Hajiji puts trust in Beluran trio ahead of polls
BELURAN (Aug 16): With the 17th Sabah State Election (PRN17) on the horizon, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor has called on voters in Beluran to rally behind Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), emphasising the importance of political stability and continuity in driving long-term development.
Addressing a crowd during the launch of Pesta Labuk Beluran 2025 on Saturday, Hajiji said he was confident that GRS would retain all three state seats in the district namely Telupid, Sugut and Labuk, in the upcoming polls.
'We're nearing five years of administration. The election isn't far off, and I want all three constituencies in Beluran to be won by GRS. Support the candidates from our coalition,' he urged.
The Chief Minister also cautioned the public against being misled by what he described as slander and misinformation propagated by the opposition.
'Don't be too quick to believe their accusations and lies. Every day, they manufacture slander, even while sleeping, they are dreaming up falsehoods,' he remarked.
He stressed that the people should remain focused on the progress and development achieved under GRS, instead of being distracted by divisive narratives.
'We must move forward. Let's not allow these malicious tactics to derail our unity or the future we're building,' he said.
Hajiji expressed strong confidence in the re-election prospects of GRS assemblymen Datuk Samad Jambri (Labuk), Datuk James Ratib (Sugut) and Datuk Jonnybone Kurum (Telupid), praising their work on the ground and dedication to their constituents.
'InsyaAllah, after the election, GRS will continue to lead the government. Samad will win again here in Labuk. James and Jonnybone too. We must unite to ensure they succeed,' Hajiji said.
Samad has been the state assemblyman for Labuk since 2020. A member of Gagasan Rakyat, a key party in the GRS coalition, he has played an active role in rural infrastructure development and economic empowerment programmes in the district. He currently serves as the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister.
James is the current Minister of Community Development and People's Wellbeing. Formerly with Umno, he joined Gagasan Rakyat and has since been a vocal advocate for healthcare access, social welfare and native land rights.
Meanwhile, Jonnybone represents Telupid and is aligned with Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), one of the founding components of GRS.
Touching on long-standing land issues, Hajiji also called on Yayasan Sabah to review claims by villagers who have occupied foundation-owned land for decades.
'They've been living there for generations. If possible, we should allocate this land as village reserve. We are a caring government, and we want our people to have certainty in their livelihoods,' he said.
He stressed that the state government must prioritise resolving land tenure issues affecting informal settlers and rural communities to ensure long-term stability and development.

Squatters no more. More villages being gazetted under GRS: Hajiji
Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 By: Winnie Kasmir Text Size: Hajiji and George (centre) witnessing the handover of land by Walter (left) to Alan. SANDAKAN: The State Government is giving attention to long-established villages that have yet to be gazetted, including those within forest reserves, to ensure residents can continue to live there legally. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said this was why efforts are being made to gazette settlements, as shown by the recent approval of about 40,000 acres. He said the gazetted areas, including in Sipitang, Tenom and several other districts, reflected the Government's commitment to resolving the problems faced by villagers. 'We want to give assurance to the people that they will have legal ownership of their homes, no longer as squatters, but as recognised residents of villages that have long existed. 'That is why, at the recent State Assembly sitting, we released 40,000 acres from forest reserves and State land to be gazetted as legitimate villages. 'This is the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Government. We are concerned about the people, their villages and their future. We help those in need, and only this government has such a strong policy in place,' he said at the Land Allocation Ceremony for the gazettement of Kampung Karamunting Baharu at SK Karamunting Open Hall, here, on Friday. At the event, he witnessed the handover of land owned by the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) to be gazetted as Native Reserve Land for Kampung Karamunting Baharu. Also present were State Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister Datuk James Ratib, Karamunting Assemblyman Datuk George Hiew, Kuamut Assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah, Telupid Assemblyman Datuk Jonnybone Kurum, Nominated Assemblyman Datuk Jaffari Waliam, Senator Anna Bell @ Suzieana Perian and MPS President Walter Kenson. Hajiji described the occasion as a historic moment for Karamunting Baharu residents, noting that it was not merely a land handover but also a recognition of the rights and settlement history of the community that had lived there for decades. He also thanked George for his role in ensuring that Kampung Karamunting Baharu was gazetted as a legitimate village within the Karamunting constituency. On another matter, Hajiji reminded local authorities to make it easier for the public to access services, such as business licence applications. He praised MPS under Walter Kenson for expediting business licence approvals from several weeks to just one day. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Barisan, Pakatan seal Sabah deal
SHAH ALAM: Seat distribution between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan for the upcoming Sabah state election has been finalised, with no overlaps, says Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said no negotiations have been held between Barisan and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) on seat distribution or cooperation for the polls to respect Pakatan. 'What has been finalised is Barisan-Pakatan, and we respect Pakatan-GRS. There are no direct negotiations between Barisan and GRS. 'So far, any discussions to avoid three-cornered contests or seat overlaps have only been conducted behind the scenes,' he said. However, Ahmad Zahid said Barisan anticipated that three-cornered contests would be unavoidable, given the likelihood of participation from other parties and new political entities, Bernama reported. 'Since there are many new parties wanting to contest this time, three-cornered fights will certainly be unavoidable, possibly even up to eight-cornered. 'The decision is theirs to make, reflecting the current political landscape in Sabah. 'Barisan-Pakatan has no overlapping seats,' he said after attending the 16th national-level Civil Defence Student Corps commissioning ceremony, Bernama reported. Ahmad Zahid was earlier reported as saying that negotiations on cooperation and seat distribution within the Barisan, Pakatan and GRS alliance for the state election were nearly completed. In SEREMBAN, Barisan deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the coalition will defend all seats it won in the last Sabah polls. The coalition will also contest all traditional seats that were previously given to Bersatu, he added. 'In the previous Sabah election, many traditional Barisan seats were given to Bersatu in the spirit of cooperation. 'But we were backstabbed. We don't want this to happen again,' he told reporters after officiating the Rembau Umno wanita, youth and puteri wings meetings.

Sabah seen as benchmark for PH-BN unity formula
PETALING JAYA: Although Pakatan Harapan (PH) has agreed with Barisan Nasional (BN) to avoid contesting against each other in the upcoming 17th Sabah state election, it has yet to reveal who it will back as the next chief minister. Sabah PKR chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said negotiations between PH and BN had been concluded, but talks with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) – a coalition of eight Sabah-based parties – were ongoing. He explained that the negotiations were aimed at preventing electoral clashes among 'allied' coalitions – PH, BN and GRS – in the state election, with the current assembly set to dissolve automatically in November. Mustapha said whichever party secured the majority of seats in the election would be entitled to the chief minister's post. 'The question of who holds power will, of course, ultimately depend on who commands the majority of seats in the state assembly. According to the state constitution, it does not matter which party it is, the one that commands majority support will be presented to the palace to be appointed as chief minister. 'So for now, each party may have its own candidate, but in the end it comes down to the constitution. Whoever secures majority support will be the one put forward to the palace as the chief minister,' he told theSun in Parliament on Wednesday. Despite an agreement at the federal level, with PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi both stating that PH and BN would form an electoral pact with GRS to avoid clashes across the 73 state seats, it is widely known that Sabah BN and GRS are not on good terms. Sabah BN, led by Datuk Bung Moktar Radin – who is also touted as its candidate for chief minister – is a known rival of GRS chief Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who currently holds the post. It was reported that Bung is seeking for BN to contest 38 to 40 seats, with the remainder allocated to PH. Meanwhile, opposition party Parti Warisan, led by former chief minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, has confirmed its intention to contest all 73 state assembly seats. At present, GRS controls 41 seats, PH holds seven, Umno has nine, Warisan has 14, while other parties account for two seats. Mustapha added that the public is closely observing whether the PH-BN formula in Sabah will succeed as there is strong potential for it to serve as a model for other state elections leading up to the 16th general election (GE16). 'People are now viewing the Sabah electorate as a benchmark for this formula. After this, we will have state elections in Malacca, then Sarawak, followed by Johor and finally GE16. If we do not handle Sabah properly, it could create cracks within the unity government. 'If those cracks widen, they could seriously dim our chances of winning a second term at the federal level,' he said. Mustapha said PKR would act as mediator to help reconcile differences among coalition partners at both state and federal levels.
