Two, including a minor, arrested for murdering contractor in Arsikere

A civil contractor was found murdered at a construction site in front of the KSRTC depot in Arsikere town on Friday night. Vijay Kumar, 46, was allegedly murdered by two people, including a minor, both native of Bihar. Vijay Kumar had taken up the construction of a hotel building at a site belonging to K.V. Srinivasa Reddy, a hotelier in Arsikere. Two of his workers used to stay at the construction site. According to the police, Vijay Kumar received a phone call around 11 p.m. on Friday from the workers. Before reaching there, he had informed the site owner Srinivas Reddy that he was on his way to the site as he learnt that his workers had a scuffle. Srinivas Reddy later got suspicious about the development and checked the CCTV footage of the activities at the site on his cellphone. He saw the workers leaving the place on the bike belonged to the contractor. He rushed to the spot and found the contractor, Vijay Kumar, dead. Srinivas Reddy informed the Arsikere Police, who then visited the spot and registered the case. During the investigation, it was found that Bikram Kumar, 25, and a minor boy allegedly murdered Vijay Kumar and took away gold ornaments he was wearing. They had also cut one of his fingers to take out a ring. They were arrested in Bengaluru. They had reached the city by train and were looking for another train to flee to their native place. Time to demystify the engineering education?

Hyderabad: Is it time for the State government to move away from the outdated and redundant policies that heavily favor engineering education and to demystify the perception surrounding it? For the past three decades, the policies of successive governments in the Telugu States have excessively favored engineering education at the expense of basic sciences and other fields of study. This obsession with engineering has not only disadvantaged other disciplines, but the realm of engineering education has also become plagued by capitation fees, similar to issues seen with land and other mafias. Speaking to The Hans India, a former faculty member of an engineering college in Ranga Reddy stated, 'It is an open secret that many private, unaided engineering colleges and other professional colleges have been violating every known regulation imposed by the state and regulatory bodies.' Currently, management quotas for seats in AI, Data Sciences, Robotics, and Machine Learning branches, along with Computer Science Engineering, are being sold for fees ranging from Rs six to 15 lakh. 'This is preying on the emotions of parents who want their children to have a bright future by studying premium branches of study,' says Srinivas Reddy, an assistant professor at an engineering college in Medchal. Moreover, the fee structure for several new subject areas introduced in the top 25 to 30 institutions in and around Hyderabad goes beyond Rs 15 to 20 lakh, largely because these institutions have higher placement records. 'Yet, many institutions do not pay salaries properly to their faculty. Some colleges that collect huge donations do not return the original certificates of students, claiming that the state government has not cleared the fee reimbursement,' he added. The manipulations of private unaided colleges include collecting donations, faking college ratings, and obtaining grades through fraudulent data, which has turned engineering education into a donation mafia. When asked, Professor N Sridhar (name changed) from an 'A' rated autonomous engineering college in Ranga Reddy pointed out, 'We cannot blame only the colleges for all the ills. The state government and universities must establish interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary pathways that connect different fields and encourage a broad spectrum of study areas.' For instance, it is not necessary that a non-engineering student cannot study Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI-ML) or Data Sciences. The experimentation taking place at central universities, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and other central universities showcases how the intersectionality among science, engineering, management, social sciences, and humanities has become increasingly vibrant and highly sought after by various industries. Once the compartmentalized approach is dismantled, it will have a significant impact on demystifying engineering education, allowing non-engineering and non-IT students to enter emerging job markets in areas like AI, ML, and related fields.

Re-survey in 413 villages with Nizam-era land records: Minister Ponguleti

To find a permanent solution to land-related issues in the State, the government has decided to re-survey 413 villages that have outdated Nizam-era nakshas (land maps). A pilot project will be launched in five villages of these 413 using modern technology, including drone surveys and geo-referencing, said Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy. In a statement here on Sunday, he added that the pilot villages selected for the project are Salar Nagar of Gandeed mandal in Mahabubnagar district, Kommanapalli (new) of Beerpur mandal in Jagtial district, Mulugumada of Yerrupalem mandal in Khammam district, Nuguru of Venkatapuram mandal in Mulugu district, and Shahid Nagar of Vatpally mandal in Sangareddy district. The re-survey aims to bring clarity to land ownership, resolve disputes and provide transparency in land records. The government plans to expand the project to the remaining villages based on the results of the pilot project. Minister Srinivas Reddy criticised the BRS government for not addressing the issue in these villages where the records were not updated since the Nizam era despite being in power for 10 years. He assured that the present government is committed to resolving land issues using modern technology. The re-survey will involve preparing geo-referenced cadastral maps and rights registration documents. The government has selected experienced companies to conduct the survey, which is expected to benefit farmers and landowners. He said that the government had chosen survey agencies — RV Associates, Marvel Geo Spatial, IIC Technologies, Neo Geo and Drogo Drone — for this re-survey project. He added that the survey would be taken up in the remaining village after completing it in these five villages.

The CBI had named eight persons, as well as the OMC, as accused in the case. Lingareddy, A-5 in the case, died during the trial. Senior IAS officer Y Srilakshmi, who was arrested and released later, was discharged in the case by the High Court in November 2022. The CBI arrested Janardhan Reddy and Srinivas Reddy on September 5, 2011 for illegal mining and export of iron ore from Ballari in Karnataka and Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh.
