Netflix adds 'emotionally haunting' biopic with Zac Efron's best performance
One of Zac Efron's most captivating performances is now streaming on Netflix, and it's worlds away from his light-hearted High School Musical days.
The Hollywood heartthrob stars in R-rated sports drama The Iron Claw, alongside the talented Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), Harris Dickinson (Babygirl) and Stanley Simons (Rocky's).
First released in the UK in 2024, the biopic is inspired by the devastating story of the Von Erich brothers, who made history in the 1980s wrestling world.
Efron stars as Kevin, one of the brothers who made waves as a pro-wrestler, with Dickinson portraying David, White playing Kerry and Simons as Mike.
While their sport took great importance in their lives, the Von Erichs were plagued by tragedy outside the ring. The family was struck by a series of tragic deaths, which became known as the 'Von Erich Curse.'
This drama, directed by Sean Durkin, delves into their success as sportsmen as well as their "cursed" personal lives. It currently sits at an 89% Rotten Tomatoes score, with audiences rating it a stellar 94%.
Critics raved about the biopic in their consensus, stating: "Powerfully acted and profoundly sad, The Iron Claw honours its fact-based story with a dramatization whose compassionate exploration of family ties is just as hard-hitting as its action in the wrestling ring."
Viewers have also shared glowing reviews. One fan penned: "It's rare to get such an emotionally powerful movie that's this entertaining and well paced.
"On the surface, it looks like a movie about wrestling but it goes so much deeper in to themes pain/loss, purpose, generational sin, family, and the weight of great expectations. Zac Efron delivers his best performance in this film while surrounded by an amazing cast of supporting actors."
But don't be fooled by these rave reviews, The Iron Claw is not an easy watch.
An IMDb user vouched for its emotional impact, writing: "The Iron Claw is incredible yet devastating. It's an emotionally haunting film that is going to stick with me for a while."
Yet another fan took to Google reviews and praised: "A sombre yet explosive, near flawless piece of cinema that is hands down the best sports drama since 2015's Creed!"
Meanwhile, a third warned: "Be prepared that it's more sad than uplifting, although that shouldn't deter you from watching. It's well done."

Disney fans spot hidden detail in Monsters Inc character's name after 24 years
Disney fans have only just realised what Boo's real human name is 24 years after the movie came out in cinemas - and the character's voice actor shared her experience making the film It was released to cinemas 24 years ago - but some Disney fans have only just clocked a major Easter egg in Monsters Inc. The 2001 animated movie follows best friends Sulley and Mike trying to work their way up the ranks at Monsters Incorporated, an energy company which requires monsters to scare children. However, their lives are hugely disrupted when a human girl wanders into the monster world - simultaneously scaring them while stealing their hearts. In the movie, Sulley names the two-year-old Boo while she nicknames the big blue monster Kitty. However, some fans have only just realised Boo's real name is hidden in a split-second clip within the movie - and the writers put a great deal of thought into it too. In the scene where Boo is sat in bed showing off her drawings to the monsters, you can see her human name written on the top of a piece of paper - Mary. Commenting on this revelation, one user said: "When I was little this movie made me realise that you should always sign your work when you draw and I still do it." Another user added: "We definitely weren't able to read it on the tube TV when this movie came out." It turns out Boo was named after her voice actor Mary Gibbs, who was a toddler at the time of recording. The now 28-year-old's voice was also used in The Lion King II: Simba's Price and Baby Kiara, Monsters University as Girl in cabin, Inside Out as Baby Riley, and The Last Guest as Charlotte. Mary suffered from scoliosis as a teenager before undergoing surgery in 2012 and returning to acting in 2022, voicing Janessa Jensen in Heroes of Extinction. She has also answered fan questions on Reddit and YouTube about her time as Boo in the Disney Pixar movie. When asked how many times she has watched the movie and whether it feels " weird" to hear her toddler self, she said: "Especially when the movie first came out everyone wanted to watch it with me. I've probably seen it a couple hundred times. "Now that I'm older its a little weird knowing that's my voice for sure! It really hit me when I rode the Monsters Inc ride at California Adventures and my voice was all over the ride. "Then again it doesn't really seem like me when I watch it. It's hard to explain the mixed emotions I get when watching the film now." Another user asked: "How did they get you to record the part in Monsters Inc? Sit you down in a booth, or follow you about with a microphone whilst you did 'kid' things? In response, she said: "They would follow me around the recording studio, use puppets to talk to me, and have my mum tickle me or take money/candy away from me to make me laugh and cry ahaha all real emotions."

The Thursday Murder Club creator defends location after fan backlash
The Thursday Murder Club airs on Netflix on August 28 and the film was shot in some stunning locations. The Thursday Murder Club is coming to Netflix soon and the film is an adaptation of Richard Osman's novel of the same name. Following a group of four elderly amateur sleuths, the film boasts a star-studded cast, with the likes of Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren spotted filming in the UK. For Coopers Chase, Englefield House in Berkshire was used and the Grade II listed house was originally built 1558. The cemetery set was inspired by a corner of the famous Highgate Cemetery in North London. The film was shot primarily at Shepperton Studios in July 2024, as well as on location in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. Director Chris Columbus defended the location choice for Cooper's Chase after fans took to the YouTube comments section to express concern following the release of the trailer. Many said they expected the retirement village to have a more "modern" look, however Columbus, known for his work on the Harry Potter films, said he was keen to create a "Hogwarts version" of a retirement community. He said: "Hogwarts was an aspirational place, a place that kids all over the world fantasized about getting a letter from, welcoming them to this school of witchcraft and wizardry. "Coopers Chase was initially conceived by Richard Osman as a place unlike most of the traditional assisted living places we've seen in books and film, places that are unwelcoming, depressing and dreary. "We wanted Coopers Chase to be a sort of wish fulfillment retirement community, somewhere that audiences who saw the movie would say 'I'd love to spend the last 15 to 20 years of my life in a place like this.'" Going into more detail about the visual plan, he explained: "Coopers Chase is vibrant and alive. It's colorful, warm and inviting. "The visual plan of Coopers Chase was based on Richard Osman's description, which included a stately home situated below a church and cemetery. "This design was crucial to the story. Almost magically, on the second day of location scouting, we found Englefield House in Berkshire, a visually stunning manor where the church and cemetery were actually located below the house. "This layout would actually work for the entire film. We could shoot this location, as it was, without the use of any CGI. "I treated Coopers Chase like a character in the film, a character who reaches out from the screen, takes you by the hand and invites you into our world." The Thursday Murder Club airs on Netflix on August 28
