Bengaluru stampede: Leader of Opposition R Ashok demands emergency assembly session
In a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Ashok highlighted that the incident has raised serious questions about public safety, crowd control, and the organisation of sports and other events.
The tragedy has caused anxiety and concern among the public and alleged that lapses in administration, the government's actions post-incident, and attempts to shield influential individuals have led to widespread doubts, said a statement.
Ashok claimed that three separate investigations are being conducted to conceal the truth, and helpless officials are being scapegoated, as per public discussions.
He emphasised the need for a comprehensive discussion on measures to prevent such incidents in the future, proposing a three-day emergency session.
The session should address a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the stampede, strengthening crowd control and safety measures at public events, ensuring proper treatment for the injured, providing compensation to affected families, and outlining the state government's plans to avoid such incidents in the future.
Ashok stated that the emergency session would demonstrate the state government's commitment to the public and help implement appropriate measures based on lessons learned from the tragedy. He also urged the government to disclose the causes of the incident to the public and take legal action against those responsible.
Eleven people died and more than 30 were injured in a stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy stadium as a huge crowd of nearly 3 lakh people had gathered to witness the victory celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru for winning the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Following the incident, the Karnataka government on June 5 suspended top police officials at the Cubbon Park Police Station and formed a one-man commission under a retired High Court Judge to probe the incident. (ANI)

Meghalaya Assembly autumn session from Sep 8-12
Shillong, Aug 13 (PTI) The autumn session of Meghalaya Assembly will be held from September 8-12, Speaker Thomas A Sangma said on Wednesday. He made the announcement after chairing a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the assembly. The five-day session will have three days reserved for government business and two days for private members' business, Sangma told reporters. The BAC meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prestone Tynsong, Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma, who joined via video conference from Tura, and senior assembly officials. 'Last year, the session began on a Friday and extended to the following Friday due to the Janmashtami holiday. This year, as there is less government business, especially fewer supplementary demands and demands for grants, the committee agreed to a five-day session from Monday to Friday," the Speaker said. Asked if the Opposition was satisfied with the schedule, Sangma said all members agreed unanimously, with no objections raised. The BJP's counterattack comes days after Gandhi made a detailed presentation at a press conference here where he talked about alleged 'vote theft' with examples. He specifically mentioned that in the Mahadevpura seat of Karnataka, 80 voters purportedly resided at the same address. It accused the Opposition of propagating 'falsehoods' in a bid to protect their ' ghuspaithiye voters'. New Delhi: Seeking to turn the table on the Opposition over its 'vote chori ' campaign and criticism of the Special Intensive Revision, the BJP Wednesday came out with many alleged discrepancies in voter lists in the constituencies represented by Rahul Gandhi, Abhishek Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav among others. BJP MP Anurag Thakur said both Rahul and Sonia Gandhi turned a blind eye to the same voters being registered in multiple booths in Rae Bareli, the Gandhi family pocket borough. Thakur said Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar is aimed at protecting voting rights. Addressing a press conference here, he said the Congress knows it is losing the upcoming Bihar assembly elections, and therefore, it is engaging in mudslinging along with other Opposition parties. 'Rahulji and Soniaji never saw how 45 people have been registered in a house in Rae Bareli. Mohammad Kaif Khan's name is registered at booth number 83, 151, 218 in the Rae Bareli Constituency,' Thakur alleged. He further said 47 voter IDs are registered in House number 189 of booth number 131 in the Rae Bareli constituency. Mohammad Islam, Mohammad Qasim, Shakeel Ansari and Shabnam are among them, he said. 'Rahulji never saw this name, Sonia ji never saw this name. How did 47 IDs belong to the same address? Rahulji must have been asking for votes there for many years,' he said, accusing the Congress of indulging in appeasement politics. 'If there is a record of losing 90 elections under someone's leadership, it is under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. Even within the party, questions are raised about Rahul Gandhi's leadership. 'Yesterday some Congress people were saying that Rahul Gandhi and the opposition leaders created a storm (bawandar)… It's not a storm, it's a blunder… I will say the same thing to Rahulji—dust was on your face, and you kept cleaning the mirror,' he added, Coming down heavily on the TMC, Thakur claimed the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency saw more than 15 per cent increase in voter strength in four years, and was mostly won by the TMC. He said an analysis of five Lok Sabha and one assembly constituencies—Wayanad (Priyanka Gandhi), Rae Bareli (Rahul Gandhi), Diamond Harbour (Abhishek Banerjee), Kannauj (Akhilesh Yadav), Mainpuri (Dimple Yadav) and Kolathur (assembly seat represented by M.K Stalin)—has exposed the 'ghuspaithiya' vote bank pattern. 'The Opposition is using ghuspaithiye vote bank for political survival while compromising on national security,' he claimed. Thakur said that after being defeated in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi, Rahul Gandhi shifted to Kerala's Wayanad to win elections with votes from a single community. 'Both the LDF and UDF have fuelled Islamic radicalisation in Kerala, and now, as the BJP challenges them, they are resorting to allegations of voter fraud on BJP victory,' he said. Citing an example from Kannauj, he said 16,163 duplicate voters have been found in Kannauj and 1,53,919 voters with fake addresses.
