Scotland star set to link up with World Cup and Champions League winner as new team-mate

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LAST season he linked up with an old friend and Scotland team-mate for a short period at his club over in the MLS. Ryan Gauld welcomed his close pal Stuart Armstrong to Vancouver Whitecaps when his fellow Scot and ex-Dundee United colleague jetted over to Canada on a free transfer. 2 Ryan Gauld is set to have another big name as one of his team-mates Credit: Kenny Ramsay 2 Stuart Armstrong joined him in the MLS last season Credit: Getty But in the coming days an even bigger name is expected to link up with the Scotland international across the pond. According to reports in North America, Gauld is going to be joined by one of the biggest names in world football in Vancouver. Soon he'll be able to say he shares the pitch with a World Cup AND Champions League winner. And it's a surprise move for the veteran 35-year-old as he's only ever played for one club throughout his entire career. That's where he lifted as many as THIRTEEN league titles and TWO Champions Leagues and Club World Cups. He even became a world champion with his country 11 years ago back in 2014. Have you guessed who it is? Gauld is set to link up with Bayern Munich and Germany legend Thomas Muller. The legendary playmaker has won every trophy available to him in his homeland and is Bayern Munich's all-time record appearance holder with 756 games under his belt. But his incredible journey in Munich came to an end this summer as he's said goodbye to his boyhood club after 25 years. Thomas Muller has Bayern Munich fans howling with risque funeral joke in retirement speech on pitch His contract expired at the end of last season and he wasn't offered a new deal to extend his stay. He's not ready to hang up his boots just yet, though, as he's keen to continue with a fresh start in the MLS. And according to MLS insiders Ben Jacobs and Tom Bogert, Vancouver are now "finalising" a deal to bring the icon to Canada. The club have reportedly agreed in principal to acquire the "discovery rights" for Muller from FC Cincinnati as they had first refusal on the player. Cincinnati made an offer to sign him earlier this summer but could only offer him a deal worth around £1.5million per year as they had already filled their designated player spots. Muller didn't entertain that offer and Vancouver have since stepped in to win the race. Cincinnati will be owed around £300,000 from Vancouver should the deal go through. A source said: 'Stuart has had a glittering career that has seen him spend years in the top flight of English football. 'But he has maintained links to his homeland, despite a move that has seen him play elsewhere for the last seven years. He appears to have invested his earnings very wisely.' Accounts show Armstrong bought a flat in Aberdeen's West End for £126,000 in 2018. The same year he paid £415,00 for a place in Edinburgh's Newington area. Unemployed Celtic hero eyed for shock return to club just TWO MONTHS after they released him

Stuart Armstrong is currently without a club and has been weighing up his next move since leaving Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 1 Stuart Armstrong playing for Sheffield Wednesday last season Credit: Alamy The Celtic hero, 33, was one of seven players to be released by the Owls after they finished the season in 12th place in the English Championship. He only joined the club on a short-term deal in January following a stint in the MLS with Vancouver Whitecaps. Wednesday have been left in a predicament this summer as they can only sign free agents after they failed to pay wages on time. The transfer embargo prohibits the club from signing any players for a fee until January 2027. That leaves boss Danny Rohl having to rely on his current crop of stars and experienced free agents for the next 18 months. But many of his current players could leave in the coming weeks, with Rangers closing in on a deal for star winger Djeidi Gassama. The Light Blues have also reportedly expressed interest in re-signing former striker Josh Windass. And in the meantime Rohl is looking to get his team in the best shape possible with moves for players they ARE allowed to sign. SunSport understands Armstrong is one them after he featured 11 times in the Championship last season, providing one assist. Wrexham have enquired about the 33-year-old as well but have yet to make a move. It's understood the Owls may step in with an offer in the coming days but he will likely be offered less cash that what he was on last season.
