James Gunn reveals Superman secrets, teases Supergirl and DCU future

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios and director of Superman (2025), opened up in a spoiler-heavy interview about the film's themes, character decisions, and what's next for the DC Universe (DCU). Speaking to Rolling Stone, Gunn emphasized that Superman is rooted in kindness, compassion, and identity — rather than traditional notions of destiny and hope. 'I wanted a Superman who could be beaten,' Gunn explained, highlighting Kal-El's vulnerability as a strength. The now-viral 'punk rock' line was present in the early drafts and ties to Iggy Pop's 'Punkrocker,' which Gunn discovered via Spotify and used in the ending montage. Gunn confirmed that the Justice Gang's imp villain is not Mr. Mxyzptlk and discussed the fictional band 'Mighty Crabjoys,' which inspired the end-credits song he co-wrote. A cameo poster in Clark Kent's room reflects Lois' understanding of Clark's warmth, a moment Gunn called pivotal. Supergirl, portrayed as a 'rougher' character, will be the focus of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026), written by Ana Nogueira. Gunn confirmed that Krypto the Superdog — now Supergirl's companion — will return, but reassured fans that tonal shifts will occur. Peacemaker Season 2 will explore dimensional conflict, not a direct reset of the DCEU. Meanwhile, Easter eggs in the Hall of Justice hint at long-term plans, though not all characters will appear soon. Gunn dismissed fan hopes of a retcon regarding Jor-El and Lara, saying their portrayal reflects the film's emotional arc. Gunn also hinted at fast-tracking Wonder Woman and acknowledged strong domestic performance, citing global anti-American sentiment as a hurdle abroad. Still, he remains optimistic: 'This is just the seed of the tree we've been watering.'

Who Sings 'Punkrocker?' That 'Superman' Ending Song, Explained

In one early scene in Superman, Clark Kent (David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) argue about what makes a person truly punk rock. Is it liking the right bands, or is it doing something that nobody else will dare to do? Clark asserts that he is actually punk rock because caring and being a good person are punk rock qualities. And so, at the end of the movie, Superman revels in his goofy niceness as the 2006 song "Punkrocker" plays over the end credits. If you missed this song, it comes from the Swedish band Teddybears, who are an electronic post-punk band that has been making music since 1991. The version of "Punkrocker" that plays at the end of Superman is actually Teddybears' second version of the song and features true punk legend Iggy Pop on lead first version of the song was on the Teddybears 2000 album Rock'n'Roll Highschool. But the 2006 version, which they re-recorded with Pop's vocal track, is on their better-known album, Soft Machine. Not truly a punk song at all, the dancey, upbeat "Punkrocker" is one of those great anthems that often appeared on mix CDs in the mid-aughts. If David Corenswet's Superman is meant to represent a younger version of the character, then, in a sense, "Punkrocker" is a throwback track. It's also a song that perfectly suits director James Gunn's style, and will stay in your head for weeks. View the to see embedded media. Who Sings 'Punkrocker?' ‘70s Rock Star, 78, Brings Fans Joy at the End of New ‘Superman' Movie

'70s Rock Star, 78, Brings Fans Joy at the End of New 'Superman' Movie originally appeared on Parade. Moviegoers who watched the new Superman movie may have heard a familiar tune from Iggy Pop during the final scene of the film. Iggy's voice projected through the stereo as his 2006 song with Teddybears, 'Punkrocker,' played as Clark Kent, portrayed by actor David Corenswet, adjusted to his new reality. 'You see me drivin' down the street, I'm just not looking good / I got both hands off the wheel, I got you runnin' / I'm listening to music you can't hear, I got pretty music in my ear,' Iggy, 78, whose real name is James Newell Osterberg Jr., sang. The Teddybears debuted 'Punkrocker' in 2000 on their album Rock'n'Roll Highschool. The group re-released the song with Iggy six years later, which was featured on their album Soft Machine. 'Punkrocker' re-gained popularity amongst fans after they watched Superman. Some people ran to their mobile devices to find the music video on YouTube, and thanked the film's director and writer, James Gunn, for incorporating it in the remake of the DC film. 'Love it, thanks James Gunn, great ending song for Superman,' one fan wrote, as a second added, 'I'm here because of James Gunn's Superman. Unorthodox choice but I love that they used this song to close the movie.' Meanwhile, Iggy received his flowers from die-hard fans. 'IGGY POP has a musical career that spans 5+ decades. He is a national treasure,' a separate person wrote. Teddybears' bandmate Joakim Åhlund previously gushed that collaborating with Iggy on the song was a career high. 'Iggy Pop … it's pretty heavy. All those people are our heroes … we never would've dared to dream. It's all pretty amazing for us that we got the opportunity to work with such cool artists,' he said during an interview with Ion Magazine. 'But for me personally, I don't mean any disrespect to any of the others, but Iggy Pop … that's a proud moment for me.' 🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 '70s Rock Star, 78, Brings Fans Joy at the End of New 'Superman' Movie first appeared on Parade on Jul 9, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 9, 2025, where it first appeared.
