Third time's a charm: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik reign supreme in Singapore
The Malaysians came back from a set down to beat fifth seeds Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae of South Korea 15-21, 21-18, 21-19 in a 65-minute thriller at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, their third title this year following their victories at the Badminton Asia Championships in April and the Thailand Open in May.
'Their condition was very good. After the first set, I knew we needed to increase our speed. So we just pushed very hard for every point,' Wooi Yik told reporters as he credited coach Herry Iman Pierngadi for playing a major role in their recent performances, especially in refining their attacking gameplay.
'Coach really plays a very big role. He is the one with the idea of how to complete our gameplay, which was previously inconsistent. But it's still a long journey, we still have a big mission this year, so I feel this is just the start for us, he said.
Aaron meanwhile said that their coach has been instrumental in motivating them, both in matches and training sessions.
'He's only been with us for three months, so we're still learning from him. I think we still need time, but overall, we've improved. He gives us a lot of confidence during training. He doesn't put a lot of pressure on us. He also reminds us to be happy every day,' he said.
The duo said their next focus would be the Indonesia Open, scheduled for June 3 to 8 at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, where they are slated to take on Denmark's Rasmus Kjaer and Frederik Sogaard, whom they defeated in the opening round in Singapore.
The last time Malaysia won in Singapore was in 2018, through mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie, while the last Malaysian men's doubles to win was Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari in 2008. — Bernama

Pulau Pangkor Emerge As Largest Contributor To Anchovy landings In Perak Last Year
IPOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Pulau Pangkor has emerged as the largest contributor to anchovy landings in Perak with a record of 2,844.44 tonnes worth RM42.67 million in 2024. The Department of Fisheries (DOF) Malaysia said the achievement underscores the significant role of Pulau Pangkor in the country's fisheries industry, especially the anchovy fishing sector. "Nationally, the anchovy landings in Malaysia in 2024 totalled 14,589.20 tonnes valued at RM164.89 million, referring to the same species, Ikan Bilis/Bunga Air, as categorised in official records. "Among the main producing states are Sabah (5,956.17 tonnes), Perak (2,852.91 tonnes), Kedah (1,818.98 tonnes) and Kelantan (992.65 tonnes)," the statement said. The statement also stated that the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, had earlier conducted a working visit to the anchovy industry area on Pulau Pangkor earlier today. According to the DOF statement, Pulau Pangkor currently has 694 vessels registered in various operational zones, namely Zone A (462 vessels), Zone B (44 vessels), Zone C (168 vessels) and Zone C2 (20 vessels) which allows the landing of various fish species, including anchovies. The statement further said that apart from anchovies, statistics also showed that among the top 10 species landed in Manjung Selatan in 2024 were pelaring, tongkol (skipjack tuna), tamban sisek, selayang, kembong (Indian mackerel), cincaru, selar, white shrimp and squid, with a total landing value of RM644.08 million. 'Pulau Pangkor also contributes to Perak's aquaculture sector with a production of 7,056.40 tonnes in 2024 through brackish water pond farming systems, cages, shellfish farming, freshwater ponds, hatcheries and freshwater ornamental fish farming across an area of over 1,264 hectares,' the statement said. Pulau Pangkor also remains an important location in the national fisheries industry with its strategic advantage as a centre for high-quality anchovy production which is a benchmark for the industry.

RM2,000 bonus for each team member if S'gor win most golds at Sukma
Selangor will host the next Sukma in August 2026. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Selangor government has decided to give a RM2,000 incentive to each of its athletes if the state wins the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) by gaining the most gold medals. Menteri besar Amirudin Shari said this would be on top of the incentives that each athlete would get if they win gold, Bernama reported. Athletes in individual sports who win a gold medal will receive a RM10,000 incentive. Those in team events with fewer than three athletes will receive RM5,000 each, while those in sports with more than three teammates will be awarded RM3,000 each, if they win the gold medal. 'However, this amount can still go up. We have a year from now (till the next Sukma),' Amirudin was quoted as saying after officiating at the state government's Road To Sukma 2026 Champion programme. Seri Serdang assemblyman Abbas Azmi was appointed the head of the Selangor contingent. The last Sukma in 2024 was held in Sarawak, with the host state winning the competition with 62 gold, 45 silver and 52 bronze medals. Selangor athletes to get RM2,000 extra if state wins Sukma 2026 overall title, says MB
SHAH ALAM, Aug 16 — The Selangor state government has agreed to increase the winning incentive amount for its athletes at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) by RM2,000 if the state wins the overall championship. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said this additional amount will be based on the incentives given last year to athletes who won gold medals at the biennial event. He said this would bring the total incentive to RM12,000 for individual athletes, RM7,000 per person for athletes in team events with fewer than three players, and RM5,000 for sports with more than three players. 'However, this amount can still go up. We have a year from now. I will follow up and we will get an analysis from the coaches, the State Sports Council, and so on. 'If there's a significant increase as we head towards SUKMA, God willing, we will raise the incentives from time to time,' he said at the launch of the Road To Champion Sukma 2026 and the Appointment of the SUKMA Adopt-a-Programme here today. Last year, Amirudin announced that the Selangor government would offer a winning incentive of RM10,000 to individual athletes who won a gold medal at the 21st SUKMA Games in Sarawak. He said that for team events with five or fewer players, gold medal contributors would receive an incentive of RM5,000 each, while for team events with more than five players, they would receive RM3,000 each. The ceremony today also saw the appointment of Seri Serdang State Assemblyman (ADUN) Abbas Salimi Che Adzmi@Azmi as the Contingent Head, while the Deputy State Secretary of Selangor (Development), Datuk Johary Anuar, was appointed as the Deputy Contingent Head. In the last SUKMA edition, Selangor finished in third place with a medal haul of 56 gold, 64 silver, and 61 bronze behind host state Sarawak who emerged as the overall champion with 76-55-70, followed by the Federal Territory as the runner-up with 75-65-72. — Bernama
