I wanted to be a singer, comedy just happened: Sudesh Lehri

New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI) Sudesh Lehri, best known for shows like 'The Great Indian Laughter Challenge 3" and 'Comedy Circus", says he initially wanted to make a mark as a singer but people appreciated his comic skills more. Almost two decades later, Lehri is now a well-established name in the world of television comedy and has even worked in films like 'Ready" with Salman Khan and 'Loveyaapa" and 'Dreamgirl 2". 'I didn't choose comedy, it just happened. I wanted to be a singer. I used to sing songs on stage but people would like me more in comedy. I would often mimick the singer whose song I was singing and people used to like that. I would also copy people and I realised that comedy was fun because you get the response instantly," Lehri told PTI in an interview. The comedian said it was not easy to transition from Punjab to Mumbai. 'I'm not educated… Going from Punjabi to Hindi was a challenge, but while acting, it just kept happening (learning). I've been in Mumbai for at least 18 years… I'm having a lot of fun," he said. The actor, who was last seeen in 'Laughter Chefs 2", is now part of JioHotstar show 'Pati Patni Aur Panga" with wife Mamta Lehri. The show also features other celebrity couples like Hina Khan-Rocky Jaiswal, Rubina Dilaik-Abhinav Shukla, Debina Bonnerjee-Gurmeet Choudhary, Avika Gor-Milind Chandwani, Swara Bhaskar-Fahad Ahmad and Geeta Phogat-Pawan Kumar. 'When we shot it, it was fun. We are having a lot of fun. We're getting money, and it's easy," Lehri said about the show. Sudesh Lehri Says He Is 'Illiterate', Had No Money Growing Up: 'Used To Work For Pennies'

However, even when he didn't have much money, he still believed in spending it and enjoying life. Actor and comedian Sudesh Lehri grew up poor and didn't have enough money to go to school. In a chat with Aman Aujla, Sudesh recalled not having enough money to receive an education. Sudesh called himself illiterate and said he couldn't even read signboards. However, even when he didnt have much money, he still believed in spending it and enjoying life. 'I was 17 when I got married. My wife was 15. We had no idea what we were doing. When we had kids, we didn't know what to do. There was no money. Everything was makeshift. We couldn't afford hospital fees either," he said. Sudesh added, 'I'm uneducated. I'm illiterate. I never went to school, not even nursery or kindergarten. I've never been inside a school. We didn't have the money. I used to work for pennies at shops. I worked as a mechanic. I couldn't even read signboards. But I knew I wanted to become an actor. I couldn't read, but I could memorise lines." He recalled, 'I believe in spending money. Money is of no use if it's lying in your account. I remember when I was a kid in Amritsar, we didn't have money to buy firecrackers or sweets on Diwali. I asked how much we have, and they said we had Rs 100. I thought that was a lot, because you're not going to eat 2 kgs of sweets by yourself, are you? I bought sweets for Rs 50, and then a couple of candles. We had the best Diwali. I took everyone to our roof, and told them to imagine that our neighbours were our servants. They were lighting firecrackers at our command, because we didn't want to get our hands dirty. I told them to use their imagination." 'I believe in spending money. My first car was a second-hand Indigo, and I had so much fun with it. Then, there was a time when I had five houses in Mumbai," he said. Sudesh also mentioned that his son asks him to buy designer clothes. 'I don't even understand the appeal, but he likes it, and eventually he's the one who ends up wearing my Gucci shoes," Sudesh said. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
