Cardinals' Arenado Asks to be Moved Down in Lineup

Having won 12 of their last 14 games, the Cardinals are one of the hottest teams in baseball. While just about everything seems to be going right for the Redbirds, it's been a rough last week or so for eight-time All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado. In his last seven games, Arenado is slashing just .172/.194/.310. He's now hitting .247 on the year, with four homers and 18 RBIs. Advertisement Arenado has been the cleanup hitter for the Cardinals in every game he's played in this season, but that won't be the case for tonight's game against the Tigers. Amid his struggles at the plate and with other guys in the order being red-hot while hitting behind him, Arenado went to manager Oli Marmol, asking to be moved down in the order. Cardinals third baseman Nolan ArenadoPeter Aiken-Imagn Images "Guys are playing well in front of me, or that were hitting behind me, and they should move up in front of me," Arenado said about the lineup change. "It was really nothing more than that. I don't think it's pressure. It's just performance." The guys Arenado is referring to are Willson Contreras and Iván Herrera. Contreras, who is slashing .315/.397/.556 with three homers in his last 15 games, will now assume the role of cleanup hitter. Herrera will move up to the the five-spot, while Arenado will drop to sixth. Advertisement Herrera hasn't missed a beat since returning from the IL. He's slashing an incredible .500/.571/.750 in his last seven games. The Cardinals' offense will look to get things going again after scoring just one run in each of the final two games against the Royals. The Cardinals begin a three-game series with the Tigers tonight in St. Louis. Related: Cardinals Lead MLB in Ever Important Category Related: Cardinals vs Tigers: How to Watch and What to Watch for

Redbirds hoping early returns to lead to success next season

NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — The Illinois State men's basketball may be excited for summer school this year. June is when members of the team will return to campus to begin getting ready for next season. And when the guys come back to campus and start summer workouts, they are going to see a lot of familiar faces. 'You have to have a great offseason, put together a roster full of guys that are here for the right reasons, that want to be Redbirds and want to play for one another,' said ISU coach Ryan Pedon. This week, Johnny Kinziger, Jack Daugherty, Ty Pence, and Landon Wolf all announced they will return to play for Illinois State. And grad student Brandon Lieb, a 7-foot center who suffered a hand injury and was sidelined all season, said he would play another season in Normal. 'There's some momentum in there that exists, that we have worked very hard for and that we haven't had after year one or year two,' said Pedon, who just finished his third season coaching ISU. 'Hoping we can build on that.' ISU won the College Basketball Invitational last week for the program's first ever postseason tournament title. And now it appears most of the squad is returning, including first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference player Chase Walker, who had a breakout sophomore season this winter. Now the journey to next season is underway. 'Ultimately that journey begins in the middle of June,' Pedon said. 'When we come back for summer school.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. ISU sophomores Kinziger, Pence to return

NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Illinois State's basketball program received good news on Wednesday. Sophomores Johnny Kinziger and Ty Pence are staying home. They both announced they will return to ISU for their junior seasons. 'The chemistry that I have with the guys this year, all these guys are coming back. I really think we can do something special. I want to be part of that,' Kinziger said Wednesday night at halftime of the women's basketball game at CEFCU Arena. The 5-11 guard started all 35 games as was second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.6 points and 3.9 rebounds for ISU. The Redbirds closed the season by winning the College Basketball Invitational title last week. 'I love each and every one of these guys, I mean that. Coach (Ryan Pedon) says it every day, 'You win with people.' I just think the people in this community are the best. That's why I said all along I'm very happy,' Kinziger said. Pence had a big sophomore season after struggling as a sophomore. He averaged 7.4 points and 4.0 points and was named to the CBI all-tournament team. 'This is always the place where I've wanted to be. We have something great building. It really is the whole family aspect here,' said Pence. 'Our seniors talked to the younger guys at the end of the year, they just talked to us and said there really isn't any other place like this.' The Redbirds went 22-14 in Pedon's third season, winning the first postseason title in program history. Sophomore Chase Walker, a first team all-Missouri Valley Conference selection, announced his return last month. Freshman Jack Daughtery announced on Tuesday that he would return for his second year with the program. 'I'm so proud of our players, individually and collectively. They see something they really believe in. They come together and want to stay and be a part of something special,' said Pedon. 'To me, that's the essence of team.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
