Indian Navy signs contract with BEL for NMDA project
Visakhapatnam: With an aim to strengthen maritime and coastal security, the Indian Navy signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru for the implementation of National Maritime Domain Awareness (NMDA) project. The contract was signed in the presence of Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, and Manoj Jain, chairman and managing director of BEL. Entailing upgradation of the existing National Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence (NC3I) Network to NMDA Network along with incorporation of AI-enabled software, the project will bring in an integrated approach to data collation, analysis and information sharing among various maritime stakeholders. As part of the project, the existing Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) at Gurugram, nodal centre of NC3I Network, will also be upgraded into a multi-agency The project will be executed on a 'turnkey basis' and will be administered by the Indian Navy.

The Indian Navy on Tuesday announced that it has signed a contract with Navratna defence public sector undertaking Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru, for the implementation of the National Maritime Domain Awareness (NMDA) project, aimed at enhancing maritime and coastal security. The deal involves upgrading the existing National Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence (NC3I) Network to the NMDA Network, with the integration of artificial intelligence-enabled software. The agreement was signed in the presence of Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, and Manoj Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of BEL. As part of the project, the Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) in Gurugram — currently the nodal centre of the NC3I Network — will be transformed into a multi-agency NMDA centre, with representatives from various national agencies. 'The project will be executed on a turnkey basis and will be administered by the Indian Navy,' the statement added. Last month, BEL received orders worth over ₹3,000 crore, including two contracts valued at ₹2,323 crore from two major Indian shipbuilders — Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai, and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Kolkata. These deals include the supply of base and depot spares for missile systems installed aboard Indian naval ships. According to BEL, these components are vital for maintaining the operational readiness of key onboard systems. Shares of BEL closed at ₹422.05 on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

India and Africa to launch joint naval drills
The Indian Navy, in collaboration with ten African nations, will launch the inaugural Africa India Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME), a multilateral naval exercise aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation and security in the Indian Ocean Region, Tarun Sobti, India's deputy chief of Naval Staff, told reporters in New Delhi on Monday. AIKEYME ('unity' in Sanskrit) will be co-hosted by the Indian Navy and the Tanzania People's Defense Force in April 2025 in Dar-es-Salam, Tanzania. Participating countries include Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, and Tanzania. The drills will be conducted in two phases. The port phase will include command and staff exercises focused on counter-piracy operations, information sharing, and training in seamanship and vessel boarding. The maritime phase will focus on navigation skills, search and rescue operations, handling small arms, and helicopter exercise coordination. The vessel will have a combined crew from India and nine foreign countries, including Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. The deployment is planned to last over a month, commencing in April. In October 2022, India held its first-ever trilateral naval exercise with Tanzania and Mozambique, focusing on asymmetric threats, boat and helicopter operations, casualty evacuation drills, firefighting, and visit board search and seizure drills. Last June, the Russian guided missile cruiser Varyag and the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov visited the Egyptian port of Alexandria. Russian and Egyptian military forces carried out joint exercises. The drills focused on joint maneuvering techniques, testing communication systems, and enhancing technical cooperation.
