Sabah seen as benchmark for PH-BN unity formula
Sabah PKR chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said negotiations between PH and BN had been concluded, but talks with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) – a coalition of eight Sabah-based parties – were ongoing.
He explained that the negotiations were aimed at preventing electoral clashes among 'allied' coalitions – PH, BN and GRS – in the state election, with the current assembly set to dissolve automatically in November.
Mustapha said whichever party secured the majority of seats in the election would be entitled to the chief minister's post.
'The question of who holds power will, of course, ultimately depend on who commands the majority of seats in the state assembly. According to the state constitution, it does not matter which party it is, the one that commands majority support will be presented to the palace to be appointed as chief minister.
'So for now, each party may have its own candidate, but in the end it comes down to the constitution. Whoever secures majority support will be the one put forward to the palace as the chief minister,' he told theSun in Parliament on Wednesday.
Despite an agreement at the federal level, with PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi both stating that PH and BN would form an electoral pact with GRS to avoid clashes across the 73 state seats, it is widely known that Sabah BN and GRS are not on good terms.
Sabah BN, led by Datuk Bung Moktar Radin – who is also touted as its candidate for chief minister – is a known rival of GRS chief Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who currently holds the post.
It was reported that Bung is seeking for BN to contest 38 to 40 seats, with the remainder allocated to PH.
Meanwhile, opposition party Parti Warisan, led by former chief minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, has confirmed its intention to contest all 73 state assembly seats.
At present, GRS controls 41 seats, PH holds seven, Umno has nine, Warisan has 14, while other parties account for two seats.
Mustapha added that the public is closely observing whether the PH-BN formula in Sabah will succeed as there is strong potential for it to serve as a model for other state elections leading up to the 16th general election (GE16).
'People are now viewing the Sabah electorate as a benchmark for this formula. After this, we will have state elections in Malacca, then Sarawak, followed by Johor and finally GE16. If we do not handle Sabah properly, it could create cracks within the unity government.
'If those cracks widen, they could seriously dim our chances of winning a second term at the federal level,' he said.
Mustapha said PKR would act as mediator to help reconcile differences among coalition partners at both state and federal levels.

Hajiji: Shahelmey will join us for Sabah polls
PUTATAN: Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor confirmed today that his deputy, Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, would be joining his team for the upcoming 17th Sabah state election (PRN17). "He will follow siurang (us)," Hajiji said when asked about Shahelmey's status. Despite his six-year suspension from Umno Sabah in 2023, Shahelmey is still regarded as part of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN), according to Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. The term siurang, a local Sabahan expression meaning "us", refers to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), which Hajiji leads. Bung Moktar has repeatedly said that Umno would not nominate Shahelmey again following his decision to support Hajiji and the GRS government in January 2023, after Sabah Umno withdrew its support for the chief minister. Speaking after attending the Youth Programme for Tanjung Aru, Petagas and Tanjung Keramat this afternoon, Hajiji expressed confidence that GRS could capture all three state seats in the Putatan parliamentary constituency in PRN17. He also voiced confidence in Shahelmey, who is also the Putatan MP, to defend the Tanjung Keramat seat, which he won under a BN ticket during the 16th state election (PRN16) in September 2020. "It will not be difficult… he will surely win. He is still the assemblyman, and he is also the member of parliament," Hajiji said. Shahelmey, however, risks losing his eligibility as Putatan MP if he contests under a GRS ticket in PRN17 due to the anti-hopping law, as the parliamentary seat was won under a BN ticket in the 15th General Election (GE15) in November 2022. Earlier in his speech, Hajiji, who is also GRS chairman, said the coalition could secure all three state seats in Putatan if the people remain united in supporting the government. "Putatan is fortunate to have a deputy chief minister and elected representatives who actively serve the people. God willing, in this election GRS will take all three state seats. The people of Putatan must unite to ensure this good government is returned," he said. Currently, the Tanjung Aru state seat is held by opposition party Warisan, while Petagas and Tanjung Keramat are aligned with GRS. In PRN16, Petagas was also won by Warisan, but its assemblyman Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Sahari quit the party in February 2023 to join Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat), a GRS component party.

Stay united, reject fake news - Joachim
Dr Joachim (front row, third from left) singing the party's official song 'Bersatu Dalam PBS' with more than 300 members in attendance. SANDAKAN (Aug 17): Acting president of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, has urged all PBS members to continue working closely with allies in preparation for the upcoming 17th State Election (PRN17). He also reminded members not to be easily swayed by fake news or provocative messages circulated through the media. 'I can say almost every day, new allegations are being thrown by the opposition to create division among PBS, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) and Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat). Every day, something new emerges in the media,' said Dr Joachim, who is also Deputy Chief Minister II. 'So do not believe them right away. Always refer to the party leadership, specifically your respective division chiefs. And division chiefs, if you are unsure, do not carelessly make or issue inaccurate statements,' he stressed. He said this when officiating the joint annual general meeting of three divisions — PBS Lamag, Sukau, and Sekong — at the Sandakan Community Hall on Sunday. Touching on political cooperation, Dr Joachim reaffirmed that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will continue its collaboration with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in facing PRN17. 'If not for the support of Pakatan Harapan during the 'Langkah Kinabalu' event in 2023, we might be sitting in the opposition today,' he explained. 'Therefore, I urge all of us to pray that everything proceeds smoothly and for the best, to ensure that GRS remains the dominant political force in Sabah,' he added.
