Buchi Babu cricket: Tamil Nadu look to find a spin partner for Sai Kishore

M Siddharth CHENNAI: The Buchi Babu invitational tournament, which traditionally acts as a preparatory event for the Ranji Trophy, could not have come at a better time for Tamil Nadu . Different factors – including workload management and injuries to key players – have put TN outside their comfort zone ahead of the red-ball competition that will begin here on Monday. The tourney will serve as a testing ground for TN, who will seek answers to some probing questions via their two teams – TNCA President's XI and TNCA XI. Among those is the quest to find an able ally for lead spinner R Sai Kishore in the first phase of the Ranji Trophy. Sai Kishore's partner-in-crime S Ajith Ram, a left-arm slow bowler who has been a mainstay in the TN XI for the last few years, is set to be out of action until at least December, after suffering an ACL injury during the Tamil Nadu Premier League. While left-arm tweaker M Siddharth (TNCA XI) is likely to be the front-runner to replace Ajith Ram, he will have to demonstrate during Buchi Babu that he is cut above the rest. DT Chandrasekar (TNCA XI), P Vidyuth (TNCA President's XI) and P Vignesh (TNCA President's XI) are the other left-arm spinners in the fray, with Lakshay Jain (TNCA XI) and J Hemchudeshan (TNCA President's XI) being the off-spinning options. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Next-Level Tablet Experience Awaits with Blackview MEGA 8 BlackView Shop Now Undo Given that Sai Kishore has been ruled out with a minor finger injury, the TNCA President's XI slow bowlers may receive the opportunity to take up the lead role. TN head coach M Senthilnathan said that it is up to the players to make a strong case for themselves. 'We have enough spin-bowling talent to encounter this situation. The Buchi Babu tournament gives them a platform to showcase their skills. Some of these players are not well established at TN's senior level, so the tournament will allow us to pick the right players for the Ranji Trophy,' Senthilnathan told TOI on Sunday. Chandrasekar was the topper of the TNCA first division league's wickets chart in the opening phase, while Vidyuth and Hemchudeshan were also placed in the top-15. 'We have many left-arm spinners in TN and they have shown that they are capable of picking up wickets,' added Senthilnathan. Meanwhile, U-19 stars RS Ambrish (TNCA President's XI), K Abhinav (TNCA President's XI) and D Deepesh (TNCA XI) will get a taste of senior-level cricket.
