Kremlin declines to predict when Putin and Trump may meet face-to-face

ST PETERSBURG, Russia, June 20 (Reuters) - The Kremlin said on Friday it could not predict whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would meet U.S. President Donald Trump this year given how turbulent the world had become. The Kremlin has repeatedly said that Putin is open to an in-person meeting with Trump, but that the process of setting one up is complex and first requires lengthy preparation at expert level. Trump and Putin have held five phone calls this year, most recently on Saturday, according to public statements from the two sides. When asked about the probability of the two leaders meeting face-to-face sometime this year, Peskov told reporters: "I wouldn't venture to make such predictions." "We live in such a turbulent world that it is impossible to make forecasts even for next week," he said, in an apparent reference to the Israel-Iran conflict. After returning to the White House in January, Trump initially took a softer stance towards Moscow, but in recent months he has grown increasingly frustrated that his push to bring about an end to the war in Ukraine has thus far yielded scant results. Russia said on Monday that the United States had cancelled the next round of bilateral talks on removing "irritants" between the two countries. Peskov said on Friday that Moscow was in constant dialogue with the U.S. about a possible peace settlement for Ukraine, but that a separate track of talks on trying to repair bilateral ties was complex because so many problems had accumulated over the years. He said that U.S. diplomats wanted to link the two sets of negotiations, but that Moscow believed removing "irritants' in bilateral ties would help efforts to make progress on Ukraine. "We hope that in the foreseeable future we will reach agreement on new dates (for a new round of talks on bilateral issues)," said Peskov.

Trump Says Nothing to Happen on Ukraine Until He Meets Putin

US President Donald Trump said there'll be no resolution of Russia's war in Ukraine until he meets with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, as a delegation from Kyiv set off to Istanbul for potential ceasefire talks with Moscow counterparts. 'Nothing's going to happen until Putin and I get together,' Trump told reporters Thursday on board Air Force One as he traveled to the United Arab Emirates. 'And obviously he wasn't going to go. He was going to go, but he thought I was going to go. He wasn't going if I wasn't there.'

Kremlin says a Putin–Trump meeting is essential but needs advance preparation

The Kremlin said on Friday that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump was essential but required considerable advance preparation and had to yield results. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was commenting after Trump said he would meet Putin 'as soon as we can set it up.' '…Such a meeting is certainly necessary. It is necessary both primarily from the point of view of bilateral Russian–US relations and from the point of view of having a serious conversation at the highest level about international affairs and on regional problems, including, of course, about the crisis over Ukraine,' Peskov said. Russian and Ukrainian negotiators were in Istanbul on Friday for what was billed as their first direct peace talks in more than three years, under pressure from US President Donald Trump to end Europe's deadliest conflict since World War Two. Commenting on the Istanbul talks, Peskov said that the Russian negotiating team was in constant communication with Moscow and that President Putin was receiving real-time updates.

Ukraine talks won't progress unless ‘Putin and I get together'

US President Donald Trump has said that only a personal meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will lead to progress in resolving the Ukraine conflict. Delegations from Moscow and Kiev were expected to meet in Istanbul on May 15, following Putin's proposal last week to resume direct dialogue aimed at a lasting settlement. The Kremlin team waited for Kiev's representatives to arrive beginning on Thursday morning. Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky announced later in the day that he was sending a delegation led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. The talks have reportedly been pushed back to Friday. Trump, who earlier urged Kiev to accept Putin's proposal 'immediately,' told reporters on Thursday, 'Nothing's going to happen until Putin and I get together.' Speaking aboard Air Force One en route to the UAE, Trump suggested Putin had not planned to travel to Türkiye because Trump himself had not publicly committed to attending. 'He wasn't going if I wasn't there,' Trump said. 'But we're going to have to get this off, because too many people are dying.' Earlier this week, the US president floated the idea of joining the Istanbul talks but later downplayed the possibility, citing a full schedule. On Thursday morning, he told journalists, 'If something happened, I'd go on Friday if it was appropriate.' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there were no preparations underway for a meeting between the Russian and US leaders in the near future. The Kremlin has announced that Putin has no plans to travel to Türkiye.
