Third time's a charm: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik reign supreme in Singapore
SINGAPORE, June 2 — Malaysia's national men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik continued their impressive run this season when they won the Singapore Open yesterday. The Malaysians came back from a set down to beat fifth seeds Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae of South Korea 15-21, 21-18, 21-19 in a 65-minute thriller at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, their third title this year following their victories at the Badminton Asia Championships in April and the Thailand Open in May. 'Their condition was very good. After the first set, I knew we needed to increase our speed. So we just pushed very hard for every point,' Wooi Yik told reporters as he credited coach Herry Iman Pierngadi for playing a major role in their recent performances, especially in refining their attacking gameplay. 'Coach really plays a very big role. He is the one with the idea of how to complete our gameplay, which was previously inconsistent. But it's still a long journey, we still have a big mission this year, so I feel this is just the start for us, he said. Aaron meanwhile said that their coach has been instrumental in motivating them, both in matches and training sessions. 'He's only been with us for three months, so we're still learning from him. I think we still need time, but overall, we've improved. He gives us a lot of confidence during training. He doesn't put a lot of pressure on us. He also reminds us to be happy every day,' he said. The duo said their next focus would be the Indonesia Open, scheduled for June 3 to 8 at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, where they are slated to take on Denmark's Rasmus Kjaer and Frederik Sogaard, whom they defeated in the opening round in Singapore. The world No. 3 pair have been in great form this season, having captured the Thailand Open title on May 18 and finishing as runners-up at the Malaysia Masters last week. However, Aaron-Wooi Yik will need to be cautious, as they lost to the Korean pair in their previous encounter at the India Open 2025 in January. Won Ho-Seung Jae cruised to the final after defeating Danish pair, Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, 21-17 and 21-16. Aaron-Wooi Yik, the third seeds, showcased their class and composure by ousting India's duo, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, 19-21, 21-10, 21-18 in 64 minutes. It was a dominant display from the Malaysians to mark their 10th victory after 13 head-to-head encounters against the Indian pair and Wooi Yik described the semi-final clash against the Indian duo as a high-quality match. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Reigning Asian men's doubles champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik came from a game down to defeat India's Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and enter the Singapore Open final. The world No 3 Malaysian pair won 19-21, 21-10, 21-18 in 63 minutes to overcome the gritty Indian duo, who were previously ranked No 1 but dropped to No 27 after skipping multiple tournaments due to injuries. Tonight's win keeps alive Aaron-Wooi Yik's hopes of clinching a third title this year after achieving their ninth victory over the Indian pair in 12 encounters so far. In the final tomorrow, the two-time Olympic bronze medallists will meet the world No 10 South Korean pair of Seo Seung Jae-Kim Won Ho who saw off Denmark's Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in the other semi-final match. Aaron-Wooi Yik have met the South Korean pair only once, at the India Open in January where the Malaysians lost in the semi-final. Tomorrow's match will be the Malaysian pair's third consecutive final in the World Tour series. Aaron-Wooi Yik will be hoping to create a personal record of winning three tournaments in a year, after capturing the Badminton Asia Championship title in April and Thailand Open crown two weeks ago. At the Malaysian Masters last week, the duo lost in the final to compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun.
