ALOR SETAR: A pasar malam trader selling children's toys on Wednesday (June 4) was sentenced to 30 months' jail and fined RM1,500 by the Magistrate's Court here after pleading guilty to breaking into the home of ex- Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah last week. Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah also ordered the night market trader, T. Rakesh Kumar, 44, to serve an additional six months' jail if he defaulted on his fine. According to the charge, the accused was alleged to have committed housebreaking by entering the residence of the former Kedah Menteri Besar and stealing a grass-cutting machine at Taman Rakyat here at 2.50am on May 29. For the offence, he was charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code and punishable under the same section, which provides for imprisonment of up to 14 years and a fine or whipping. Earlier, the accused, who was represented by counsel from the National Legal Aid Foundation, Aina Shafina Idrus Saidi, appealed for a lenient sentence, citing that he is married, has no fixed income and is responsible for supporting his wife and parents. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Sharmila Md Asri urged the court to impose a commensurate punishment as the offence was a repeat case and the accused had previous convictions for similar offences. – Bernama

ALOR STAR: A pasar malam trader was sentenced to 30 months in jail and fined RM1,500 for breaking into the home of former Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah and stealing a lawnmower last Thursday. T. Rakesh Kumar pleaded guilty when the charge was read before Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah at the Magistrate's Court here today. He faces an additional six months in prison if he fails to pay the fine. According to the charge sheet, Rakesh broke into the residence, located in Taman Rakyat here, at 2.50am on May 29 and stole a lawnmower belonging to Ahmad Bashah. He was charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to 14 years and, for repeat offenders, a fine or whipping. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Sharmila Md Asri urged the court to impose a commensurate sentence along with a whipping, citing the accused's previous criminal record. In mitigation, Rakesh's counsel, Aina Shafina Idrus Saidi, appealed for leniency, stating that Rakesh is the sole caretaker of his wife and his elderly, ailing parents. The court ordered the sentence to run from the date of his arrest.

TENOM: A man was arrested after allegedly breaking into a house in Kampung Saga and stealing jewellery, watches and women's underwear. The incident, which occurred around 8.30pm on Saturday, came to light when the victim's neighbour heard a loud noise coming from the house. The neighbour alerted nearby villagers, who quickly surrounded the property. District police chief Superintendent Azmir Abd Razak said the man was spotted climbing out of a rear window of the house. "He was apprehended by the villagers, and several items believed to have been stolen were found in his possession, including some jewellery, three pairs of women's underwear and a screwdriver," Azmir said. A Perodua Kancil parked by the roadside, believed to belong to the suspect, was also found at the scene. The villagers later contacted the police. "Upon arrival, we arrested the man. "Initial checks showed he had entered the house by breaking the rear window of a bedroom. "At the time, the homeowner was in Kota Kinabalu. "The suspect and the seized items were taken to the Beaufort district police headquarters for further investigation," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking. The offence carries a maximum penalty of five-year imprisonment and a fine.

PETALING JAYA: A mechanic suffered losses of approximately RM230,000 loss after his house was broken into and his Lexus was stolen at a residential area in Bakri last Friday. According to Sinar Harian, Muar District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz, said the incident was discovered by the victim, 38, after a neighbour called him around 9am upon hearing suspicious noises coming from the house. 'The victim, who was at work at the time, rushed home and found the house in a mess. A Lexus vehicle parked in front of the house was also missing. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have broken into the house and made off with cash and the vehicle,' he was quoted as saying. ALSO READ: Toyota Hilux tops list of most stolen vehicles in 2024 The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking, which carries a jail term of up to five years and a fine, or up to 14 years if theft is involved. The case is also being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code for motor vehicle theft, which provides for imprisonment of between one and seven years and a fine. The public has been advised to take extra safety measures such as installing alarm systems, closed-circuit cameras (CCTV), additional locks, and monitoring their homes regularly. 'Community cooperation is crucial in preventing crime and ensuring residential areas remain safe.'

MUAR: A 38-year-old mechanic's house was broken into while he was at work, with valuables worth about RM230,000 stolen. Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the victim's neighbour noticed strange sounds coming from his home in Bakri here last Friday (May 2) morning and decided to inform him. 'The victim rushed home to find that his house had been broken into and his luxury vehicle missing. 'A search for the suspects is ongoing,' Raiz Mukhliz said in a statement on Monday (May 5). A closed-circuit television footage of the incident showed a person talking outside the house while another person drove the victim's car out of the porch. The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft. ACP Raiz Mukhliz urged those with information about the incident to head to the nearest police station or call the Muar police hotline at 06-9564 800.
