Hajiji puts trust in Beluran trio ahead of polls

Hajiji, accompanied by Samad, officiated the handover of land grants for the Beluran district at the launch ceremony of the 2025 Labuk Festival on Saturday. BELURAN (Aug 16): With the 17th Sabah State Election (PRN17) on the horizon, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor has called on voters in Beluran to rally behind Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), emphasising the importance of political stability and continuity in driving long-term development. Addressing a crowd during the launch of Pesta Labuk Beluran 2025 on Saturday, Hajiji said he was confident that GRS would retain all three state seats in the district namely Telupid, Sugut and Labuk, in the upcoming polls. 'We're nearing five years of administration. The election isn't far off, and I want all three constituencies in Beluran to be won by GRS. Support the candidates from our coalition,' he urged. The Chief Minister also cautioned the public against being misled by what he described as slander and misinformation propagated by the opposition. 'Don't be too quick to believe their accusations and lies. Every day, they manufacture slander, even while sleeping, they are dreaming up falsehoods,' he remarked. He stressed that the people should remain focused on the progress and development achieved under GRS, instead of being distracted by divisive narratives. 'We must move forward. Let's not allow these malicious tactics to derail our unity or the future we're building,' he said. Hajiji expressed strong confidence in the re-election prospects of GRS assemblymen Datuk Samad Jambri (Labuk), Datuk James Ratib (Sugut) and Datuk Jonnybone Kurum (Telupid), praising their work on the ground and dedication to their constituents. 'InsyaAllah, after the election, GRS will continue to lead the government. Samad will win again here in Labuk. James and Jonnybone too. We must unite to ensure they succeed,' Hajiji said. Samad has been the state assemblyman for Labuk since 2020. A member of Gagasan Rakyat, a key party in the GRS coalition, he has played an active role in rural infrastructure development and economic empowerment programmes in the district. He currently serves as the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister. James is the current Minister of Community Development and People's Wellbeing. Formerly with Umno, he joined Gagasan Rakyat and has since been a vocal advocate for healthcare access, social welfare and native land rights. Meanwhile, Jonnybone represents Telupid and is aligned with Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), one of the founding components of GRS. Touching on long-standing land issues, Hajiji also called on Yayasan Sabah to review claims by villagers who have occupied foundation-owned land for decades. 'They've been living there for generations. If possible, we should allocate this land as village reserve. We are a caring government, and we want our people to have certainty in their livelihoods,' he said. He stressed that the state government must prioritise resolving land tenure issues affecting informal settlers and rural communities to ensure long-term stability and development.

Durand Cup 2025: East Bengal Eye Third Consecutive Win Against Indian Air Force

Indian Super League (ISL) side East Bengal FC will look to notch up their third win on the trot in the Durand Cup when they face the Indian Air Force Football Team in their final group-stage match at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on Sunday, as per the official website of ISL. The Red & Gold Brigade sit atop Group A with six points from two matches, ahead of Namdhari FC, who also have six points but from three games. East Bengal FC kicked off their campaign with a thumping 5-0 win over South United FC before edging past Namdhari FC in a hard-fought encounter. Their opponents, IAF FT, are already out of contention for a knockout berth, having secured just one point from their first two games. Bottom-placed South United FC also have one point, which came from their draw against IAF FT. For East Bengal FC, the objective will be to maintain their winning momentum and head into the knockout stage with a perfect record, making this a key clash despite already being top of the group. On the other hand, their arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant thumped Diamond Harbour FC by a 5-1 scoreline at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Saturday. Anirudh Thapa, Jamie Maclaren, Liston Colaco, Sahal Abdul Samad, and Jason Cummings were on the scoresheet for the Mariners as they advanced to the Durand Cup quarter-finals. Despite the Mariners missing key players like Manvir Singh, Alberto Rodriguez, and Suhail Bhat due to injuries, Jose Molina's men dominated the game from the outset, controlling the ball possession and creating goal-scoring chances through both wings. Thapa broke the deadlock in the 19th minute with a beautiful curling finish from the edge of the box. However, Diamond Harbour FC shortly found the equaliser courtesy of Luka Majcen's goal from a one-on-one situation against Vishal Kaith. A sloppy defensive lapse from the MBSG's backline saw them concede the goal in the 24th minute. Maclaren restored the lead for the Kolkata giants with a clinical finish to score past the onrushing DHFC goalkeeper. Samad was again with his excellent passing range, initially snatched the ball from the opponent and played an inch-perfect through pass for the Australian, who got the better of it. With that, Mohun Bagan Super Giant went into the halftime break with a 2-1 lead. Diamond Harbour FC were down to ten men early in the second half as Naresh received a direct red card for a foul on Colaco inside the penalty box. Colaco, who has been in great form in the tournament with four goals in two games, made no mistake in finding the back of the net from the spot. Samad, who was looking in better shape since the opening minute, also found himself on the scoresheet. A brilliant link-up play among Liston, Cummings, and Sahal saw the Mariners increase their lead. Cummings also joined the party with a brilliant strike from the edge of the box. The forward came off the bench early in the second half and scored the fifth in the 80th minute. Following such a dominating victory, Mohun Bagan Super Giant sealed their spot in the Durand Cup quarter-finals.

Attending virtual court proceedings from toilet costs Gujarat man ₹1 lakh. Here's what happened

The Gujarat High Court on Monday imposed a fine of ₹ 1 lakh on a man who attended virtual proceedings from a toilet seat while relieving himself on live video streaming, reported Bar and Bench. The court also said it is considering sending the person concerned, named Samad Abdul Rehman Shah, to jail as his conduct was contumacious. "The contemnor has admitted about his conduct during the live-streaming proceedings. Thus, at this stage, we direct the contemnor to deposit ₹ 1 lakh before the registry of this court before the next date of hearing," said a Division Bench of Justices AS Supehia and RT Vachhani. The High Court also noted that despite its order, the HC Registrar (Information & Technology) has not filed a reply and no steps have been suggested about how such incidents can be stopped. The counsel appearing for the Registrar told the Division Bench that he would assist the court on the next hearing date. The case has been listed for the next hearing on July 22. In June, a video went viral on social media showing Samad attending Gujarat High Court's virtual proceedings while seated on a toilet and apparently relieving himself. The incident took place on June 20 before the bench of Justice Nirzar S. Desai. Initially in the video, a closeup of the man featured, showing Samad wearing a Bluetooth earphone. Subsequently, he was seen keeping his phone at a distance, revealing that he was seated on a toilet. The man was appearing as a respondent in a case seeking quashing of a first information report (FIR). He was the complainant in the criminal case, Bar and Bench report said citing the court records.

Gujarat HC initiates contempt proceedings against man who ‘sat on toilet' during virtual hearing

Days after a video of a man attending a virtual proceeding of the Gujarat High Court while sitting on a toilet was widely shared on social media, the HC directed the Registry to register a suo motu contempt proceeding against the resident of Surat. A Division Bench of Justice AS Supehia and Justice RT Vachhani passed an oral order on June 30, which was uploaded Thursday, directing the Registry to register suo motu contempt proceedings against Abdul Samad 'upon verification', and to produce a 'necessary report' before the next date of hearing. 'After the registration of contempt proceedings, the Registry shall issue the notice to the contempt or as to why he should not be prosecuted and punished for committing Contempt of Court as defined under Section 2(c) of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971. A suo motu proceedings shall be listed after a period of two weeks,' the court said in the oral order. Stating that the Presiding Judge of a court may direct to stop live streaming in such situations, the court also directed the Registrar, Information Technology to 'apprise this court about the mechanism to stop contumacious litigants in participating in livestreaming proceedings'. The court said that 'such disorderly and uncontrolled behaviour has become frequent'. The incident took place on June 20, when Samad, a complainant in an FIR lodged at the Kim police station in Surat district, had joined the virtual proceedings of the court of Justice Nirzar Desai and was seen sitting on a toilet while awaiting his turn to consent to quashing a petition. 'The infamous video tarnishing the image of this Court is widely circulated in social media and is required to be immediately banned and deleted,' the Court said. In the now-viral video clip of the live streaming of the High Court proceedings, Samad was initially seen in a close up with headphones. However, as he set his phone aside moments later, the video shows him on a toilet. He is then seen washing, and walking out of the bathroom to a different surrounding while awaiting his turn. Earlier in March this year, the Gujarat High Court had imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on a litigant who had joined a virtual hearing from a lavatory and sentenced him to community service on an eight hour shift daily for two weeks — cleaning and watering the garden of the HC in Sola in Ahmedabad. The court had rejected the defence of the man that he had joined the HC proceeding virtually for the first time and therefore committed a mistake.
