In its first meeting since Operation Sindoor, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved a series of 10 capital acquisition proposals under the 'Acceptance of Necessity' (AoN) route, the first step in the defence procurement process. The duration of the procurement varies from case-to-case basis. The clearances cover the tri-services with a focus on enhancing mobility, firepower, logistics and maritime security. New Delhi: Projects worth Rs 1.05 lakh crore for a wide array of military systems, including quick-range surface-to-air missiles (QRSAM), mine countermeasure vessels (MCMVs), electronic warfare (EW) systems, armoured recovery vehicles, naval moored mines and a tri-services logistics platforms were cleared by the defence ministry on Thursday. Sources said the surface-to-air missiles are the indigenously developed QRSAM (Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile) systems by DRDO, with the Army Air Defence (AAD) set to receive systems worth over Rs 30,000 crore. 'With an operational range of around 30 kilometres, the system is capable of detecting, tracking and engaging targets even while in motion and is capable of launching missiles during brief stops. This mobility allows it to provide air defence cover to advancing military units without the need for long setup times,' explained sources. The Navy received a significant portion of the approvals, including Mine Countermeasure Vessels (MCMVs) which are specialised ships designed to detect and neutralise sea mines, ensuring safe navigation for both military and commercial vessels. To further counter such threats, moored mines, which sources described as underwater explosives anchored to the seabed to block enemy access to critical maritime areas, were also cleared. DRDO has developed a Processor Based Moored Mine (PBMM) which is capable of detecting and destroying surface and sub-surface threats by the acoustic/pressure influence anomaly generated by targets passing in proximity. Also cleared by the ministry was the Super Rapid Gun Mount, a naval artillery system that can target both aerial and surface threats, and Submersible Autonomous Vessels—unmanned platforms that conduct undersea surveillance, mine detection, and anti-submarine operations with minimal risk to personnel. For the Army, the DAC also approved Armoured Recovery Vehicles used to tow and repair damaged tanks and heavy vehicles in the field, vital for maintaining mobility in combat zones. New Electronic Warfare systems were also cleared, which will help the Armed Forces detect, disrupt and shield against hostile communications and radar, a key advantage in contemporary high-tech warfare. A major tri-services system cleared under this package is the Integrated Common Inventory Management System (ICIMS), a unified logistics platform aimed at streamlining the storage and movement of critical supplies across the Army, Navy and Air Force. The system is expected to cut redundancy and improve supply chain efficiency. The ministry in its statement clearly said that these systems were approved under 'Buy' (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured), a category under the Defence Acquisition Procedure that prioritises the acquisition of defence equipment designed, developed and produced within India. Defence Ministry set to clear major acquisitions post Operation Sindoor
In its first meeting since the launch of Operation Sindoor, the Ministry of Defence is expected to clear a series of key acquisition projects aimed at bolstering the operational capabilities of the armed forces, including procurement of spy aircraft, air defence missile systems, sea mines, and autonomous underwater platforms. A senior Defence official confirmed on Monday (June 30, 2025) that a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) is scheduled to take place this week, marking the first convening of the body following the high-profile military operation. Among the major items on the agenda is a proposal for enhancing India's air defence network along the Pakistan border. The Council is expected to approve the procurement of three regiments of the indigenously developed Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile systems for the Indian Army. The system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will be produced by defence public sector undertakings. The Indian Air Force is likely to seek clearance for the acquisition of three airborne platforms under the Intelligence, Surveillance, Targeting, and Reconnaissance (I-STAR) programme. 'These aircraft will play a crucial role in future operations aimed at targeting ground-based threats,' the official said. The platforms will be sourced from an original equipment manufacturer and modified indigenously by the DRDO's Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS), in collaboration with private industry partners. The Indian Navy, meanwhile, is set to field a proposal for the induction of pressure-based moored mines developed by the DRDO. These sea mines are designed to target enemy submarines and surface vessels. The long-pending project for upgrading 84 Su-30MKI fighter aircraft is also expected to be discussed at the meeting. The project has already received preliminary clearance from the DAC. Additionally, a proposal for the procurement of underwater autonomous vessels is scheduled to be taken up for approval. The vessels are expected to augment the Navy's surveillance and underwater combat capabilities. The meeting is being closely watched as it marks a potential turning point in the armed forces' post-Operation Sindoor modernisation push.

The Defence Acquisition Council is expected to take up the proposal by late June. Developed by BDL and BEL in accordance with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) is a highly mobile air defence system capable of tracking and engaging targets while on the move or during short halts. With a range of approximately 30 km, it will complement existing systems like Akash and Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) for short to medium-range threats. Defence companies continued to benefit from the government's push on the indigenization while the geopolitical events during the quarter led to Emergency Procurement from government which will lead to additional orders for the defence companies. In terms of aggregate order backlog of PSUs, ₹3.6 trillion crore worth of contracts are in place (4.5x FY25 revenues), giving healthy growth visibility. The order outlook here onwards remains strong as ICICI Securities believe the sector is expected to thrive in the coming years due to faster acquisition processes, greater indigenization, and advanced indigenous systems. Defense exports hit a record ₹23,600 crore in FY25, with strong traction in Europe amid rising budgets. Indian firms are scaling in next-gen domains like AI, drones, & cyber defense, enhancing long-term growth visibility. Despite near-term execution risks, structural tailwinds-indigenization, policy push, & global demand remain intact.
