Visakhapatnam: State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav said that more than funds, hope and aspiration are required to develop all sectors across the state. Speaking after inaugurating buildings built at a cost of Rs 29.7 crore in the premises of the Government Hospital for Mental Care and the Ayushman Arogya Mandir built at a cost of Rs 1.38 crore here on Tuesday, he said that extensive steps are taken to strengthen the health sector in the Andhra Pradesh. 'Visakha Institute of Medical Science will be developed on a par with Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences,' he assured. Keeping long term goals in view, the Minister assured that or Diploma in Psychiatry and MPhil courses with 30 seats in Clinical Psychology will be introduced from the next academic year. Also, a decision will be made after considering the name change of the mental hospital in Visakhapatnam, which is meeting the health needs of the North Andhra districts. 'In the past five years, the previous government was not able to complete the building work even though there were funds. The NDA government is able to construct buildings with modern facilities by raising funds through centrally-sponsored schemes,' Satya Kumar informed, inaugurating the Centre for Excellence at Government Hospital for Mental Care. Further, the Minister expressed concern that 15 crore people in the country are suffering from mental illnesses and there number of psychiatrists available in the state is very less. He opined that there are only 25,000 psychiatrists in the country and there is a need to increase the number to 50,000 soon. Vijayawada: Minister for medical, health and family welfare Y Satya Kumar Yadav urged secondary hospitals to reduce Cesarean operations and promote natural childbirths. He noted that 41 per cent of deliveries in these hospitals are C-sections and requested strategies to lower this rate and increase natural births. At the launch of a four-day state-level training programme for district coordinators of health services (DCHSs) from 26 districts at the secondary health directorate office in Tadepalli on Tuesday, the minister called for reforms in DCHS operations. He stressed the need for better leadership, accountability, and service delivery in public healthcare. The training aims to address issues identified during a recent review with DCHSs and district medical and health officers (DM&HOs) to improve service quality. Satya Kumar encouraged district officials to lead teams and foster coordinated efforts for better healthcare. He also introduced a mobile application developed by the secondary health directorate to support this effort. Addressing allegations of hospital corruption, the minister stated that corruption will not be tolerated. He directed DCHSs to ensure transparency, take responsibility, and compete to improve medical service quality. He added that field visits are crucial to identify hospital and healthcare system issues. He emphasised punctuality in hospitals, warning that doctors who fail to comply will face strict action. Satya Kumar described health as the foundation of economic progress and urged a committed approach to achieving Viksit Bharat and Swarnandhra Pradesh goals. He instructed DCHSs to strengthen NTR health services in secondary hospitals and increase pre-authorisations under the scheme. The minister detailed infrastructure upgrades, including ultrasound services in 90 hospitals, 149 X-ray machines installed, tele-radiology services in 89 hospitals, 20 new dialysis centers, and 13 Integrated Public Health Laboratories (IPHLs) offering 139 diagnostic tests since the NDA government took office. Over 15,000 doctors serve in the public health sector, including DMHOs, DCHSs, and state-level officers. The minister urged them to develop leadership skills for efficient administrative management. He reported an increase in secondary hospital attendance from 60 per cent to 84 per cent, aiming for 95 per cent. Of 12,779 sanctioned posts in 242 secondary hospitals, 1,803 are vacant, though 462 doctors were filled in the past year.

Vijayawada: Minister for medical and health Y Satya Kumar Yadav said a committee will be constituted to introduce reforms and bring efficiency in the functioning of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences. The minister conducted a review on 39-year-old health university on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said that the university should give more priority for strengthening medical education. He opined that so far, the university has been concentrating on conducting examinations but steps should be taken to improve the quality of medical education. When the minister fails to get answer from officials over steps taken to improve quality of medical education, he said the university must bring out a system to improve standards. He said as per the university Act, priority should be given to improve standards and on research programmes. He observed that there was no trace of focusing on research programmes though thousands of people visit government hospitals for treatment of various diseases. Satya Kumar said a committee will be formed to study the existing system and to suggest steps to improve the functioning of the university and to improve medical education standards. At present, more than 500 medical, dental, Ayush and nursing colleges are functioning under the supervision of Dr NTR university of health sciences. Health university vice-chancellor P Chandrasekhar, registrar Radhikareddy and DME Narsimham were present.

Efforts to ensure better healthcare yielding positive results in Andhra Pradesh, says Health Minister Satya Kumar

The efforts to ensure better delivery of healthcare services to the public at their doorstep during the past one year have yielded positive results, according to Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav. In a five-page report submitted to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on the performance of the department, Mr. Satya Kumar, who had taken charge on June 16, 2024, said these efforts were reflected in increased accountability of those involved in the health sector, regular monitoring and quantification of performance at all levels. In the report that was submitted on June 16 and released to the media on Tuesday, the Minister wrote that at first, he had noticed high degree of absenteeism on the part of doctors, para-medical and other supporting staff, lack of accountability and performance. 'Much of these have seen improvement, including attendance, volume of outpatient and inpatient services, public perception about government hospitals,' he noted. The Minister reported to the Chief Minister about large-scale irregularities in governance, including recruitments, during the tenure of the previous government. To support his statement, he referred to the selection lists at the district level being prepared by some Ministers instead of by the Collectors concerned. 'Zero political interference' 'The present government has taken up recruitment of over 8,000 doctors and other health professionals during the last one year, with zero political interference and without any other considerations. Tenders for various works and procurement are being decided strictly as per stipulated procedure,' the Minister said. Mr. Satya Kumar said performance monitoring and incentivising good work had been given priority, while postings and transfers of District Medical and Health Officers, District Coordinators of Health Services, Superintendents of Government General Hospitals and principals of Government Medical Colleges had been done in an unbiased manner. Central funds 'The efforts have resulted in increased scale of sanction of funds and facilities,' he said. Listing them out, the Minister said the Centre had sanctioned 3,318 buildings for Ayushman Arogya Mandirs at a cost of ₹1,065 crore, 10 Critical Care Blocks, 13 Integrated Public Health Labs, ₹80 crore for AYUSH services, ₹90 crore for strengthening food quality testing laboratories, etc. The Minister added that the Central government also released ₹100 crore as Performance Incentive for effective implementation of National Health Mission (NHM) in the State. More needs to be done to realise 'Arogyandhrapradesh', Mr. Satya Kumar said.
