Wet Wednesday as severe storms return
A few showers to the west have not been holding up too well. There could still be some raindrops around over the next few hours. A Flood Warning for Lyon County remains in effect until 5:21am Thursday. Some flooding has been reported near the Cottonwood and Neosho Rivers. Even though not much rain is around early this morning, dense fog may slow you down. A Dense Fog Advisory will be in effect until 10am. Once the Dense Fog Advisory expires there will be an increasing chance for showers and storms. Later in the afternoon is when stronger storms will begin to fire up, especially to the southwest. There is a risk for severe storms later today. All forms of severe weather will be possible. The greatest risk for tornadoes will be to the southwest. Please be weather aware later today and plan on being near a safe, sturdy shelter just in case. Storms will gradually cluster together through the evening. Showers and storms will track through the area through the night. Much of this activity will wrap up by daybreak Thursday but it may not be completely dry. Cloud cover and rain will continue to keep most of our high temperatures below the norm. Highs today will range from the low 60s to the low 80s. Hit or miss showers and storms will be possible through Thursday. Severe weather is not expected tomorrow. Friday will be drier as high pressure builds into the area. Temperatures will start to warm back up at the end of the week too. There is a small chance for a shower or storm Saturday but most of the weekend will be dry. Showers and storms through the holiday weekend
We are starting Friday with some showers and isolated rumbles of thunder. There will be more showers and storms around by mid-morning. Strong to severe storms will be possible as early as this morning. Rainfall will be heavy at times too. The threat of a tornado is low and will mainly be to the west. Some stronger storms, especially between Central and Eastern Kansas could last into the afternoon. Evening storms to the west will need to be monitored closely. There could still be some flare ups farther east too. A Flood Watch will go into effect this evening but only for Chautauqua County. If you live in a low-lying, flood-prone area, please be aware of your surroundings with multiple days of rain on the way. High temperatures today will range from the upper 60s to the 80s. Temperatures through the holiday weekend will be cooler than average. Storm chances will gradually decrease after Saturday. Saturday will be one of those days where if it is not raining where you are, it will likely be raining somewhere else. Be ready to be woken up Saturday night by thunder and heavy rain. There will be another severe risk Saturday too. The threat of a tornado will be to the southeast where there is a Slight Risk. Showers and storms will continue to be around through the day Sunday. A severe risk Sunday will be confined to southern portions of the area. Conditions will not be the best for outdoor activities on Memorial Day. Monday will be cloudy, cool, and damp at times. Looking ahead to weekend storm chances
High temperatures will not be as toasty today but it will still be warm in the 80s and 70s. The temperature change will occur due to a cold front bringing a wind shift. Wind speeds will reach 20 to 25 mph but will not be as gusty as last night. Another front and wind shift moves in tonight. This will spark another chance for rain to the northwest. We will be dry Friday into Saturday but then we will begin to get into an active pattern over the weekend. Some storms over the weekend and into next week could be strong to severe. A small part of the area to the southeast will be under a Marginal Risk for severe weather Saturday. Saturday starts dry and we should stay that way into the afternoon. Late in the afternoon and by the evening storm chances will start to go back up. The chance for strong to severe storms will impact more of the area Sunday. It will be the late afternoon and evening hours again that will need to be monitored. Storms will wind down during the overnight and Monday will start quiet. However, we will need to continue practicing being weather aware with another round of potential strong to severe storms expected late in the day. Evening storms will impact much of the area, especially between Central and Eastern Kansas. Some showers and storms will linger Tuesday but so far, severe weather is not expected. The middle of the week does not look as active. KSN Storm Track 3 Forecast from Meteorologist Ronelle Williams: Wichita:Today: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy, breezy. We are picking up things right where we left off over the weekend. High pressure will keep us dry and sunny. Warmth will continue to start the new week too. High temperatures in the 80s will be widespread. Fire danger will be high today mainly to the north and in Nebraska. Furnas County in Southwest Nebraska will be under a Fire Weather Warning from 11am to 9pm. We will begin to see some highs in the 90s tomorrow in Western Kansas. This unseasonable heat will slide east into Central Kansas by Wednesday. We will lose some of this warmth the latter part of the week but high temperatures will still be near and above average in the 70s and 80s. Not much rain is expected this week.
