Guntur railway division to get Kavach
GUNTUR: In a major step to improve railway safety, Indian Railways is set to implement the advanced 'Kavach' automatic train protection system across the Guntur Railway Division. Indigenously developed and approved by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Kavach is designed to prevent collisions by automatically applying brakes in cases of signal overshoots or when two trains are on a collision course. The system serves as a digital safety shield, particularly crucial in case of low visibility or driver error. 'If a train fails to stop at a red signal or is at risk of a head-on collision, the system overrides manual controls and halts the train,' Guntur Divisional Railway Manager Sudeshna Sen told TNIE.

Guntur Division observes World Environment Day and International Level Crossing Awareness Day with vigour
Guntur Railway Division marked two significant events on Thursday — World Environment Day and International Level Crossing Awareness Day — with a range of awareness campaigns and public engagement activities, underlining its commitment to sustainability and safety. To commemorate World Environment Day, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Sudeshna Sen led officers and staff in a pledge to adopt eco-friendly habits and actively reduce plastic usage. A vibrant rally and a street play (Nukkad Natak) was held on the platforms and in the concourse of Guntur Railway Station, highlighting the harmful effects of plastic pollution and encouraging sustainable practices. In a parallel effort to enhance green cover, a tree plantation drive was conducted at the Nallapadu freight depot. DRM Sudeshna Sen, Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM), and several branch officers participated in the initiative, planting saplings and encouraging similar efforts across the division. Simultaneously, the division observed International Level Crossing Awareness Day by launching intensive safety campaigns at key manned level crossings. With increasing incidents at level crossings, officials from the Railways, Railway Protection Force (RPF), and Road Transport authorities conducted awareness drives to educate pedestrians and motorists on safe crossing practices. The safety awareness campaigns were held at Level Crossing No. 3 between Guntur and Reddipalem (Inner Ring Road gate), Level Crossing No. 6 between Nallapadu and Bandarupalle (near Peddapalakaluru village), and Level Crossing No. 312 between Guntur and Nallapadu. Commuters were advised on crucial precautions such as obeying signals, understanding warning systems, and ensuring safe passage only after checking for clear exits.

Flash mob at Guntur Railway Station against use of plastic
The students on Saturday organised a flash mob at the Guntur Railway Station to raise awareness on the harmful effects of plastic, as part of the ongoing World Environment Campaign from May 22 to June 5. Around 50 children danced to the eco-awareness song Tik Tik Plastic, appealing public to reduce plastic use, especially single-use items, and to switch to eco-friendly alternatives like cloth bags. The young participants included children from railway families and the local community. Guntur Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Sudeshna Sen said the children had earlier taken a pledge to stop using plastic and to encourage others around them to do the same. As part of the campaign, DRM Sen and railway staff handed out jute bags to passengers, promoting the message of sustainability. 'Carry your own water bottle. Say no to single-use plastic. And stop using plastic,' the DRM said. She noted that such efforts, even if small, can lead to meaningful change. The involvement of children, she added, shows that the younger generation is ready to take the lead in protecting the environment.
