In a small advisory issued hours before an encounter broke out in Udhampur, the IGP Jammu listed two things - avoid independent travel, travel in escorted convoys.
The advisory also holds significance in light of recent joint Army-police operation in Udhampur, condenamed Operation Bihali. Security forces were engaged in an encounter with terrorists in the Kuru area of Basantgarh in Udhampur.
The 38-day-long yatra to the 3,880-metre-high holy cave shrine of Amarnath will start on July 3 and end on August 9.
The journey can be taken using two routes -- longer and shorter (but steeper). The 48-km Pahalgam route in Anantnag and the steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route in Ganderbal are the two routes to the shrine.
Numerous devotees are expected to take on the yatra, and the first batch of pilgrims will leave for Kashmir from the Jammu-based Bhagwati Nagar base camp a day before the yatra begins.
Mock drills were conducted in Udhampur on Wednesday to prepare for any emergencies. The 13th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), is stationed in Udhampur.
"All arrangements have been put in place. The Udhampur district houses 26 lodgement centres with a capacity to accommodate 6,500 pilgrims. We have established centres to house pilgrims in case of any weather-related or other emergencies," Udhampur Deputy Commissioner Saloni Rai was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
She also inspected the lodgement centres and facilities for pilgrims.

Banerjee, who arrived at Digha on Wednesday, also walked the one-kilometre stretch along which the three chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balaram and Devi Subhadra will be pulled by devotees. She was accompanied by at least four ministers and around 50 senior officials, including the state director general of police and the chief secretary. Built as a cultural centre by the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO), the Jagannath temple was closed for the last 15 days following customs observed at the Jagannath temple at Puri in Odisha. It was reopened on Thursday. HIDCO decorated the chariots as well. The Rath Yatra will start in the afternoon. 'At least 250 buses have carried people from Kolkata since Wednesday. The number of passengers to the town has increased manifold ever since the temple was inaugurated on April 30,' said Suman Maity, joint secretary of the Joint Council of Bus Union. 'Digha was always a popular weekend destination for tourists. The footfall has swelled by at least 40% since May. The Rath Yatra has broken all records. Hotels have run out of accommodation,' Ashok Chanda, secretary of the New Digha Hotel Owners' Association, said. Banerjee oversaw the consecration ceremony at the new temple on April 30 that led Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition in the assembly, to launch a four-day Hindu religious conference at East Midnapore's Contai town around the same time. Adhikari accused Banerjee of passing off a cultural centre as a temple and alleged that people were having fish and meat out there and walking around in shoes. Built at a cost of around ₹ 250 crore, the temple is a replica of the ancient temple of Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Vishnu, at Puri, 350 km away. The Puri temple has been worshipped for centuries by Hindus as one of the Char Dhams (four abodes) of Lord Vishnu. The other three are at Badrinath, Dwarka and Rameswaram. 'The Digha temple is not a Dham. Mamata Banerjee is making fun of Hindus,' Adhikari said on Thursday. Bharatiya Janata Party leader Koustav Bagchi filed a public interest litigation (PIL) at the Calcutta high court in May, challenging the government's decision to appoint 100 civic volunteers for the temple. The chief minister sought to ignore the BJP's attacks on Thursday. 'I don't know religion. I know only people,' Mamata said.

Watch: Zip through highways: ₹3,000 FASTag pass offers unlimited travel from Aug 15
The Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has just announced a new FASTag-based Annual Pass, designed to make highway travel smoother and more affordable for private vehicle owners. Starting August 15, 2025, private car owners can opt for a ₹3,000 FASTag Annual Pass. This is available only for non-commercial vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. Commercial vehicles are not allowed under this scheme. Interestingly, lorry owners are now asking the government to extend a similar pass to commercial vehicles too. This Annual Pass is valid only on toll plazas operated by the National Highways Authority of India, which means it applies to National Highways and Expressways. If you're driving on a State Highway or a toll road run by a local body or a private operator, you'll still have to pay the regular toll. Trip calculation depends on the type of toll system. At point-based toll plazas, one crossing is counted as one trip. If you're doing a round trip, that's two trips. On closed toll systems like some expressways entering and exiting once counts as one trip. To activate the Annual Pass, you first need to ensure your FASTag is active and properly fixed to your vehicle. Then, visit the RajmargYatra app or the NHAI website. Once there, enter your vehicle and FASTag details, pay ₹3,000, and you're good to go. You'll receive an SMS confirmation once the pass is activated. The pass is valid either for 200 trips Once either limit is reached, your FASTag will automatically return to the regular toll deduction mode. And if you exhaust your trips before the year ends, you can recharge and get a new pass for another ₹3,000. Although this is completely optional. You can continue using your regular FASTag without the annual pass. But if you're someone who travels frequently maybe you commute daily road trips this pass could help you save anywhere between ₹5,000 and ₹10,000 a year. The government hopes the Annual Pass will ease some of the most common frustrations among highway users things like high toll charges, too many toll plazas in short stretches, and time lost in long queues. The Ministry says this move will help reduce congestion, avoid disputes, and make highway travel faster and fairer.

Zoom is free, and if absolutely necessary, pay a few hundred bucks and fly coach," wrote one user. "Astonishing that tech founders aren't the foremost users of virtual meeting technology. Private flights are not progress; they're contributing to climate breakdown and jeopardising the viability of your business. Keep building by all means-but build your legacy, build a sustainable future, not your own carbon footprint," commented another. However, one user praised the CEO, saying, "It's a testament to how hard work and perseverance can transform visions into reality. Keep pushing boundaries and proving that success is attainable with the right mindset." "Good for you-proof that focus and perseverance can take you anywhere," commented another.
