Eddie Murphy isn't convinced 'Norbit' is his worst movie: 'Come on now, s--- ain't that bad'
The actor defended the critically panned 2007 comedy, citing "Holy Man" and "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" as much worse. Think Norbit is Eddie Murphy's worst movie? Uh, the actor would like to remind you about the existence of The Adventures of Pluto Nash and Holy Man. Murphy pushed back at the assertion that his critically panned 2007 comedy Norbit is one of his worst films, in a new interview with Complex's Speedy Morman. In fact, the comedian insisted the flick still makes him laugh to this day. 'I love Norbit," Murphy said of the comedy he co-wrote with his brother, Charlie Murphy. "Norbit came out right after I got that Oscar nomination. There were articles like, 'How can he get an Oscar, he did this?' They're two different movies." (Murphy received his first Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in 2007's Dreamgirls.) "I wrote Norbit with my brother, Charlie, and we think Norbit is funny," Murphy continued. "It came out and they gave me a Razzie Awards for worst actress, worst actor, and worst actor of the decade. And I was like, 'Come on now, s--- ain't that bad.' They was just hatin' on me." "To this day, I like Norbit," Murphy said. "There's stuff in Norbit that makes me laugh." When asked to name his worst films, Murphy, without hesitation, cited 1998's Holy Man and 2002's Pluto Nash. Murphy starred as the eponymous character in Norbit, about a man scheming to get out of his marriage to a shrewish woman (a role he also played, among several more) in order to rekindle a romance with his childhood sweetheart played by Thandiwe Newton. Norbit picked up nine nominations at the 2008 Razzie Awards, a parody award show honoring the worst in cinema, including Worst Picture. Murphy "won" the award for Worst Actor of the Decade, among a few other "accolades." He took a break from acting following the awards show, revealing in a podcast that the decision stemmed from the realization that he had been "making s---ty movies."Murphy returned with such titles as Mr. Church, the acclaimed Dolemite Is My Name, the Coming to America sequel, and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. His latest project is the comedy heist The Pickup (streaming now on Prime Video), in which he stars opposite Pete Davidson as two truck drivers ambushed by ruthless criminals. "There's this generation gap between the characters," Murphy told Entertainment Weekly of making the flick with his fellow Saturday Night Live alum. "What makes it pop when we get together and what makes us have chemistry is that we're totally opposites." Watch more from Murphy's conversation with Complex above. ‘I love Norbit': Eddie Murphy ranks his movies and defends Razzie-winning film
The Hollywood legend declares his love for the film 'Norbit' while listing 'Coming to America' and 'The Nutty Professor' as some of his best movies. Eddie Murphy doesn't care what critics have to say about his projects. In a recent interview with Speedy Morman, the actor reflected on his decades-long career and his projects. When asked to list his best films, the 'Boomerang' star joked that it would be easier to list his worst movies, which prompted a conversation about his highly criticized 2007 film 'Norbit.' 'I love Norbit,' he told Morman. 'Norbit came out right after I got the Oscar nomination. So, there were articles [that were] like, 'How can he get an Oscar? He did this.' They're two different movies.' 'I wrote it with my brother Charlie. We think 'Norbit' is funny. They gave me a Razzie for worst actor, worst actress, and worst actor of the decade for that … Come on, that s**t ain't that bad. To this day, I like it. Stuff in 'Norbit' makes me laugh,' he continued. Of his extensive catalogue of work, the actor believes that 'The Adventures of Pluto Nash' and 'Holy Man' are his worst films. On the contrary, Murphy thinks some of his best projects are 'Coming to America,' 'Shrek,' '48 Hours,' 'Dreamgirls,' and 'The Nutty Professor,' which he says best represent him as an actor. 'The Nutty Professor, has a bunch of stuff in it. All these different characters, and they have to play different stuff. You know, there's some serious kind of sweet heartfelt stuff in it…it's stuff that's just completely insane in it,' he concluded. 'And if I had to take one movie to represent my whole [career] it would be The Nutty Professor, I think.' Murphy, who previously won theGrio's 'Icon Award,' reflected on almost 50 years in the entertainment industry and how the landscape has changed. 'I have been in this business for 47 years,' Murphy said as previously reported by theGrio. 'It was a whole different show business back then. The only young people you would see were the Jackson 5, 'Good Times,' and 'Sanford and Son,' which were the only Black people you would see on TV. Sidney Poitier was the only one in the movies. We had no Black makeup artists, producers, writers and directors. We have all of that now.' Latto Says Her ‘Body Count' Lyrics Aren't ‘That Deep': Just ‘Don't Let Everybody Put Their Hand in That Cookie Jar, Period'
Latto doesn't think fans should take her lyrics about body count that seriously. The Atlanta rapper recently made an appearance on Complex's 360 With Speedy Morman, where she was asked about the debate she spurred online about how many sexual partners a woman has, between her past lyrics and an appearance on TheTylilShow Live. More from Billboard Latto Says She's 'Big Daddy' While Rocking Carmelo Anthony's Syracuse Jersey Thom Yorke Releases 'Dialing In' as Theme to Apple TV+ Series 'Smoke' Kneecap Removed From Scottish Festival Following Safety Concerns From Police 'Be a boss. Don't let everybody put their hand in that cookie jar, period,' she said in reference to having too many sexual partners. 'It's literally not that deep. I'm pushing, like, 'Be a boss. Don't let everybody have access to you.'' She then added that her view on body count also applies to men. 'I think men should be like that too. Y'all just be slangin' that mother—-er around.' Speedy then asked why she felt proud about having a low body count, after she claimed that she never said having multiple partners were a bad thing. 'It's not necessarily like a number that I'm proud of,' Latto responded. 'It's more so, everybody ain't touched this, everybody ain't had their hands on this mother—-er, you feel me?' The 'body count' drama started when Latto and her younger sister Brooklyn were making a social video to promote her single 'Somebody' and Latto asked Tylil if he cared how many partners his girlfriend has had. 'Do you care how many bodies your girl got?' she asked before the popular streamer replied with, 'Nah, hell no, that don't got nothing to do with me' and asked why she always mentions body count in her raps and if she thinks fans believe her. 'I don't give a f— if they believe me; my n—a believe me,' she fired back. Latto has mentioned body count on songs like 'Sunday Service' and 'Somebody,' where she raps, respectively, 'Anyway, body count so low, I might say I'm a virgin' and 'I don't care about your bodies.' Elsewhere in the conversation, Latto was asked about her net worth reportedly being $5 million, and while she claimed that specific number is off, she also said having money isn't as fun as some might think. 'It's kinda boring,' she said after being asked what it feels like to be able to buy whatever she wants. 'For me? I was a millionaire at 21, so you grow up fast already being in the industry at a young age, and then you get a lot of money at a young age too. I think I get the most fun spoiling everybody around me now. I spend more money on other people than I do myself. I be so stingy with my money for myself.' You can watch the full interview below.
