Dodgers' Dave Roberts drops 3 word declaration after late-game loss to Cardinals

The post Dodgers' Dave Roberts drops 3 word declaration after late-game loss to Cardinals appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the St Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Wednesday to lose the three-game series. They were winning in the eighth inning, partly thanks to a Shohei Ohtani homer, before a brutal error handed the Redbirds the lead. While there was still time left in the game, they were not able to mount a comeback. When asked about the tough loss, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gave a blunt answer. 'Never feels good. Shohei was really good today,' Roberts said of Ohtani, who was the starting pitcher. 'The pitching, fastball command, fantastic, really impressive. We figured he would come back and really feel the baseball well today, which he did. And then offensively, the walk, the homer, just really looked good.' Then, the Dodgers manager was asked about the play that lost them the game. Cardinals' outfielder roped a single into left-center field that tied the game at three. The throw comes into third base, where Alex Freeland could not tag out the runner. He then tried to throw the ball to Miguel Rojas at second, as Walker was advancing on the throw. The game-winning run scored. 'In that play right there, [centerfielder] Andy [Pages] felt he had a shot there, kept the throw down, and we secured it at third base. I just felt right there that Alex did not make a good throw. So, that's that. And that happens, and he'll learn from it. If he felt like he had a chance at the guy on second base, it's the right play. Just gotta secure the throw.' The Dodgers did not win the game or the series against the Cardinals. They are now 10-17 since July 4, losing a lot of ground to the San Diego Padres in the NL West. This loss brings San Diego within 2.5 games as the summer heats up. 2025 Fantasy Baseball: Top 5 waiver wire pickups for Week 14

The post 2025 Fantasy Baseball: Top 5 waiver wire pickups for Week 14 appeared first on ClutchPoints. The fantasy baseball regular season is more than halfway done. All season long, we've been giving you the best waiver wire pickups for your team, so hopefully you're in a playoff position. But if not, it's not stopping now. Here are the top hitters and pitchers to pick up on your fantasy baseball waiver wire for the first week of July. Advertisement Each of these players is claimed in fewer than half of ESPN fantasy baseball leagues. Whether you are looking for a replacement for an injured player or just trying to improve your team, you can benefit from waivers. Make sure your team is in good shape for the stretch run by grabbing these players from your opponents before they get there. Fantasy baseball waiver wire pickups for Week 14 Geoff Burke-Imagn Images Erick Fedde, Cardinals SP (Rostered: 10.8%) The Cardinals picked up Erick Fedde at the MLB trade deadline last year, but did not make the playoffs. Fedde was not the reason why, with a 3.72 ERA in ten starts. As the Redbirds continue to surprise, Fedde continues to deal. Even after a miserable start against the Cubs, he has a 4.11 ERA. With two starts on the table this week against the Pirates and Cubs, Fedde should be on your fantasy baseball team. Advertisement The Cardinals could sell at the MLB trade deadline if they slip in July. And if they do, Fedde could be on the move again. That could benefit your team if you keep him beyond a solid streaming option this week. If he were on a better offensive team, those wins could shoot up and make him a better fantasy option. Chase Burns, Cincinnati SP (Rostered: 40.2%) The number two overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft made his debut with the Reds on Tuesday against the Yankees. His first time through the order was dominant, with seven strikeouts early. While the Bombers got to him late, there is a lot of promise in his electric right arm. Your fantasy baseball team could use a pitcher like Burnes, especially if you are in a keeper league. Burnes could make two starts this week, with his turn in the rotation coming up on Monday against Boston. The Reds' front office said they called him up because they are looking to win and plan on keeping him up. His high velocity and elite off-speed stuff could make him an asset for Cincy and your team. Advertisement Nick Kurtz, Athletics 1b (Rostered: 19.5%) Another 2024 draft pick, Nick Kurtz, has been raking for the Athletics lately. He has 11 homers in 42 games, along with a solid .255 batting average. If you have a hole at first base, which is possible with some poor performances, Kurtz could be your guy. The Athletics have a lot of young talent on their team and could be building another playoff core for the future. They should be on every fantasy baseball player's radar due to their talent at different positions. Kurtz is that guy at first base, mashing homers at just 22 years old and showing no signs of slowing down. Jackson Holliday, Baltimore 2b (Rostered: 42.2%) The Orioles have been horrendous so far this year, but they have to be pleased with what they are seeing from Jackson Holliday. He was bad when he first came to the majors last year, with a .565 OPS in 60 games. This year, STATS. That production from a poor offensive position is perfect for your fantasy baseball lineup. Advertisement With Adley Rutschman on the injured list and other players struggling, Holliday will remain high in the lineup. That could lead to less advantageous matchups from bullpens and big spots. If he continues his recent hot stretch, that should be no problem. Chandler Simpson, Tampa Bay OF (Rostered: 10.5%) There is no reason for fantasy baseball category players not to pick up Chandler Simpson. He is back with the pro club and should continue his dominance on the basepaths immediately. That gives you a massive advantage in the stolen base category, and he was hitting for average when he went down as well. The Rays have nearly caught up to the Yankees in the AL East, and Simpson could help put them over the edge. Simpson is not going to add much to your home run or RBI categories, but fantasy baseball matchups can be won in any category. He could be a generational base stealer if he can stay with the big club. You should bet on that with your waiver wire pickup this week. Cardinals Farm Report: Jose Fermin Making Case for Call-up

Cardinals Farm Report: Jose Fermin Making Case for Call-up originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The St. Louis Cardinals' farm system is shaping up to be as exciting as any in the game of baseball. Although they don't have a large group of prospects in the top 100, many young players in the organization are flourishing under the new "youth movement" that the Cardinals front office is after. Advertisement Here's a look at the Cardinals' top minor league performers of last week and a storyline to keep an eye on in the near future: Jose Fermin, Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A) Fermin, 26, has bounced back and forth between Memphis and St. Louis in his two-plus season tenure with the organization, but the numbers he's put up this year - and his offensive surge last week - have shown that he's making a case for a ticket back to the bigs. St. Louis Cardinals middle infielder Jose Fermin prepares for batting practice on Feb. 25, 2025. Jonathan Dyer-Imagn Images In five games played last week, the 26-year-old middle infielder went 11-for-20 (.550) with nine RBI, five runs, four doubles, three walks and stolen bases and two home runs. Fermin is currently slashing .310/.432/.487 and leads the team with 20 doubles on the year. Advertisement Nathan Church, Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A) After being promoted to Triple-A earlier this month, Church has stayed hot for the Redbirds. In his last five games, the 24-year-old outfielder hit .429 with six RBI, six runs, three walks, two doubles, triples and home runs - including a grand slam. He's led the team in average (.426), on base (.493), slugging (.656) and OPS (1.149) in the last 30 days despite only being on the team for 21. Joshua Baez, Springfield Cardinals (Double-A) Like Church, Baez has been on fire since being promoted at the start of the month. He continued his dominant stretch at the plate last week with a 7-for-14 performance (.500), racking up 10 RBI, four walks, three runs scored, three home runs and a double. The 21-year-old's 1.764 OPS led all Texas League hitters by a 0.6-plus margin. Advertisement Storyline to keep an eye on moving forward: Despite some early-season injuries and the loss of No. 11 Cooper Hjerpe to Tommy John surgery, some of the Cardinals' minor league pitching prospects have bounced back in a big way as the season marches on. No. 3 prospect Tink Hence made his return from IL for Double-A Springfield on Friday, completing 4 1/3 no-hit innings while striking out eight and walking just one batter. The team's pitching staff went on to toss a combined no-hitter against Houston's Corpus Christi Hooks. No. 2 prospect Quinn Mathews has been dominant on the mound since his return, as well, carrying a 2.30 ERA with 20 strikeouts in four starts since May 31. Iowa baseball lands bullpen arm through transfer portal

Iowa baseball lands bullpen arm through transfer portal As the long and winding offseason continued for Iowa baseball, the Hawkeyes made some moves on Thursday by gaining the commitment of former Illinois State bullpen arm Joe Husak through the transfer portal. While the right-hander had a standout sophomore season with the Redbirds in 2024, posting a 4-2 record and a 2.55 ERA over 42.1 innings, his 2025 campaign saw a bit of a downturn as his ERA landed at 6.11 in 28.0 innings with an 0-2 record. During his 2024 season with Illinois State, Husek was named Honorable Mention to the All-Missouri Valley Conference team and closed out his tenure as the second all-time leader in saves with 14. Before his two seasons at Illinois State, the senior native of Cambridge, Iowa, made a previous stop at South Dakota State in 2022. For Iowa's sake, the addition could be extremely helpful if the Hawkeyes can get the 2024 version of Husek next season as the closer has shown the potential to be consistent and reliable. With the Hawkeyes roster still somewhat in flux, the additions and subtractions to the team will be something to watch as the offseason moves along.
