J&K Police urge Amarnath pilgrims to travel in convoys for safety

Jammu and Kashmir Police have urged Amarnath Yatra pilgrims to avoid independent travel and join official convoys for safety, days ahead of the annual pilgrimage. In a small advisory on X, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Jammu said, Shri Amarnath Ji yatra pilgrims who wish to start their yatra from Jammu are advised to join only the official convoys for a safe and secure journey. - Avoid independent travel The Amarnath Yatra is scheduled to begin from July 3 and will continue till August 9. The advisory comes around the time when a counter-terror operation is underway in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district. Officials confirmed on Thursday that four Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists are trapped in a forested area in Udhampur district with security forces attempting to neutralise them, PTI reported. The operation was launched following specific intelligence, after which a joint party search was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir in the Bihali area of Basantgarh. The 13th Battalion of the NDRF carried out a drill that included various emergency scenarios, rescue operations, medical assistance, and support for the yatra and its pilgrims, the official said, as quoted by PTI. Moreover, the lodging facilities in the district were also inspected by Udhampur Deputy Commissioner Saloni Rai. 'All arrangements have been put in place. The Udhampur district houses 26 lodgement centres with a capacity to accommodate 6,500 pilgrims. We have established centres to house pilgrims in case of any weather-related or other emergencies,' she said, as quoted by PTI.

(ANI photo)(ANI ) In a small advisory issued hours before an encounter broke out in Udhampur, the IGP Jammu listed two things - avoid independent travel, travel in escorted convoys. The advisory also holds significance in light of recent joint Army-police operation in Udhampur, condenamed Operation Bihali. Security forces were engaged in an encounter with terrorists in the Kuru area of Basantgarh in Udhampur. The 38-day-long yatra to the 3,880-metre-high holy cave shrine of Amarnath will start on July 3 and end on August 9. The journey can be taken using two routes -- longer and shorter (but steeper). The 48-km Pahalgam route in Anantnag and the steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route in Ganderbal are the two routes to the shrine. Numerous devotees are expected to take on the yatra, and the first batch of pilgrims will leave for Kashmir from the Jammu-based Bhagwati Nagar base camp a day before the yatra begins. Mock drills were conducted in Udhampur on Wednesday to prepare for any emergencies. The 13th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), is stationed in Udhampur. Udhampur (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 18 (ANI): Udhampur Deputy Commissioner Saloni Rai said that the district administration is prepared to accommodate more than six thousand people during the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Rai said that the district administration has also augmented the capacity of their other needs, like drinking water and washroom facilities. 'The Amarnath Yatra will commence from 3 July. It also passes through the Udhampur district. We have established the capacity to accommodate 6000-6500 people. 'We are also establishing toilet points along the highway,' the Deputy Commissioner said. Shri Amarnath Yatra will commence on July 3 this year. The Yatra, culminating on August 9 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, will pass through Udhampur. On Tuesday, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired a review meeting to prepare for security for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. Senior officials of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indian Army, CRPF, SSB, ITBP, BSF, and other agencies are taking part in the review meeting to finalise an action plan on security and preparations for the Amarnath Yatra. The meeting is being held at the Jammu and Kashmir Police headquarters. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Udhampur-Reasi Range, Sarah Rizvi, held a meeting on June 14 on security arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra. During the meeting, the DIG emphasised the importance of coordinated efforts among all stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of the pilgrims. The senior official highlighted the need for meticulous planning and execution of security measures to address any potential threats and challenges. The DIG stressed the importance of ensuring a high level of vigilance and preparedness for smooth conduct throughout the duration of the Yatra. Instructions were disseminated among various subordinate officers and concerned authorities to conduct regular briefing/debriefing and mock drills to ensure that all plans are effectively implemented and executed on the ground. Several officers under the U-R range attended the meeting. Earlier, Director General of Police (DGP), Jammu and Kashmir, Nalin Prabhat, chaired a high-level review meeting regarding the administrative and logistical preparations for the incoming Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies to be deployed for the Amarnath Yatra, 2025.
