Not Goa, Sunburn Festival to have its 2025 edition in Mumbai; here's why
Sunburn Festival, hailed as Asia's largest electronic dance music (EDM) event, will move its flagship edition from Goa to Mumbai this year. While the venue is yet to be announced, the three-day festival is scheduled to take place on December 19, 20 and 21 in Mumbai. This marks the first time that the festival will be held outside of Goa since its launch in 2007. As per the official press note, the shift from Goa to Mumbai follows a fan survey conducted by the organisers, which 'found that one in two respondents were keen to explore the flagship festival outside of Goa, with a clear preference for Mumbai.' Sunburn's 2025 edition will be held under the theme 'Ascend: Beyond the Real', which the organisers describe as an immersive format with upgraded production, stage design and infrastructure. 'This next step reflects Sunburn's evolution from a destination-dependent festival to something more profound: a state of mind that can thrive wherever its community gathers,' read the press note. 'Nearly two decades ago, we set out with a simple yet powerful vision — to create a world-class electronic dance music experience in India,' said Karan Singh, CEO of Sunburn. 'What followed was the beginning of a movement, with Sunburn becoming one of the first to put India on the global entertainment map. Goa has been an integral part of that story, but building a legacy also means taking it forward. Bringing Sunburn to Mumbai feels like the right step, creating new energy and connections in a city that never stands still.' Mumbai has previously hosted Sunburn arena events, including performances by Avicii in 2011 and Martin Garrix in 2018. The move is also supported by the Government of Maharashtra as part of its wider push to promote music tourism in the state. 'Maharashtra has always been at the forefront of shaping India's cultural and entertainment economy, and music is a vital part of that vision,' said Atul Patne, Principal Secretary of Tourism, Government of Maharashtra. 'By bringing landmark experiences like the Sunburn Festival to Mumbai, we are actively building a robust music tourism ecosystem, one that attracts global attention, fuels local enterprise and positions our state as a thriving destination for next-generation cultural experiences.' Over the years, Sunburn has featured international headliners including Martin Garrix, DJ Snake, Tiësto and Swedish House Mafia, among others. Earlier this year, it also ranked at eighth position on DJ Mag's prestigious 'Top 100 Festivals of 2025' list. How and where to book tickets for Sunburn 2025: For the 2025 edition, tickets sales will open in two phases – an exclusive pre-sale for RuPay credit card holders will go live on August 12 at 12 PM, while general ticket sales will begin on August 14, also at 12 PM, through BookMyShow.
