Ballon d'Or 2025 nominees: Man Utd reject Scott McTominay named as PSG stars dominate
The Scotland midfielder is nominated among the top 30 players in Europe after leading Napoli to the Serie A title as his former club finished 15th in the Premier League Scott McTominay is a contender to win the men's Ballon D'Or less than a year after getting offloaded by Manchester United for only £25m. And five Lionesses have also been nominated for the women's award. The Scotland midfielder is among 30 stars on the shortlist after leading Napoli to the title and winning the Serie A Player of the Year. Ousmane Dembele is the favourite to win the award on September 22. But the France striker is one of nine Paris-Saint Germain players nominated and the votes for the Champions League winners will be split. Barcelona's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal is the second favourite ahead of PSG midfielder Vitinha. There will be a new winner with last season's winner Rodri not included after rupturing his ACL ligament last September. Premier League champions Liverpool are represented by three players - Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Virgil van Dijk. England stars Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Cole Palmer and Declan Rice are also nominated. United academy graduate McTominay, 28, is the first Scot to be shortlisted since Ally McCoist back in 1987 after scoring 12 times from midfield in his first season in Italy. His former club United scored 44 goals in 38 Premier League games as they finished 15th under Ruben Amorin. The Portuguese coach was appointed in November after McTominay's sale under the Erik ten Hag regime. Former Scotland striker Kris Boyd told 'I think Scott McTominay would be perfect for what Ruben Amorim wants from his players at Manchester United. He wants players with legs who can get up and down the pitch. That's definitely what he's got, and he's got a good size physique as well. 2025 Men's Ballon d'Or Nominees Jude Bellingham - Real Madrid Ousmane Dembele - PSG Gianluigi Donnarumma - PSG Desire Doue - PSG Denzel Dumfries - Inter Serhou Guirassy - Borussia Dortmund Viktor Gyokeres - Arsenal Erling Haaland - Manchester City Achraf Hakimi - PSG Harry Kane - Bayern Munich Khvicha Kvaratskhelia - PSG Robert Lewandowski - Barcelona Alexis Mac Allister - Liverpool Lautaro Martinez - Inter Kylian Mbappe - Real Madrid Scott McTominay - Napoli Nuno Mendes - PSG Joao Neves - PSG Michael Olise - Bayern Munich Cole Palmer - Chelsea Pedri - Barcelona Raphinha - Barcelona Declan Rice - Arsenal Fabian Ruiz - PSG Mohamed Salah - Liverpool Virgil van Dijk - Liverpool Vinicius Jr. - Real Madrid Vitinha - PSG Florian Wirtz - Liverpool Lamine Yamal - Barcelona 'United produced him so he had that in his DNA, and Amorim must wish he had never left. He ticks the boxes of what Amorim has been signing and wants at United.' Meanwhile, five of England's European Championship-winning squad have been nominated for this year's Women's Ballon d'Or. Captain Leah Williamson is joined by Lionesses team-mates Lucy Bronze, Chloe Kelly, Alessia Russo and Hannah Hampton after they clinched back-to-back European titles with victory over Spain in Basel last month. Williamson, Kelly and Russo are also among the seven Arsenal listed while Hampton is also nominated for the Yachine Trophy, given to the best women's goalkeeper. Euro 2025 Young Player of the Tournament Michelle Agyemang is listed for the Women's Kopa Trophy - awarded to the best under-21 female footballer - while Myles Lewis-Skelly is among the nominees for the men's Kopa Trophy along with Yamal. Reds boss Arne Slot and Chelsea's Enzo Maresca have been nominated for the men's Johan Cruyff Trophy, along with PSG's Luis Enrique. England boss Sarina Wiegman is nominated for the women's coaching award along with Chelsea 's Sonia Bompastor and Renee Slegers of Arsenal. Bompastor oversaw Chelsea completing a domestic treble in her inaugural season at the helm, while Arsenal boss Slegers – who took charge of the team in October last year – lifted the Champions League trophy.

Napoli's Scott McTominay Set To Be Nominated For 2025 Ballon d'Or: Report
Last Updated: Scott McTominay is set for his first Ballon d'Or nomination after a stellar season with Napoli, contributing to their Serie A title win. Napoli's midfield dynamo Scott McTominay is reportedly set to receive his first-ever Ballon d'Or nomination, following a sensational 2024/25 campaign in Italy. According to Daily Mail and SportBible, if confirmed, McTominay will join a prestigious group of players vying for football's most coveted individual prize—a remarkable turnaround for a player whose move from Manchester United to Napoli last summer raised eyebrows across Europe. At 28, McTominay made a bold leap by leaving his boyhood club, Manchester United, to sign a four-year contract with Napoli. What followed was nothing short of transformative. Under the guidance of manager Antonio Conte, McTominay flourished, contributing 13 goals and six assists in 39 appearances across all competitions. More significantly, his performances played a pivotal role in Napoli's historic Serie A title triumph—just the fourth in the club's long history. For his efforts, McTominay was named Serie A Player of the Year, quickly becoming a cult figure among fans in Campania. Speaking to talkSPORT last month, McTominay was full of praise for the Napoli faithful: 'The supporters here are special. The passion they bring every week—home or away—is something I've never experienced before." While McTominay's nomination has not been officially confirmed by France Football, the outlet responsible for organizing the Ballon d'Or, the 30-man shortlist is expected to be released in September ahead of the October ceremony in Paris. The shortlist is compiled by France Football's editorial team, former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba, and a guest journalist. After the shortlist is finalized, votes are cast by international journalists from the top 100 FIFA-ranked nations, as well as national team coaches and captains. Who's Favoured? Ousmane Dembélé is currently the bookmakers' favourite after his instrumental role in PSG's Champions League triumph. Rising superstar Lamine Yamal is another strong contender following a breakout year at Barcelona, where he helped lead the Catalan giants to the La Liga title and a Champions League semi-final. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
