After working with a small option of tight ends throughout spring practice, Alabama football has made a key addition to the room through the NCAA transfer portal.
Jack Sammarco, a Cincinnati, Ohio, tight end who spent his freshman season at West Virginia, will transfer to Alabama, Evan Dreyer, Sammarco's coach at Anderson High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, told The Tuscaloosa News.

"Jack is an extremely great kid and player. He will be attending the University of Alabama," Dreyer said. "As his high school coach, I am extremely proud of what he has done and what he is going to accomplish in the SEC. He's excited to go to school – where his sister attends – as well as develop into a high-profile player at one of the best universities in the nation."
Sammarco, who stands at 6-foot-6 and 240 pounds, recorded one catch for 4 yards as a true freshman with the Mountaineers.
Sammarco appeared in each of West Virginia's games in 2024, playing 203 snaps across offense and special teams, per Pro Football Focus. Eighty of his 95 snaps on offense were as an in-line tight end.
A former three-star recruit out of Anderson High School in Cincinnati, Sammarco earned All-State honors after recording 315 yards and five touchdowns on 27 catches. He was the No. 1,475 prospect and the No. 74 tight end int he 2024 recruiting class, per 247Sports' composite rankings.

Alabama was without Josh Cuevas, Danny Lewis and Marshall Pritchett for the majority of spring practice. Kaleb Edwards, a true freshman, will join the team after graduating high school.
Jay Lindsey was the only scholarship tight end available for Alabama at the end of spring, joined by preferred walk-ons Jayden Hobson and Peter Knudson.

Birthday boy Tommy Morrison tied for lead after opening round of 2025 U.S. Amateur

Happy birthday, Tommy Morrison. It was a stellar start for the now 21-year-old Morrison, the rising senior at Texas who opened in 4-under 66 on Monday at Olympic Club's Ocean Course in the first round of stroke play at the 2025 U.S. Amateur. Morrison, who had a clean card with four birdies, is tied with Charlie Forster after the opening day in the Bay Area. "I think my process on each and every shot, and the lines I took, were really clean," Morrison said. "I felt I wasalmost 100 percent ready to go while I was over the ball — which, obviously, you should be all the time — but thatwas a big focus for me today. I think I did a nice job of that." The start was also pivotal for Morrison, ranked sixth in the world, as he looks to secure a spot on the U.S. Walker Cup team. With five spots still up for grabs, the U.S. Amateur provides the final chance for players to showcase why they belong on the team to captain Nathan Smith and the selection committee. Only 20 golfers in the 312-person field shot under par on Olympic Club's Ocean Course and Lake Course in the opening round, with the Ocean Course, the stroke-play co-host, playing half a shot easier. Of the 10 players within two shots of the lead after the opening round, only two played the Lake Course on Monday. After the opening round, there are 101 players at T-64 or better, which is the cut off for match play. After Tuesday's second round, the field will be cut to 64 players, with a playoff to complete the match-play bracket, if needed. Match play begins Wednesday at the Lake Course. World No. 1 amateur Jackson Koivun opened in 2-under 68 on the Ocean Course. Among those with work to do to make the cut are Olympic Club member Jacob Goode (3 over), world No. 3 Ethan Fang (3 over), Elite Amateur Golf Series winner Tyler Watts (5 over) and NCAA individual champ Michael La Sasso (8 over), among others.

No. 8 Alabama names Ty Simpson its starting quarterback ahead of season opener against Florida State

Kalen DeBoer has found a replacement for Jalen Milroe. No. 8 Alabama named junior Ty Simpson its starting quarterback on Monday night. Simpson will lead the Crimson Tide in their season opener against Florida State on Aug. 30. Simpson and the rest of the team were told about the decision during a meeting on Monday, according to ESPN's Chris Low. He beat out redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and freshman Keelon Russell for the job. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Simpson is in his fourth year with the Crimson Tide, and he has spent the past two seasons as the backup. Milroe won the starting job over Simpson last season. Simpson stepped in for Milroe briefly during the 2023 campaign during their matchup with South Florida. He went 5-of-9 for 73 yards and ran in a 1-yard touchdown to help lead Alabama to the 17-3 win after being tied up at halftime. Milroe returned and closed out the rest of the year after that week. Simpson has largely led the quarterback battle in the lead up to the season. He appeared to stand out during the Crimson Tide's first preseason scrimmage last weekend, and DeBoer had said previously that Simpson would be the team's starter earlier this offseason if he had to make a decision in the moment. Simpson was a five-star recruit coming out of high school, and the No. 2 quarterback in his class. He had offers from Clemson and Tennessee before opting to go with Alabama. Simpson's dad, Jason, has been the head coach at UT Martin since 2006. He's the longest-tenured coach in the Ohio Valley Conference and holds a 115-87 overall record with four conference titles under his belt. Alabama went 94 last season, the first under DeBoer after he took over for longtime head coach Nick Saban. It marked the team's first season without double-digit wins since 2007. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 8 in the first AP Poll of the season that was released on Monday afternoon. They were one of 10 teams from the SEC, including top-ranked Texas, in the inaugural poll. That's the most ever by a single conference in the preseason poll.

Alabama reportedly names starting quarterback for 2025 season

According to multiple reports, the Alabama Crimson Tide are expected to name Ty Simpson the starting quarterback for the 2025 season. The news was first reported Monday night by The Tuscaloosa News, with multiple other outlets also confirming the report. Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has yet to officially publicly name a starter between Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell. A redshirt junior, Simpson is entering his fourth season at Alabama this fall, with each of the previous three having come as a backup. From 2022-24, Simpson has appeared in 16 games where he has completed 58% of his pass attempts for 381 yards, while also having rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns on 22 attempts. Simpson was also formerly one of the headline names from Alabama's 2022 recruiting class, rated as a five-star prospect out of Westview High School in Tennessee, per the 247Sports Composite rankings. Alabama is set to open the 2025 season at Florida State on Saturday, Aug. 30, and it now appears that Simpson will be the starter under center in that contest.
