Build it and they will come: The making of a Supercross track

The 2025 Monster Energy Supercross season is comprised of 17 rounds and like snowflakes, no two tracks have been alike. The same pieces are there week to week, but the way they are assembled differs for each track. Riders experience rhythm sections, bowl turns, flat corners, table tops, steep jumps over a tunnel, and whoops, with occasional other surprises track builders want to toss in their path. But one thing remains the same: the men who build the tracks and the fact that from the top of the highest jump to the base of the floor, a Supercross track is all dirt. Supercross tracks are constructed by DirtWurx, a New York company that has been doing the heavy lifting since the 1990s. Track design is a collaborative event between builder and promoter. Recently, when Supercross visited Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Acrisure Stadium, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, set up a time-lapse camera to record the building of a track in the market for the first time in more than 40 years. It was a unique view of the workings that go into transforming a football stadium into a dirt track. The track build began with 14 trailer loads of plywood, about 7,500 sheets making two layers of protection for the stadium floor. Then dirt is trucked in. For Pittsburgh, it took 500 truckloads, or 5,500 cubic yards. When Supercross returns to a market, they use dirt been stored offsite since the previous season. With Pittsburgh, that option was not fully available, but Feld Entertainment has run Monster Jam races in the market, so some of the dirt was recycled. To supplement that dirt, they turned to a local contractor with a stockpile used in landscaping and construction. Before a jump is built, the track is covered with six inches of dirt to provide a base. Fabric is placed under the dirt, above the plywood, to further protect the floor from the watering that needs to take place to maintain the jumps structural integrity. 'The guys in the loaders know how many buckets of dirt each jump is and they will place it [in the appropriate place], then we have a guy it and goes through and shapes it and packs it in,' Kenny Henry, Director of Operations Track Construction for DirtWurx. 'Then we have a guy in a skid steer who comes through and cleans everything up.' The track is built from the outside in, generally piling up mounds that will be refined. In bowl turns that require netting, the posts are added after the turn is completed by cutting out a channel in back of the berm, sinking the metal tubes, and then covering them back with enough dirt to keep them from moving. Notably, Pittsburgh's dirt is not particularly rocky despite the mountains that surround it. Should there be more rocks in the dirt than is optimal, it will be sifted between seasons. 'We can, or we will [sift the dirt] if we get to a pile that is rockier or has more debris than we would like,' Henry continued. 'During the summertime, or off-season, we will go through it, but this dirt is pretty clean.' Dan Beaver, And that is a luxury Supercross has that is not available to Pro Motocross tracks. Last year, NBC Sports caught up with Greg Robinson, co-owner of Unadilla, MX Park to discuss the challenges of the rain that pelted the course, and during the course of the conversation, talk turned to the rockiness of the surrounding area. Outdoor tracks are also forced to sift their dirt, but it is an endless process. 'The outdoor tracks have an endless supply of dirt, so the rocks bubble to the surface, where here we have a stockpile of dirt that's above ground,' Henry said. Levi Kitchen suffers broken collarbone, back fractures at Daytona Supercross

Levi Kitchen ran third on Lap 4 of Round 8 of the 2025 Monster Energy Supercross season when he crashed violently in the frontstretch rhythm section. He was evaluated at the infield care center of Daytona International Speedway and transported to a local hospital. On Sunday, he updated fans on his condition. Kitchen suffered a broken collarbone and fractures in his back. 'What's up everybody,' Kitchen posted on social media from his hospital bed. 'Thanks for all the texts and everything. I'm in the hospital in Daytona, obviously. Doing a little better now. 'I'm sore but broke (my right collarbone) and have a couple of fractures in my upper back. So, yeah, it was unfortunate. I felt like I kind of maybe found a new level of riding last night. There are some positives to take away, but I got a little bit greedy with that section. I'm just glad it wasn't worse. I haven't seen the crash — don't really want to, because it's probably pretty gnarly right there, but thank you, everybody. I'll be alright.' Neither Kitchen nor the team has provided an update on when he is expected to return to action. Earning only one point with his 21st-place Daytona finish, Kitchen fell to seventh in the points standings. Ken Roczen moved determinedly from fourth to the lead in the first half of Round 8 of the 2025 Monster Energy Supercross season and then held off a challenge by Cooper Webb to become the sixth winner of the year at Daytona Beach, Florida, and tie the record for the most wins during a season. Roczen was as surprised as the fans. The win was special because everyone wants to win a race at the famed Daytona International Speedway, but Roczen said during the post-race news conference that all his wins are special now that they are coming with less frequency. Roczen had a solid start to his season with four second-place finishes and a third in the first seven rounds, but one thing was missing: He finally was the 'W'. Webb was one of the favorites coming into Daytona because of the four second-place finishes and six podiums he's scored in seven attempts. Webb is accustomed to being the one applying pressure, but the possibility of finally winning this race forced him into making several mistakes that could not be overcome. Finishing three positions ahead of his principal rival, Chase Sexton, padded his points lead, so Webb was content. Aaron Plessinger would like to think he has put the early season behind him now that he has his first podium of the year. Plessinger led Daytona from Laps 4 through 7 but got pushed back as far at fourth while his teammate Sexton and Webb battled their way to the front. He kept contact with the top three and moved into that position on Lap 14. This was not only his first podium but the first top-five of 2025. Known in 2025 for his starts, Justin Cooper did not get out of the Daytona gate quickly. He completed Lap 1 in ninth and methodically worked his way into the top five by Lap 8 of 16. He crashed late in Arlington as he attempted a sketchy pass on a lapped rider. Daytona was worse. Sexton crashed hard during his heat race and failed to finish with minor injuries and a damaged bike. He won the Last Chance Qualifier and had one of the worst gate picks for the feature. Sexton completed Lap 1 in eight, caught Webb midway through the race and was in third by Lap 10. The effects of his crash started to take a toll soon after and he faded to fifth in the final rundown. Sexton now has a 10-point deficit to Webb as the series hits the halfway point. We have been following Kevin Moranz for the past two weeks, and he made that worthwhile by qualifying directly into the feature with a seventh-place finish in his heat. Moranz finished 21st but earned points for the fifth time in eight rounds. He stands 25th in the standings. Jordon Smith had just retaken the lead in Feature 1 of the Arlington, Texas Triple Crown format Monster Energy 250 West race when he crashed violently in the whoops. Smith led laps 6 and 7, lost it for a little while and led laps 11 and 12 when the accident occurred. Haiden Deegan inherited the lead as the Alpinestars Medical crew evaluated Smith. He was carted off the track during podium interviews, waved to the crowd, and was transported to a local hospital for x-rays. Here's what took Jordon Smith out of the lead 🫣 #SupercrossLIVE #SMX 'After a hospital evaluation, (Smith) was diagnosed with a punctured lung. Thankfully, no other injuries were sustained, and he will do everything in his power to return for the East / West Showdown in Indianapolis,' Factory Triumph reported on social media. On Sunday night, Smith provided a further update on X: :What a bummer. Can be doing everything right and still things happen in this sport that you just don't know why. I'm beat up but I'll be back! I'm currently still in the hospital. I have four broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a small laceration in my spleen. They're monitoring me for a little longer and should be headed home in the morning. Thanks for all the support from the fans and from my family and team. We will come back stronger.
