'Together and united': AFL world reacts amid new revelation in Wayne Carey saga

Luke Hodge has declared "the club's bigger than anyone" after it was revealed on Tuesday night that Wayne Carey and Anthony Stevens will both be part of North Melbourne's centenary celebrations later this year. The Kangaroos will celebrate their 100 years of existence in the Round 17 game against the Western Bulldogs. And journalist Caroline Wilson revealed on Channel 7 program 'The Agenda Setters' that Carey and Stevens will put their differences aside to both be present. Carey was infamously caught having an affair with Stevens' wife Kelli in 2002, and left North Melbourne in disgrace despite being the club captain. The former best mates haven't repaired their relationship in the 23 years that have followed, and had a verbal altercation in 2022 at a private celebration to mark the 25-year anniversary of their 1996 premiership. Stevens was then absent when the players were paraded on the filed the next day. The Kangaroos released a video late last year to celebrate 100 years in the VFL/AFL, and it controversially left Carey out. But Wilson has now revealed that Carey will be welcome in Round 17, where he, Stevens and fellow former teammate Glenn Archer will form a "united front". Wilson said: 'All three men are well aware that they will be there together and united for the first time. There was speculation last year when North unveiled their centenary jumper. And if you remember, there were North champions from through the eras and there was no Wayne Carey (in the video) and Corey McKernan was very upset about this. 'They had a 25-year premiership reunion for the '96 flag, and there was an altercation at a pub between Anthony Stevens and Wayne Carey. We know the history there. They had to be separated. I don't think it was physical, but it was not nice. 'And when there was a motorcade the next day at Marvel Stadium, Anthony Stevens wasn't there and Wayne Carey was. So the club has worked really hard to get all these guys within the fold. And clearly you can't celebrate your 100th anniversary without Wayne Carey being there.' RELATED: James Hird's family revelation amid awkward moment on live TV AFL world gutted over news about West Coast premiership hero Former Hawthorn captain Hodge agreed it wouldn't be right if Carey wasn't there. 'This is just as much about the supporters who grew up watching the captain of their football team," he said. 'He captained two premierships and for him not to be at the 100-year celebration. I think a lot of supporters would walk away upset about that, because he was such a big part of them throughout the 90s. 'He was the face of the AFL. Some have touted him as the best player that they've ever seen play the game. All clubs have disagreements, but the club's bigger than anyone, and that's me, the celebration is about the players and it's about the supporters." Hodge's comments are particularly telling considering he recently expressed his sadness that Cyril Rioli stayed away from Hawthorn's centenary celebrations. Hodge and Rioli caught up last weekend at the Gold Coast and Hawthorn game in Darwin, which Hodge said was the first time since 2018 that he'd been able to speak to his former premiership teammate. Wilson said it's been "a slow and steady overture" to get Carey back involved with North Melbourne. "He would say he was never banned from the club, but at times, probably didn't feel all that welcome,' Wilson added. Carey took to social media on Wednesday to deny he wasn't welcome at times, stating he'd been to "at least 10" big functions at the club since his retirement. The majority of fans were also happy to hear he'd be part of the centenary celebrations. See you there duck 🏆🦘 — Shinboner (@page_gma) May 21, 2025 Guys a legend of the club. Best player to ever pull on the blue and white. Deserves to be there agree with caro on this one. — Aussie Warrior (@bigunk420) May 20, 2025

'Just so sad': AFL world saddened over revelation about Hawks hero Cyril Rioli

AFL fans and commentators are expressing their sadness after Cyril Rioli stayed away from Hawthorn's centenary celebrations at the MCG on Sunday. Four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson returned to the fold as the Hawks marked their AFL/VFL centenary in style with a 65-point thrashing of Richmond. Clarkson was among a host of former players and club legends who were part of a pre-match ceremony featuring all 13 premiership cups the club has won. Wearing a Hawthorn scarf despite being the current head coach of North Melbourne, Clarkson returned to the club for the first time since a bitter falling out when he left in 2021. Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis, Robert DiPierdomenico and Dermott Brereton were among the many former players who took part, but a notable absentee was Rioli. The 2015 Norm Smith medallist and four-time premiership winner was in Melbourne over the weekend, but chose not to be part of the celebrations. Rioli is one of Hawthorn's favourite sons, but is now estranged from the club due to allegations of racism experienced by him and his partner. In November last year, Hawthorn settled a federal court case with past First Nations players and their families, and issued an apology. Rioli was among a group of players who alleged they were racially vilified during their time at the club. Hawthorn said in a statement: "No person should suffer to pursue a career in football. This has provided valuable learnings for the Club and has greatly assisted the Club in improving its processes, education and the care it provides to each First Nations player and their support persons." The case was settled without a determination of any of the parties' allegations. Rioli was the lead applicant alongside his wife Shannyn Ah Sam-Rioli, former players Carl Peterson and Jermaine Miller-Lewis, his partner Montanah-Rae Lewis, and former Hawthorn Indigenous liaison officer Leon Egan. Some of the allegations were levelled against Clarkson, although an investigation by AFL officials uncovered no adverse findings. He has continually denied any wrongdoing. Discussing his return and Rioli's absence on Channel 7 on Monday night, leading journalist Caroline Wilson provided new details. Wilson said Indigenous leader Aunty Joy was present at the celebrations, which served as a key step in the healing process. 'It was an unbelievable celebration, and people there at the function called it a line in the sand moment,' Wilson said on 'The Agenda Setters' program. 'Aunty Joy was there, she spoke - strong Indigenous leader, Aunty Joy. 'But there was sadness, for me, that there were some who weren't there. And I don't want to be a party pooper, but it's just so sad that one of the all-time greats, Norm Smith Medal winner, four-time premiership player, Cyril Rioli, didn't go. He was in Melbourne and he didn't go.' Fellow panellist Craig Hutchison said: 'You can understand his healing and his view on that. I think it would have been a bridge too far for him to go, in the situation that they've been in, this soon. He was in Melbourne supporting his family which is great, but yeah, too hard for him to attend on the day.' RELATED: GWS Giants under fire after pre-game swipe at Swans backfires Nick Daicos detail sparks eye-opening theory from AFL great On Sunday, Hawks coach Sam Mitchell - who took the reins from Clarkson in a messy handover in 2021 - admitted it was daunting to have his former mentor and so many greats around the club. "He's a four-time premiership coach of the club and hasn't been around for a while, so it's great that he was able to go out and spend some time with the guys that he coached from Hawthorn," Mitchell said. "Then on the other side he's coaching an opposition team, so there's always going to be some complexities around that side of things."

Damning footage emerges after Essendon make complaint over illegal Collingwood act

Essendon coach Brad Scott has explained why he sought clarity from AFL House about whether Collingwood were flouting the 'stand' rule in their Anzac clash. Speaking on Channel 7 program 'The Agenda Setters' on Tuesday night, Scott confirmed reports that the Bombers had asked for some clarification this week. Channel 7 highlighted a number of instances in which Collingwood players encroached on the 'protected zone' after an Essendon player had taken a mark last Friday. The rule involves umpires telling players on the mark to 'stand' in place and not move, otherwise a 50m penalty can be called. If defenders move within five metres of the player who took the mark, they're not allowed to then retreat out of the protected zone and get back into a better defending position. It's all designed to speed up the pace of play and promote more attacking footy. On Tuesday night, Scott revealed that AFL officials admitted to him that a number of calls regarding the rule last weekend were wrong. There seems to have been a relaxation of the rule in recent times after it was first introduced in 2023. "It just seems there's been a bit of 'creep' on the 'stand' (rule) and the protected area," Scott said. "I understand it's a really hard rule to umpire, but do you have to stand or can you just block the 45 (angle)?" Panellist Dale Thomas said the examples shown from the Collingwood game should have been pinged by the umpires. Scott added: "They (AFL House) come back and said they're all errors. There will obviously be an adjustment to that, but that doesn't help us now." RELATED: Buddy Franklin exposes troubling issue hurting Swans Jack Ginnivan hit with charge from AFL over ugly incident The Bombers coach said he wasn't complaining about Collingwood, but wanted the rule clarified now before it rears its head in the finals. "We sent the vision in and said 'if this is the way it's interpreted, we'll do the same thing'," he said. "So we just want some clarity. "I'm not interested in going back in retrospect and saying 'you got this wrong'. It's about what's going to affect us going forward. "I think the 'stand' and protected area are material to the way the game's played. Steve Hocking (former Executive General Manager of Football at the AFL) and others went to enormous lengths to open up the game offensively. Because defence was starting to win for a long time. Offence is starting to win now, but it seems as though it's creeping back a little bit." The AFL said in 2023: 'An opposition player cannot run toward the mark (and enter the protected area) and then elect to change their mind and retreat outside of the protected 5m area. Similarly, an opposition player cannot elect to leave the protected area and then change their intent and choose to come and stand the mark. Further all other players from the opposing team must be positioned behind the mark or otherwise outside the protected area.' The game is in absolute crisis with its rules & adjudication through its umpires. Melbourne set to hire Victorian business chief Paul Guerra as new CEO to replace Gary Pert

Melbourne are set to hire Victorian business chief Paul Guerra as their new CEO, six months Gary Pert announced his resignation. According to The Agenda Setters' Caroline Wilson, Guerra will cross to the Demons from the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a major Victorian business advocacy organisation, where he is its current chief executive. Breaking the story on 7NEWS, Wilson said the Melbourne board was still meeting to make the final call. 'The Melbourne board is still meeting as we speak, but my prediction is that an outsider in the role, Paul Guerra, the CEO of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, is the frontrunner in the board meeting,' she said. 'Alistair Nicholson presented very well, the former Melbourne player who now runs the Coaches' Association, but my tip is that Paul Guerra will win the role, an Essendon man who will change his colours.' Guerra is set to win the role ahead of a pair of names more well-known to footy circles. 'The AFL and other people in the footy industry were quite keen on Keith Thomas, the former Port Adelaide CEO and Norwood player, who did a great job at the Port Adelaide Football Club — he stepped down from that role in 2020,' Wilson added. 'My understand is that, controversially, some positions, political positions, involving war in the middle-east that appeared on Keith Thomas's social media meant that he had to withdraw from the candidacy. 'I think it's a great pity because many people thought he would be a great candidate, but Melbourne were spooked, and so he's no longer in the running.' Stream full episodes of The Agenda setters live, free and on-demand at 7plus It's been a long time coming for the Demons, who have been led by interim CEO David Chippindall since Pert's departure in January. Pert's decision, which was made in October, also came less than two months after Kate Roffey stood down as president, the pair departing just three years after leading the club to the 2021 premiership. Speaking at the time, interim president Brad Green — who remains in the temporary seat now — said it he felt 'mixed emotions' that Pert would retire. 'After careful consideration of what is best for the club, his family, and his own future, Gary concluded that now is the right time to initiate the search for his successor,' Green said in a club statement last October. 'I want to make it absolutely clear that this decision, including its timing, is Gary's own.' Pert, an ex-Collingwood CEO, had positioned himself as the only man to deliver Melbourne's Caulfield development and has accepted a consulting role for the remainder of the project. His resignation as chief executive came after a review into the club's operations was handed to the board. Pert was also involved in trade negotiations at the end of last season, reportedly contacting other clubs to gauge their interest in Clayton Oliver before the star midfielder ultimately stayed.

'Not good enough': Isaac Heeney savaged by AFL great over 'unforgivable' act

AFL great Luke Hodge has put Isaac Heeney on notice, pinpointing a number of questionable efforts in the Swans' loss to Hawthorn last week. Sydney kicked off their 2025 season with a 20-point loss to the Hawks, beginning the Dean Cox era on a sour note. Dissecting the game on Channel 7 program 'The Agenda Setters' on Tuesday night, Hawthorn great Hodge wasn't impressed by what he saw from Heeney. Hodge pinpointed two goals the Hawks scored that came about from Heeney lapses, and described his actions as "unforgivable" at one stage. "He's on watch, because his job is to make sure nothing comes through the stoppage," Hodge said. "But also, as the ball goes out, he's got to watch out for any player." Hodge showed vision of Heeney seeing that Lloyd Meek was free in the forward line but failing to mark up on him, which allowed Meek to take a mark and convert the goal. "This is unforgivable right here," Hodge said. "He sees Meek is by himself and thinks 'he's not my man and I'm not going to worry about him'. You're a leader of the football club. He didn't man him up and Meek kicked one of his two goals. That's not good enough." Hodge then showed a second incident in which Heeney ignored teammate Justin McInerney telling him to push onto the other side of a ball-up and mark a free Hawks player. "McInerney is telling his leader to push through because (Conor) Nash is sitting here by himself," Hodge said. "Because he doesn't do intensity...(James) Rowbottom and (Chad) Warner get sucked into the contest because Heeney didn't come across. It left two of Hawthorn's best ball-users at the back of the contest. They kicked it forward and scored a goal. Two of their three goals from outside the centre square came from a Heeney set-up." "Two of their three goals from outside the centre square from stoppage, [came] due to a Heeney set-up (error)." Confirmed: Hodgey has been watching tape 👉 — 7AFL (@7AFL) March 11, 2025 Heeney wasn't the only high-profile player to be criticised for their play on Tuesday night, with James Hird and Rory Sloane calling out Collingwood skipper Darcy Moore. Vision was shown on 'Footy Classified' on Channel 9 of the moment GWS counterpart Toby Greene ran back bravely into a marking contest and managed to avoid being hit with any force. Hird and Sloane both said they were gobsmacked Moore didn't take the opportunity to put a shot on Greene, which could have been done legally as he contested the ball. Eddie McGuire highlighted footage of Greene being very physical with Collingwood players and questioned why Moore didn't give him a taste of his own medicine. McGuire pointed out that Moore was involved in the incident with Christian Petracca last year that saw the Demons star suffer horrific rib and lung injuries. He asked Hird: "That would have been in the back of his mind and he's a scrupulously-fair player, but in this situation (with Greene) what would you have been advising him to do?" Hird responded: "I have huge respect for Darcy Moore but if it was Toby Greene in that situation, Darcy Moore would have been carried off on a stretcher. He would have gone straight through him. I'm not saying you try to hurt anybody, but I imagine if Toby Greene was in the same situation it would have been a different story." RELATED: Victorian AFL team revealed as 'best placed' to get Harley Reid Jamarra Ugle-Hagan in shock link to Collingwood amid troubles Retired Crows champion Sloane said Greene would be "lights out" and "going to hospital" if he was in Moore's situation. "It was courageous from Greene and you expect that from your captain, but on the other side I'm going 'there's a freight train coming and he's lights out here. He's going to hospital." McGuire added: "In the context of that game, Collingwood needed to do something. Darcy did the right thing and punched the ball away did it nicely." "GWS went there with intent to be 'violent', and Collingwood didn't stand up to that."Hirdy and Eddie highlight how the difference in Toby Greene and Darcy Moore's approach summed up the Giants-Pies clash.#9FootyClassified | Watch on Nine & 9Now 📺 — Footy on Nine (@FootyonNine) March 11, 2025
