Western Massachusetts residents prepare for significant winter storm
WESTFIELD, Mass (WWLP) – From what the forecast is showing, this is expected to be the biggest snowstorm we have seen in western Massachusetts all winter. 'Preparation should start now,' said Collin Greenwyn, an assistant store manager at Rocky's in Westfield. 'This storm is coming and it's going to freeze so you're going to definitely want to be prepared and stocked up.' The 22News Storm Team Forecast is showing the winter weather will be starting Saturday evening and residents are already preparing. 'Trying to plan ahead so I don't have to be on the roads I have little ones so the less I can be driving around the better,' said Matthew Santillo. While we just received snow earlier this week, Bonnie Daley and her husband were away on vacation, so they are having to catch up. 'We're clearing the snow from this last snowstorm to get ready for it and out getting groceries,' said Daley. Since they are predicting 6 inches or more for the snowstorm, Rocky's said if you have a snow-blower, make sure you check tonight to ensure it is working properly. 'We actually have a snow blower and like a mini snow thrower that I use my husband uses the big snow so we don't have to shovel,' said Daley. Aside from plowing the snow once it falls, Greenwyn said you can salt before the snow begins. 'You're definitely going to want to get stocked up on your rock salt. You need pet safe if you have pets or calcium chloride if you have a lot of concrete, you don't want to damage your already laid down pavement,' said Greenwyn. 'I'll go to my mom's and my house and pre-salt, sand in the driveway things like that but just typical stuff the main thing is trying not to go out during the snow storm,' said Santillo. All of these preparations ensure that you can enjoy the snow when it begins. 'That they will be for building snowmen and probably going sledding and doing things like that,' said Santillo. As the snow begins to fall, not only are residents going to shovel or plow their driveways and sidewalks, but the Westfield Fire Department also wants to remind residents to clear a wide area around fire hydrants if you have any on your property.
