Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah opens Lalbagh Flower Show, takes swipe at BJP

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday inaugurated Lalbagh Flower Show 2025 in Bengaluru. Siddaramaiah said the event is a tribute to Kittur Rani Channamma and Sangolli Rayanna, who fought bravely against British rule. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah accused R Ashok of playing "drama" when in power and being a "chameleon" when in opposition.(PTI) He also announced that 110 acres of land will be set aside at the place where Rayanna was hanged. Speaking to the reporters, Siddaramaiah said, "This is a program to pay tribute to Kittur Queen Channamma and Rayanna... Channamma fought two wars against the British; she won the first war and was captured in the second. All castes were in Channamma's army... Rayanna - Channamma's right hand, fought bravely and was sentenced to death in court in 1931... We are authorising 110 acres of land at the place where Rayanna was hanged..." "When in power, a facade of drama; when in opposition, chameleon's drama..! When in power, a mask of composure; when in opposition, a rage..! R Ashok, this description is a mirror of your self-deceptive personality," Siddaramaiah said in a statement. He reminded Ashok of a 15-day transport strike during the BJP's rule, when Ashok was Transport Minister, and alleged that Ashok showed incompetence by sitting with folded hands. "Weren't you the Transport Minister when the transport employees first went on strike for salary revision? For the first time in the history of transport organisations, you sat with folded hands and demonstrated your incompetence," he charged. Bengaluru stampede: Leader of Opposition R Ashok demands emergency assembly session

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 15 (ANI): Karnataka Leader of Opposition (LoP) R Ashok has urged the state government to convene an emergency session of the legislature to discuss the stampede tragedy at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. In a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Ashok highlighted that the incident has raised serious questions about public safety, crowd control, and the organisation of sports and other events. The tragedy has caused anxiety and concern among the public and alleged that lapses in administration, the government's actions post-incident, and attempts to shield influential individuals have led to widespread doubts, said a statement. Ashok claimed that three separate investigations are being conducted to conceal the truth, and helpless officials are being scapegoated, as per public discussions. He emphasised the need for a comprehensive discussion on measures to prevent such incidents in the future, proposing a three-day emergency session. The session should address a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the stampede, strengthening crowd control and safety measures at public events, ensuring proper treatment for the injured, providing compensation to affected families, and outlining the state government's plans to avoid such incidents in the future. Ashok stated that the emergency session would demonstrate the state government's commitment to the public and help implement appropriate measures based on lessons learned from the tragedy. He also urged the government to disclose the causes of the incident to the public and take legal action against those responsible. Eleven people died and more than 30 were injured in a stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy stadium as a huge crowd of nearly 3 lakh people had gathered to witness the victory celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru for winning the Indian Premier League (IPL). Following the incident, the Karnataka government on June 5 suspended top police officials at the Cubbon Park Police Station and formed a one-man commission under a retired High Court Judge to probe the incident. Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka Assembly LoP accuses Congress Govt of ignoring police instructions

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 8 (ANI): Karnataka Assembly Leader of Opposition (LoP) R Ashok on Sunday accused the Congress government in the State of disregarding police instructions, leading to the stampede tragedy outside Chinnaswamy Stadium during the RCB cricket team's IPL victory celebrations, which claimed 11 lives. Addressing a press conference, Ashok alleged that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar were more focused on their political power struggle than ensuring public safety. 'Had they acted responsibly, innocent students would not have lost their lives,' he said. Ashok claimed that the police had informed the government about the first fatality by noon, yet the RCB event continued despite eight children already being dead. 'These leaders have hearts of stone,' he charged. Ashok alleged that the Vidhana Soudha police had written to the Chief Secretary on June 4, warning that the event was hastily organised and security arrangements were inadequate due to staff shortages. The police had even recommended cancelling the event. 'While the Speaker suspended 18 BJP MLAs citing rule violations, the government itself has broken the law,' Ashok said. Ashok also criticised the Chief Minister for claiming the event was not a government program despite official orders stating otherwise. Ashok expressed outrage over the suspension of police officers managing traffic and station duties, while no action was taken against government officials. He demanded a special legislative session to discuss the stampede and called for a High Court-monitored probe. 'Three inquiries have been ordered, but which one is genuine?' he questioned. Asserting that the government should own up to its failures, Ashok said, 'If they are not guilty, they must provide Rs1 crore compensation to each victim's family.' He also announced that BJP legislators would donate one month's salary to the affected families. Taking a dig at the Chief Minister, Ashok said, 'Winning trophies is not new, but no other state has seen such negligence for publicity.' The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with opposition parties and civil society demanding accountability from the government. (ANI)

‘Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar are the main culprits': BJP protests at Vidhana Soudha over Bengaluru stampede tragedy

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday staged a protest at the steps of Bengaluru's Vidhana Soudha, condemning the Congress-led Karnataka government over the recent stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations. Holding the state's top leadership directly responsible for the tragedy, the BJP demanded the resignations of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and Home Minister G Parameshwara. 'The real culprits are the Chief Minister, the Deputy CM, and the Home Minister. All three should resign. This is the demand of the entire state,' said Prabhu Bhamla Chavan while addressing the media. He further alleged that the suspended police officers were being made scapegoats. 'They are being sacrificed to shield the ministers. We say—don't offer compensation. Instead, take moral responsibility and resign,' he added. The event was organised in haste and without proper planning, resulting in the loss of 11 innocent lives. Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar must step down,' Ashok said. He also demanded that the compensation for each deceased person be raised to ₹1 crore. The BJP's protest comes days after a stampede occurred outside the stadium on June 4, where tens of thousands of fans gathered to witness the felicitation ceremony of RCB players after their IPL 2025 win. The crowd swell and lack of crowd control reportedly led to chaos, leaving 11 people dead and over 50 injured.
