Coroner to discuss developments in case of woman found buried with a rose in 2018

Saturday will mark seven years since a woman was found buried in a shallow grave in North Avondale. She was wrapped in a sheet and had a long-stemmed rose on her chest. Hamilton County Coroner Lakshmi Sammarco and her team have made multiple pleas to the public in an attempt to identify her with little progress. However, Sammarco announced she will be discussing developments in the case during a May 27 press conference. Back in 2018, children spotted a portion of her body exposed in the 400 block of Glenwood Avenue at Alston Park apartments. The coroner said she had been buried for some time and her body was decomposing. She was found wearing a tank top, a Smoky Mountain Moonshine T-shirt and a sweater along with loose pants when she was found. Earrings and black rope bracelets were found on her body. Though the cause of death was not determined, Sammarco never suspected foul play. "They didn't have to bury her. They didn't have to leave a rose behind. Clearly, it was someone who cared about her," Sammarco said. Investigators recovered DNA, determined she had cocaine and morphine in her system and reconstructed what she may have looked like using a 3D scan of her skull. This gave investigators a face, even though they still lacked a name. In 2023, new digital facial reconstruction images were released with the help of the Ohio Attorney General's Office and the Ohio State University. Sammarco will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. The Enquirer will update this story. European Group 1 winner Sammarco set for Australian debut with Ciaron Maher at Sandown

European stayer Sammarco, a multiple Group 1 winner in Germany, is set to become a Melbourne winter fixture with potential spring ambitions. The 2022 German Derby winner, now trained by Ciaron Maher, banked more than $1m prizemoney through 18 starts in Europe, including solid stakes performances in France and Italy. Sammarco could in time follow in the hoofsteps of Maher stablemates past and present, including Berkshire Breeze, Floating Artist, Grand Promenade and Persan to parlay winter into spring. 'Ciaron has done it plenty of times with those types of horses going back three, four, five years,' assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said. 'He's an interesting horse, (99 rating) is reasonable, it's going to be interesting how that German form ties in. 'We've had some of our riders on him and Ethan (Brown) had a sit on him recently and said he gave him a feel, that's what you want to hear. 'He's definitely one of those staying horses that could do anything, especially this time of year … you know he's got the stamina, he's just got to get the first half right.' • Brad Waters' Sandown Hillside Saturday tips, analysis The opposition could be too slick on Saturday for Sammarco in the 1800m Benchmark 100 but the six-year-old is expected to be 'doing his best work late'. 'He'll want the run naturally (first-up) but it's just the right race to kick him off in,' Turnbull said. 'Our plan is to pick through winter, he'll probably go through the Banjo Paterson Series and then all being well you're at the doorstep of spring (race) fit. 'He will be regulation four to five weeks every run, emulating that European style … he's not young, he's seasoned and we can't reinvent the wheel running every two weeks.' Sammarco arrived in Australia last year but needed the time to settle into conditions. 'We moved him from Ballarat from Cranbourne, had him barefoot for a long time,' Turnbull said. 'He's going quite well, last time (initial preparation) we thought he was going OK but once we got to the stage of racing him we thought we better just put him away.' Sammarco is $17 on Saturday. Turnbull will also saddle Sayedaty Sadaty, an $8.50 chance, for Maher in the race. Sayedaty Sadaty was gelded after racing too fiercely in the Caulfield Cup last year, finished third last. He resumed in a 1600m at Flemington in March but 'knocked a joint' in the run and dropped out. 'We think he will get to being like a Future History, Duke De Sessa-style of horse, he will be rolling forward when he's fit between 10 and 12 furlongs (2000m-2200m), a very nice horse,' Turnbull said. 'Again 1800m is bottom of his trip but this horse does have a bit of speed, where he lands is going to be interesting (from barrier one) because I don't think we want to drag him out of the race.'

Alabama football adds TE from transfer portal to enhance depth at position

After working with a small option of tight ends throughout spring practice, Alabama football has made a key addition to the room through the NCAA transfer portal. Jack Sammarco, a Cincinnati, Ohio, tight end who spent his freshman season at West Virginia, will transfer to Alabama, Evan Dreyer, Sammarco's coach at Anderson High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, told The Tuscaloosa News. Advertisement "Jack is an extremely great kid and player. He will be attending the University of Alabama," Dreyer said. "As his high school coach, I am extremely proud of what he has done and what he is going to accomplish in the SEC. He's excited to go to school – where his sister attends – as well as develop into a high-profile player at one of the best universities in the nation." Sammarco, who stands at 6-foot-6 and 240 pounds, recorded one catch for 4 yards as a true freshman with the Mountaineers. Sammarco appeared in each of West Virginia's games in 2024, playing 203 snaps across offense and special teams, per Pro Football Focus. Eighty of his 95 snaps on offense were as an in-line tight end. A former three-star recruit out of Anderson High School in Cincinnati, Sammarco earned All-State honors after recording 315 yards and five touchdowns on 27 catches. He was the No. 1,475 prospect and the No. 74 tight end int he 2024 recruiting class, per 247Sports' composite rankings. Advertisement Alabama was without Josh Cuevas, Danny Lewis and Marshall Pritchett for the majority of spring practice. Kaleb Edwards, a true freshman, will join the team after graduating high school. Jay Lindsey was the only scholarship tight end available for Alabama at the end of spring, joined by preferred walk-ons Jayden Hobson and Peter Knudson. TRENDING STORIES: Mobile crisis mental health services to resume in Montgomery County Local self-serve tap house now closed Woman goes overboard on Royal Caribbean 80s-themed cruise The coroner says they do not expect foul play in the man's death, but his fingerprints are not in any system and the facial recognition software has not identified him, WCPO says. The man was white, around six feet tall and around 230 pounds, according to WCPO. He had brown hair, brown eyes, a full beard and longer hair, WCPO says. The man did not have any identifying tattoos or scars, and was found with black-framed glasses, black pants, a black jacket and a black backpack, WCPO says. 'This person had not been dead for a while, he was found pretty quickly after his death,' said County Coroner Lakshmi Sammarco. 'It's just there's nothing in the system.' A second man's body was discovered March 1 near the Delhi Township and Cincinnati line in the 6800 block of Hillside Ave in a heavily wooded area, WCPO says. According to WCPO, the man's remains were skeletal when they were discovered. Sammarco says he doesn't suspect foul play in this death, either, according to WCPO. 'Judging by the area where he was found and the steepness of the hillside and the likelihood of his size, we don't think he was put there,' said Sammarco. 'We don't think he was placed there, we do think that he probably took himself there and then died. So we're not suspecting foul play.' According to WCPO, the remains were a middle aged black man who was around six feet tall. They also say he was wearing XL sized shirts, a Port Authority-style fleece jacket, Levi jeans and size 13 Airwalk shoes. According to WCPO, Sammarco estimates the man died last fall. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office at (513) 946-8700. [SIGN UP: WHIO-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]
