and so on will be handled in September or October. We will invite Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi for the project's groundbreaking ceremony, which is expected to be in October,' he told reporters after conducting a working visit to the bridge here today. He said the project was important to avoid congestion between the two main bridges in the district. Elaborating further, Ahmad said the new bridge will also feature landmark elements or iconic structures that will become a tourist attraction in the Pontian district. He said the two iconic structures, shaped like sailboats and pineapple-themed decorations on the sides of the bridge, are expected to be among the latest unique attractions in the district. 'It is a bridge with specific landmarks and can be quite a positive upgrade for this area... the landmarks will be placed on the left and right sides of the bridge. Let's keep it a secret (its uniqueness),' he said. He said the addition of the iconic element is hoped to support the government's efforts to make Pontian, including Tanjung Piai, one of the main tourist centres in Johor, especially in the lead up to the Visit Johor Year 2026. He also said that the Public Works Ministry is in the process of submitting an application to widen another major bridge, the Parit Semerah Bridge, at an estimated cost of RM25 million through the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). In other developments, he added that the Pontian Hospital Expansion Project is scheduled to begin this year and is targeted for completion within six months, earlier than the original schedule of one year. Previously, Ahmad and Ministry of Public Works secretary-general Datuk Seri Azman Ibrahim conducted a working visit to the Public Works Department (JKR) office in the Pontian district before continuing a series of visits to project sites, including the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge and Pontian Hospital. - Bernama

Arida residents fear flooding of the al-Kabir River due to public works ministry projects

Residents of the border town of Arida in Akkar district, northern Lebanon, have expressed worries that their homes and fields might flood because of a dam built by the Public Works Ministry at the mouth of the Nahr al-Kabir River. This is due to work carried out to reopen the Arida border crossing between Lebanon and Syria and to make it easier for cars and buses to pass, our northern Lebanon correspondent reports. During a symbolic sit-in on Saturday in front of the Arida border post, they also protested the disruptions and additional expenses these projects cause fishermen, who are now forced to moor their boats outside the fishing port. Residents also voiced their fear, with winter approaching, of an al-Kabir River flood after part of its bed was blocked by debris due to the destruction of the bridge by Israeli airstrikes during the recent war between Israel and Hezbollah. "The high river flow will inevitably lead to a significant rise in the water level, and the village of Arida will be the first to be flooded, as will all the fields and lands along the river's course in Arida, Samakia and Hakr al-Dahri. These vast areas will be transformed into a huge lake," they lamented. The residents called on the relevant authorities, especially the Public Works and Transport Ministry, to urgently find solutions in order to protect the lives and property of the people living in the villages on the Lebanese bank of the al-Kabir River, warning of escalation if this is not done.

KKR to modernise Malaysia's infrastructure under 13MP for urban and rural areas

KUALA LUMPUR: The Public Works Ministry (KKR) will integrate cutting-edge technology into strategic infrastructure projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (MP13), focusing on road networks, highways, bridges, and public facilities. In a statement today, KKR emphasised that MP13 is not just about physical development but also aims to uplift living standards for all Malaysians, ensuring equitable progress across urban and rural regions. 'KKR is committed to realising the MADANI government's vision for the people. We will enhance service delivery to ensure high-quality, sustainable, and safe infrastructure,' the ministry stated. As the national construction sector leader, KKR will expand the use of modern methods like Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the Industrialised Building System (IBS) to improve efficiency, quality, and reduce foreign labour dependency. Digitalisation efforts will also be prioritised through initiatives such as MyJalan, the Highway Network Development Plan, and the Road Accident Management System to optimise planning and maintenance. The ministry highlighted that these measures aim to deliver cost-efficient infrastructure by minimising project delays, which could otherwise increase national spending and defer public benefits. MP13, tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, includes key projects like the Rantau Panjang–Sungai Golok bridge upgrade (Malaysia-Thailand link) and the Kalabakan–Simanggaris road (Malaysia-Indonesia connection). Other major developments include the Central Spine Road (Bentong to Kuala Krai), the Pan Borneo Highway completion in Sabah and Sarawak, and the Sarawak–Sabah Link Road. The Prime Minister also announced upgrades for major highways and 2,800 km of rural roads by 2030. 'MP13 is not just about infrastructure—it's about rebuilding hope and public trust in Malaysia's future,' KKR affirmed. - Bernama

Sabah-Kalimantan cross-border road project underway

Shahelmey (left) speaking with Tandek assemblyman Datuk Hendrus Anding at the State Assembly. KOTA KINABALU (July 7): A road project connecting Sabah to neighbouring Kalimantan, Indonesia, has entered its initial phase, said State Works Minister Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya. Shahelmey said one proposed alignment involves constructing a new 28-kilometre road from Kalabakan to the Malaysia-Indonesia border at Simanggaris. This includes a 20-kilometre spur road linking Kampung Serudong Laut to Jalan Sapulut-Kalabakan. He said the federal government, through the Public Works Ministry, has approved the project's preliminary study and design under Rolling Plan 3 of the 12th Malaysia Plan (RP3, RMK-12). 'The current status of this project is that field work such as land surveying, utility mapping, and land investigations are actively being carried out to provide data and information for completing the study and design aspects,' he told the State Assembly today. He was responding to Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, who had asked for updates on the proposed road alignments connecting Sabah to Kalimantan. Shahelmey also revealed another proposed road project to connect Pagalungan town to the Bantul border town in Pensiangan. 'This project has also been approved under RP3, RMK-12, as part of the Rural Road Programme (JALB). Funded by the federal government through the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW), it is currently in the procurement process,' he said.
