Meet GAZAP and NEB-2: Two deadly bombs developed by Turkey, weight is 970 kg, can be dropped from..., India has to...
New Delhi: Turkey has successfully tested its most powerful non-nuclear bombs GAZAP and NEB-2 Ghost. Turkey released a video of the tests of these bombs on July 26-27 during the 17th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025 fair held in Istanbul. Why are these bombs so dangerous? Both bombs weigh 970 kg (about 2,000 pounds). They have been designed by the Research and Development (R&D) Center of the Ministry of Defense of Turkey. GAZAP is equipped with a thermobaric warhead. These bombs can be dropped from F-16 fighter jets. The footage shows that this bomb can affect an area of hundreds of square meters. It contains 10 thousand special particles, which spread at a rate of 10.6 particles per square meter after the explosion. The Turkish Defense Ministry said that all the tests of both the bombs have been completed and now it is ready for use. What is Turkey's military development and preparation for? Turkey has rapidly developed its military technology in recent decades. Now it is moving towards self-reliance in the defense sector. The goal of Turkey's defense policy is to reduce dependence on foreign investors and promote indigenous products. For this, Turkey has taken big steps in technology like missiles, armoured vehicles, naval ships and aircraft. Turkey has many missiles, including Tayfun, Siper, Sapan. Tayfun Block-4 is Turkey's first hypersonic ballistic missile, with a range of 800 km and speed more than Mach 5. It weighs 2,300 kilometers and is 6.5 meters long. What will be the impact on India with this test of Turkey? The relationship between India and Turkey has been complex and multifaceted from historical, cultural and diplomatic perspectives. Although there is trade and cultural exchange between the two countries, there has also been tension due to some issues, especially Turkey's support to Pakistan and its stance on Kashmir. Turkiye and Pakistan have strong military and diplomatic relations and Turkiye has previously supplied many weapons to Pakistan including Bayraktar TB2 drones, MİLGEM corvette warships. PNS Babur is a current example of this. If Turkiye shares or exports these bombs (GAZAP and NEB-2) with Pakistan, it can enhance Pakistan's military capability.

Sankar Vilas flyover in Guntur set for demolition on July 20
Guntur: Decks have been cleared for bulldozing of the Sankar Vilas flyover in Guntur city as the district administration directed the police and civic authorities to take immediate alternative measures to divert the traffic. The old flyover will be razed down to construct a new one. The traffic on the flyover will be stopped from next Wednesday. The R&B department, the nodal agency to construct the new flyover, has decided to start bulldozing of the existing flyover from July 20 and asked the line departments to take adequate measures to handle the vehicular movement through alternative routes. Taking the R&B department's decisions into consideration, district collector Nagalakshmi asked the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) and city traffic police to stop vehicular movement on Sankar vilas flyover route from July 16 itself. In fact, a year has passed since the Centre sanctioned 98 crore to take up the new Road over Bridge (RoB) by replacing the 65-year-old flyover near Sankar vilas junction. The district administration took more than 10 months to complete the spade work before the launch of the construction. Surprisingly, the govt has not completely cleared the compensation to the building owners who will be losing their precious properties on the main road of brodipet. GMC authorities have been asked to ensure that key alternative roads-three bridges junction and Pattabhipuram road under bridge (RUB) were not flooded during the monsoon season. The GMC has geared up with diesel motors and operators to handle the emergencies to pump out the water. Similarly, the potholes on all the exit and entry routes have been taken up on war footing basis to allow the free flow of traffic during the construction of the new flyover. The traffic DSP Ramesh made a whirlwind visit of the city and initiated measures to remove the bottlenecks. The vehicle parking slot near APSRTC bus stand and auto parking area have been evacuated to prevent the traffic jam. Similarly, the traffic diversions were initiated near Donka Road, kuglar hospital road, Chuttugunta junction and GMC office. The vehicle parking area has been removed at Lalapet police station and street vendors were also removed from the vegetable market area. Traffic police decided to deploy additional teams near key junctions to clear the traffic jams after diversion of the traffic. "We will suggest the educational institutions in and around the city which operated buses via Pattabhipuram flyover to change the opening and closing times by 30 minutes to 45 minutes to reduce the traffic jam," said a senior police official. More than 200 schools and colleges operate buses through the city roads. GFX Sankar vilas flyover is key link between the trade zone of Guntur one town residential areas of two town The flyover handles movement of more than 1 lakh vehicles per day Diversion of such huge traffic through limited alternative routes is a big challenge for the GMC and city police The construction of new flyover is expected to take at least three years Centre granted Rs.98 crore for taking up the four-lane RoB

Negligence in R&B works exposed in Devanakonda
Devanakonda: The bridge connecting Alarudinne and Valigonda villages in Devanakonda mandal of Kurnool district has once again turned perilous for commuters, as large potholes have reappeared on its surface—barely six months after the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department undertook repair works. This bridge, situated on the crucial Kurnool-Ballari main road, spans across the Handri river and plays a vital role in inter-state transport between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Constructed in 1940 during the British era at an estimated cost of Rs 1.2 lakh, the structure was originally designed to withstand vehicular loads up to 40 tonnes. An indicatordisplaying the load limit still stands as a relic of its historic significance. For the past 85 years, this bridge has served as a lifeline for transportation, facilitating uninterrupted movement of goods and passengers. However, time and lack of proper maintenance seem to be taking a toll on the ageing structure. In a recent attempt to address safety concerns, the R&B department had spent Rs 2 lakh to fill the major potholes using hydraulic powder-based materials. While this repair temporarily halted vehicular movement for a month, the relief was short-lived. Within just six months, the same craters have reappeared, subjecting daily commuters to severe inconvenience and raising alarming safety concerns. Adding to the danger, the protective sidewalls of the bridge have also sustained significant damage, increasing the risk of accidents. According to local estimates, over 400 vehicles, includingpassenger and goods carriers, use this bridge every day. Locals express deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the bridge and the potential for tragic incidents. 'We're constantly worried—each time we cross the bridge, we wonder if an accident is just waiting to happen,' said a frequent traveler. The resurfacing of potholes so soon after repair clearly indicates substandard work and lack of accountability. Citizens urge the government and the R&B department to take immediate and permanent measures—not only to ensure the bridge's safety but also to consider the long-overdue construction of a new bridge to support the growing vehicular load. The crumbling bridge has become a symbol of administrative negligence, and unless urgent steps are taken, it may soon lead to a catastrophe that could havebeen prevented.

IIT Kanpur: India's new hub for advanced drone technology in modern warfare
IIT Kanpur has emerged as a hub for drone technology, developing and testing various types of drones for the Indian armed forces. The campus houses a 60-year-old airstrip, now a flight lab, where drones are tested before being supplied to the army. The institute is working on kamikaze drones, high-altitude drones capable of operating in strong winds, and heavy-lifting drones for logistics. IIT Kanpur's R&D Institute is in regular contact with different army commands to understand and meet their specific requirements.
